‘Russian actors’ may attempt to split society – German intelligence


Germany’s domestic security agency has warned that protesters may end up advancing Moscow's agenda

Germans protesting over issues such as surging energy prices may be exploited by extremists, conspiracy theorists, and activists seeking to delegitimize the government, Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, the BfV, has warned. The protesters may even be unwittingly doing Russia’s bidding, the agency claimed.

The chilling warning issued last week said that “legitimate protests [in Germany] are being hijacked by enemies of democracy for their own purposes.”

“So far there have been no signs of widespread anti-state protests or violent mass riots,” looming, the head of the BfV, Thomas Haldenwang, acknowledged. Nevertheless, the agency is on the lookout for red flags.

“We are closely monitoring whether the agitation on the internet is reflected in a mobilization for activities relevant to the protection of the constitution in the real world,” he said.

The agency claimed that “right-wing extremists” were trying to attribute “the economic effects of the Russian war of aggression” in Ukraine to “alleged incompetence of the democratic parties.”

Such individuals have linked the surging energy prices in Europe with globalization, the statement said.

Energy prices in Germany spiked after the EU sought to punish Russia for its operation in Ukraine by decoupling European economies from Russian commodities, including hydrocarbons. Meanwhile, other nations, such as China and India, have ramped up their imports of Russian coal, crude oil and natural gas, some of which is reportedly being re-sold to Western nations at a premium.

German “extremists” who see a connection between the globalized world and European economic troubles aim to “exploit” the growing discontent of ordinary citizens “to undermine trust in the state, government and democracy in the long term,” the BfV said.

The public resentment is being fueled by Russia, the agency claimed, accusing “Russian actors” of using “targeted dissemination of false information” about pressing issues such as energy costs or possible food shortages.

The BfV didn’t offer any examples of such activities in the statement, but Haldenwang assured that Russia was determined “to divide the society in Germany.”

Meanwhile, in “the left-wing extremist scene” the security agency noticed a growth of anti-military sentiment and criticism of defense contractors.

Zelensky Says Russia's Mass Trial Of Captured Mariupol Fighters Will Make Peace Talks "Impossible"

It's obvious at this point that Ukraine's military is seeking to expand strikes inside Russian-controlled Crimea, which this month has become an unprecedented first following a brutal, grinding more than half-year of war. Zelensky has called for its "liberation" - but if this weren't enough to ensure that the conflict will continue to burn for at least the near to medium-term future (the war is possibly set to endure for years, according to the predictions of some US defense officials), Zelensky's latest remarks on Monday suggest that any potential ceasefire negotiations aren't even so much as anywhere on the horizon.

Zelensky called the idea of negotiations with Moscow "impossible" if Russia moves forward with plans for a mass trial of captured Mariupol defenders. "If this despicable show trial takes place, if our people are brought into this scenery in violation of all agreements, all international rules, if there is abuse … this will be the line beyond which any negotiations are impossible," Zelensky said Monday.

"Russia will cut itself off from the negotiations," he stressed. "There will be no more conversations. Our state has said everything." Russia too has of late been expressing a similar position of being closed to talks, blaming Kiev and its Western backers, and President Putin is expected to dig in his heals further especially after the recent Crimea attacks as well as the car-bombing of Alexander Dugin's daughter Darya on Saturday night.

In the comments he confirmed he is in ongoing conversation with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, French President Emmanuel Macron and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan over what Ukraine is dismissing as a show trial, saying that he expects the UN to issue clear condemnation.

"Everyone understands everything," Zelensky said. "They understand what the occupiers are doing and what it threatens," he added of international powers. "And they understand that Ukraine will not tolerate this. It will not tolerate tormenting of people about whom only one thing can be said: they are heroes of their homeland, they defended the freedom of their people from invaders on their land."

Russian foreign ministry officials have meanwhile complained separately that it's the UN itself largely to blame for lack of any diplomatic process towards a negotiated settlement to the war:

Gennady Gatilov, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, told the Financial Times that the UN should be playing a bigger role in attempts to end the conflict and accused the US and other Nato countries of pressing Ukraine to walk away from negotiations.

There would be no direct talks between Putin and Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he said. "Now, I do not see any possibility for diplomatic contacts," Gatilov said. "And the more the conflict goes on, the more difficult it will be to have a diplomatic solution."

As for the hundreds of Ukrainian fighters who spent literally months holed up in the cavernous Azovstal steal plant while under siege by numerically superior Russian forces, Kremlin authorities have said they mostly make up the neo-Nazi Azov battalion. Earlier Russian media reports additionally alleged that some foreign fighters may have been in their midst as well.

Already, some foreign fighters, including UK nationals, were in months past sentenced to death by a local pro-Russian Donetsk court. It's entirely possible and even likely that the captured Azov members will be issued the same sentence. Without doubt, Moscow will seek to "send a message" with this trial. Russian forces have accused Azov battalion of being genocidal and of committing 'terrorism' against civilians.

The trial is also sure to capture global headlines and likely elicit UN condemnation, also given that - as The Hill reports - "Ukraine’s military intelligence arm warned on Friday in a Telegram post that Russia has been remodeling the Mariupol Chamber Philharmonic and installing iron cages in the building for a trial on Wednesday, which marks Ukraine’s independence day and six months since the war began."

Russia to present proofs of Ukrainian shelling of Zaporizhzhia NPP at UN Security Council meeting

The continuous Ukrainian attacks on the plant may lead to a worldwide disaster

On August 23, at Russia's request, the UN Security Council will hold an urgent meeting on the situation around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (NPP). According to Russian official Vladimir Rogov, the regional authorities have collected all materials proving the shelling of the plant by the Ukrainian forces.

According to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the risk of nuclear conflict has become the most serious in decades. He noted that dialogue must prevail in the situation with the Zaporizhzhia NPP. The organization, according to Guterres, may organize an IAEA (the International Atomic Energy Agency) visit to the plant via Kyiv.

Last week, the Russian ambassador to the US visited the US State Department and discussed the situation, according to the American diplomatic office. On August 22, the station was again shelled by Ukrainian militants with American weapons killing a civilian that was passing by at the time. The person died from shrapnel wounds.

The plant and Energodar, a nearby city, are regularly shelled by the Ukrainian military which could eventually lead to disaster. The authorities in the Zaporizhzhia region have already developed an evacuation plan in case of an accident at the nuclear power plant. The Ukrainian Armed Forces could strike both the Kakhovskaya hydro power plant (HPP), which operates a cooling system, and the nuclear fuel storage facility.

Is the U.S. giving Ukraine some weapons secretly?

Rumors are swirling around Washington that the United States has provided Ukraine with more weapons than the administration has announced publicly.

On Friday, a senior Pentagon official said the U.S. had been quietly supplying the Ukrainians with High-speed Anti-Radiation missiles — used for targeting radar systems — for some time. “[W]hen we first announced the initial provision of HARM missiles, the way that we characterized it in the announcement was not specific. We described that we were providing a counter-radar capability,” the official said.

Two days later, Yahoo! News published a story that argued the recent attacks on Russian targets in Crimea weren’t the result of special operations teams carrying explosives, as Ukraine suggests. Instead, the blasts were the result of long-range missile strikes, former U.S. special operators told MICHAEL WEISS and JAMES RUSHTON. But Ukraine doesn’t have any missiles with the range to strike Saki air base in Crimea, they noted — at least not with the missiles America and its partners publicly say they transferred.

One possibility, per Weiss and Rushton, is that the U.S. has secretly sent the Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, to Ukraine. If true — and it’s not clear that it is — that would go against what the administration has said publicly. In July, national security adviser JAKE SULLIVAN told the Aspen Security Forum that sending those missiles would further provoke Russia and potentially instigate World War III.

Okay, so maybe NatSec Daily was overthinking things. But then today, two people familiar with the move said the U.S. included Excalibur precision-guided munitions in the Aug. 19 weapons package, even though the administration didn’t publicly announce them. Furthermore, a document sent by the administration Friday to lawmakers, and seen by NatSec Daily, lists what was in the latest $775 million package, noting that what goes to Ukraine isn’t “limited” to what’s featured in the notification.

We admit this is all speculation. No member of the administration confirmed or even hinted that there were secret shipments of weapons to Ukraine. Even if there were, there’s little to no chance they’d share a classified decision with us.

But if there's anything to the secret-weapons theory, some experts would be supportive of the more-quiet approach. “It’s gratifying that the administration appears to be talking less and doing more in terms of the weapons transfers. That’s good because it gives the Russians a little bit of uncertainty about what we’re doing,” said the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ TOM KARAKO.

The whispers about the U.S. giving Ukraine more than it lets on are only growing, not dying out. We’ll stay on it to see if it’s part of the D.C. rumor mill or there really is something to it.

After the info on the troop movements and so on he gets into a possible new law that might come into effect in Russia I believe tomorrow, it has to be voted on first though. It would make Ukraine a terrorist State, apparently this bill or law was files end of July. Just listen to his explanation of that law.
