Quote Las Vegas high school student collapses, dies during flag football game

    JANUARY 6, 2023 / 6:08 PM / AP

A Las Vegas high school student-athlete died Thursday after suffering a "medical emergency" and collapsing during a varsity flag football game Thursday at her school, authorities said Friday.

The Clark County coroner identified the girl as Ashari Hughes, 16, and reported that a determination of her cause and manner of death was pending.

Desert Oasis High School Principal Ian Salzman said in an email that the student suffered a "medical emergency" and campus staff members immediately provided medical aid after Hughes collapsed, until paramedics arrived during the school's home game against Valley High School, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

"It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that the student passed away," Salzman wrote, according to the Review-Journal.

Clark County School District Superintendent Jesus Jara said in a statement that the district grieved with Hughes' family, friends and loved ones.

"The loss of this young life deeply saddens us," Jara said. "When a tragedy occurs, it affects not only that school but the entire Clark County School District family."

The death in Las Vegas came amid heightened attention to the health of athletes after a professional football player, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, went into cardiac arrest and was resuscitated on the field during an NFL game Monday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hamlin was recovering in a Cincinnati hospital, where his agent reported Friday that Hamlin was breathing on his own and able to speak after having a breathing tube removed.

Quote Beloved young coach at Devine Middle School passes away after collapsing in class

Jacob Sanchez made an everlasting impact on his students and loved ones

AN ANTONIO – His playful, easygoing personality made him an easy pick to be a student’s favorite coach.

But 35-year-old Jacob Sanchez was also an inspiration, a leader and an innovator that made him so likable to those he worked with at Devine Middle School.

On Thursday, Sanchez collapsed at the start of class and staff members conducted CPR.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office reports he died of a heart attack. On Friday, the Devine community gathered for a vigil before the start of school and school counselors were available to help students cope.

Principal Kandi Darnell was with him just minutes before he collapsed. “He seemed fine and everything seemed fine,” she said.

Darnell has known Sanchez since he was a student himself and said he really shined as a teacher. “He was a kid’s teacher, I’ll put it that way. He took time out to connect with the kids,” she said.

Sanchez’s wife Rebecca Powe issued this statement: “My honey was the light of our lives. He kept our family on our toes, constantly going, and always laughing. We shared a beautiful life together He loved us with his whole heart and loved his life. He was dedicated to the community of Devine and the kids were his motivation every day.”

Old Dominion men's basketball player collapses during game vs Georgia Southern

Imo Essien was able to sit with team for the rest of game

An Old Dominion University men’s basketball player suffered a terrifying ordeal on Saturday as the team took on Georgia Southern.

The incident occurred with about 13:13 left in the first half. Old Dominion sophomore guard Imo Essien was on the defensive side of the ball when he fell onto his backside on the court. He struggled to get back to his feet and started to lay down on his back appearing to be in pain.

Medical personnel for Old Dominion rushed over to attend to Essien. He didn’t appear to lose consciousness and was helped to his feet and walked off the court with the trainers.

"Imo Essien was evaluated by the ODU Athletic Training staff along with the GA Southern medical staff," the school stated. "He was responsive throughout and was able to sit with the team for the duration of the game and drove home with the team."

Quote 'Mad Dog' Marcio Freire dies in surfing accident in Nazaré, Portugal

LISBON — Veteran Brazilian surfer Marcio Freire died on Thursday while practicing tow-in surfing on the giant waves in Nazaré on the central coast of Portugal, the local maritime authority said.

Support staff on jet skis managed to get the 47-year-old to the beach, but all attempts to revive him failed.

Freire was one of the three Brazilian surfers who became known as the “Mad Dogs” after conquering the giant wave “Jaws” in Hawaii. They were featured in the 2016 documentary Mad Dogs.

Tributes from other surfers poured in on Instagram.

“He surfed all day with a big smile on his face. That’s how I’ll keep him in my memory. Legend,” posted fellow big wave surfer Nic von Rupp.

    Pulmonary contusion.... hmm

    Quote Published January 8, 2023

Los Angeles Rams Russ Yeast second NFL player this week hospitalized for scary chest injury

The events of the Week 17 “Monday Night Football” game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals made national headlines. Second-year player Damar Hamlin suffered a serious blow to his chest while making a tackle on Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. The hit is believed to have caused Commotio Cordis and sent the defensive back into cardiac arrest.

Few will be able to forget the image of the field at Paycor Stadium being filled with players and an ambulance entering it to take Hamlin to the hospital after needing to be resuscitated. Fortunately for him, after being in intensive care for several days, his health has remarkably improved and he is likely to return to a normal life after the near-death incident.

Also Read: Damar Hamlin’s condition – Bills player now breathing on his own, talking to teammates

The situation was highly emotional for Bills players and many athletes and officials around the NFL, so it made the injury to rookie Russ Yeast on Sunday scarier than it probably needed to be because of its similarities to Hamlin’s.

During the Los Angles Rams’ overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks this weekend, Russ Yeast — who was filling in for safety Nick Scott — was knocked out of the game with what was called a chest injury. While he was listed as questionable to return, he never did.

Following the game, The Athletic Rams beat writer Jourdan Rodrigue was one of several individuals that reported Yeast never came back on the field because he required a trip to the hospital after suffering a pulmonary contusion. The 23-year-old who was drafted in the seventh round in April is reportedly in stable condition and expected to stay overnight in the hospital for observation.

A pulmonary contusion is essentially a bruise on the lung. However, after what happened to Hamlin, any chest injury that requires a visit to the hospital for a football player is sure to set off some alarms for worry. However, the Los Angeles Rams player should be just fine in a few days

Quote Teen who collapsed during basketball game expected to make full recovery

    Jan 09, 2023, 5:31pmUpdated 9h ago

John Maro, 15, was playing for Basking Ridge's St. James School. The game was held at Auten Road Intermediate School in Hillsborough Saturday evening.

Coach John Travers says the game had just started and Maro has already scored four points when he collapsed.

Maro’s father and other parents ran onto the court and started performing CPR. Coach Travers called 911. A defibrillator was used to shock Maro’s heart, and he was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

On Monday, the teen was reported to be doing well.

“Johnny was sitting up in the hospital bed. He was actually able to sit on the side of the bed this morning. And was talking with his parents,” Travers says. “It just put the biggest smile on my face. He’s a very good friend of my son. They play on two basketball teams.”

Family members tell News 12 that the eighth grader was born with pulmonary valve stenosis – which is a narrowing of a heart valve that can restrict blood flow.

Maro had a valve transplant two years ago and doctors cleared him to play basketball. Maro’s father says that this medical issue had nothing to do with his son’s collapse on the court.

The parents say this is concerning because they now need to figure out what happened.

Quote 18-year-old collapses and dies during basketball game

    Bahamas January 05, 2023

    #Tribune Staff Reporter

AN 18-YEAR-OLD girl collapsed and died at a basketball court at Masons Addition park yesterday.

Press liaison officer Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings said police are classifying the matter as a sudden death until they can get more information.

“Around quarter to 10 this morning, we understand that the victim was here playing a game of basketball when she reportedly collapsed,” CSP Skippings said at the scene.

“We are going to have an autopsy performed to find out exactly what went wrong (and) why she collapsed on the park today. We can’t say if she had any previous medical condition or known to have any,” she said.

CSP Skippings added she was told some of the residents attempted to try to revive the teen, but were unsuccessful.

“After they couldn’t, they were able to contact EMS who came and recognized there were no visible signs of life.”

According to someone who identified themself as a relative of the teen, the victim is La’Bree Bonaby.

Asked if the teen complained about feeling ill before collapsing, the press liaison officer replied: “Nothing, so that’s why we’re saying that we have to have an autopsy performed to find out what went wrong. Obviously, something went wrong and she collapsed.”

The death left bystanders and those who were playing on the court noticeably devastated. Bystanders were heard wailing and sobbing at the scene.

The incident prompted CSP Skippings to call for more people to learn CPR.

“I always encourage persons to try to know the basic steps in CPR because you never know when something is going to go wrong and so with this particular incident as we talk about it I want to encourage Bahamians and residents to reach out.

“You have Red Cross. You have some of the medical facilities around. Reach out to them and see if you can learn at least basic steps in CPR because one day you never know when you can use it and that very time that you use it you can actually save a life.”

Quote Zimbabwe cricket icon Sinikiwe Mpofu dies aged 37 just weeks after husband passed away

Zimbabwe Cricket have announced that coach and former cricketer Sinikiwe Mpofu has died aged just 37 less than a month after her husband, fellow coach Shepherd Makunura, also passed away

    By Matthew Cooper Sports Writer
    15:38, 9 Jan 2023 UPDATED15:44, 9 Jan 2023

Zimbabwe women's assistant coach and former all-rounder Sinikiwe Mpofu has tragically passed away at the age of just 37, less than a month after her husband died.

In a statement, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) said that Mpofu was "pronounced dead on arrival at a medical facility after she collapsed at her home in Masvingo" and that a post-mortem was due to be carried out to determine her cause of death.

Mpofu notably played in Zimbabwe's first-ever women's international in December 2006 and moved into coaching after announcing her retirement from playing, coaching the Mountaineers women's team while also working with the national side.

Her Mountaineers side won the inaugural edition of the Fifty50 Challenge in the 2020-21 campaign and they were beaten finalists the next season in the Women's T20 Cup.

She met her husband, Shepherd Makunura, through cricket and the pair had two children together. Makunura was the fielding coach for the Zimbabwe men's team, but missed last year's T20 World Cup due to a battle with illness.

On December 15, it was announced that he had lost his battle with illness at a hospital in Harare at the age of just 46. ZC Managing Director Givemore Makoni offered "heartfelt condolences" after Mpofu's tragic passing just 23 days after her husband's.
