    Mod note from Bill:

On searching for 'Dance' threads, I found a whole bunch of them from years past, some of them with very inspiring posts. So just now I merged them all together, keeping the new title as Cara's Dance, dance, dance, the longest of them all and started by her in 2019.

Casey Claar's new thread Dance! isn't merged.... so now we have two main threads rather than half a dozen.

Thank you for that, Bill, and thank you for choosing to not merge my thread, which I would really like to keep focused within the specific theme of overcoming PAIN in the body, and regular people - you and me - all of us getting up off our back sides and hitting the floor. Not to exercise, work out, walk or hike or any other more such usual thing BUT TO DANCE. That thread is not about dances and other people dancing, but us dancing. Will there be any brave takers in the challenge? I hope so. It does "do" something to us inside. I would like to see even a bit of this something spread. People, common people used to dance. It seems something that is getting forgotten ( doesn't it? ). The younger generations, they are not dancing anymore. It was still all the rage when I was young. Everyone danced. Grandparent-figures all the way down to the great grandchildren. I truly feel it needs to be revived. It does something that may forever go away if not.

Is every mind connected to form a peer to peer network that creates the illusion of a shared reality, making the appearance of material reality a simulation created through shared beliefs?

I was doing some research work on grounding skills for anxiety and there is a technique called, "shake it out!"

This is to release the effects of the fight/flight/freeze response to stress, as it helps with any "freeze" dissociation, releases the stress hormones that can be troublesome and it resets the body back into the calming parasympatheic mode, which is the rest/digest/problem solving mode.

What does this have to do with dance?

Well, I found this video which is more of a dance version to the technique. I've used it myself and plan to use it most days, to reset my nervous system....and for fun!

It is a "Shake it off," dance.

Unless you're so humiliated afterward by your awkward dancing that your soul leaves your body in protest

That Pulp Fiction dance scene is great. We can all only aspire to be as cool as Vincent Vega.

The dancers I admire most are usually the ones who can't really dance at all but are unabashed in their efforts anyway. Totally unselfconscious and letting it all go. Not drunk moms at weddings, but something quite a bit different.

The first one that comes to mind is Michael Stipe in his video for "What's the Frequency Kenneth?". It's a very cool song from a kind of nerdy group of guys, Stipe being their uber nerd. But he's kinda possessed by the song, and while it would be easy to make fun of him, his movement is actually kinda cool (although he does very little moving at all for the first 30 seconds of the video)

Something like this? I've got the dvd of this movie and the intro, screensaver if you will, the repeating scene that plays before you start the movie and returns to after the movie has ended, has the long version of Emile Hirsch's dance that is absolutely priceless but I can't find it anywhere. Here's the short version:

I was a huge REM fan in the late 80s to early 90s.

From that phase I recommend the entire "Tour Film REM" from 1989 which is full of Stipe's strange hypnotic moves and antics on stage. It was even weirder and wilder than what you see in the Kenneth clip from 1994.

Here's from that film the 'Pop Song 89' (also on the official video which is/was censored now and then because he had 3 female dancers with him there and they wore the same top section). Visual quality is not good, I suppose it was an old VHS rip.

Here an entire playlist of more songs from that movie:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyGW...uJMI_3JARiEflf

At first Stipe wore a too-large suit, which makes me believe that he was actually influenced by David Byrne (who wore one too) and the movie "Stop Making Sense" (filmed 6 years earlier, in 1983) by the Talking Heads. It contains even more 'strange' and hypnotic dance moves. I love this movie as much as I love Tour Film REM.

Here's the suit on another song (and some other weird dances in between):

And so here's two examples from D. Byrne and Stop Making Sense (doing hypnotic dance moves in a very big suit):

As an encore here is the completely dadaistic "I Zimbra" with crazy dances again. Not even the lyrics of that song make any sense (hence the movie title 'stop making sense').

Before it is a cool and sweaty funkrock song played with three (!!!) live guitars.

To sum up, I strongly recommend both music films. They are 'just' concert movies but also pieces of art. Brilliant imv not just for the 'dance' moves but also for the music, of course.

Byrne and Stipe will always be the kings of weird amateur dances for me. What they did was intentionally weird but this made it so 'hypnotic' and mesmerizing.

    And art.

Always loved this: Fatboy Slim's 'Weapon Of Choice', sassily danced (who knew?!) by one of my favourite actors, Christopher Walken, in a deserted hotel.

Now, whether he could actually 'dance' or not, doesn't matter, as he's clearly going for it and thoroughly enjoying himself...

So this was an iconic pop music moment here, when Usher joined Michael Jackson on stage in 2001 for Jackson's 30th anniversary celebration. If you can compartmentalize what you might assume to be true about Jackson re child molestation accusations (and even Usher in light of all this Diddy stuff) and just watch this crazy collaboration, you can't help but be bowled over by the skill and gravity of it.

I think it quickly became more of a competition than a collaboration (big egos there ). You can tell Jackson felt he was being upstaged so he makes an effort to get out in front of Usher, who reacts by impersonating all Michael's moves. It's just one of those super cool and surreal moments you'll only see once in your life.

Little over a minute long. Usher comes out about halfway in:
