Senior Russian military official ‘plunges 16 storeys to her death falling from window’



Body of finance director of Western Military District found on pavement on Wednesday morning

A senior military official in Russia heavily involved in funding Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine has reportedly plummeted 16 storeys to her death in St Petersburg.

The body of Marina Yankina was found on the pavement below an apartment building in the city’s Kalininsky district shortly before 8am on Wednesday morning, according to local reports.

The Western Military District confirmed one of its employees had died, but refused to comment further – instead pointing local outlets to the authorities investigating her death.

Ms Yankina called her ex-husband to let him know she was about to jump, and told him that she was leaving her documents and packed belongings on the balcony, a local Telegram news channel claimed, adding that “the motives continue to be clarified”.

Her personal belongings were left on a common balcony on the building’s 16th floor, according to Tsargrad TV, a self-styled Russian Fox News, whose founder is sanctioned by the West.

Reports from Russia were conflicted over whether or not Ms Yankina lived in the building.

She previously worked at Russia’s Federal Tax service, and rose to the position as chief of finance within five years of joining the Western Military District as an entry-level staff member, investigative outlet Meduza said, citing local reports.

The 58-year-old was finance director of the Western Military District, one of the five geographical battalions which comprise Russia’s army, the leader of which Mr Putin has replaced multiple times since invading Ukraine last February.

She is the second senior Russian military official to die this week in circumstances reportedly deemed a suicide by authorities.

Major General Vladimir Makarov, who reportedly led the oppression of journalists, opposition activists and protesters in his role at the Main Directorate for Combating Extremism, was claimed to have shot himself on Monday, a month after being relieved of his post by Mr Putin.

I am an officer of the French Army. I have been reading your page for some time to get a different view of the conflict in Ukraine. Thank you for what you do.

If I write to you today, it is to tell you exactly what it is like to be an officer in a Western European army in 2023.

In concrete terms, we are constantly being told about “high-intensity warfare” and “the return of modern warfare”. We, specifically, are told about the importance of our role as armored officers, because “tanks will play a major role against our enemies”. We are constantly being fed a pro-war arguments, very anti-Russian, very pro-NATO discourses (no surprise there). In other words, we are in an era like in 1872, when France had just lost against Germany, and the whole country was in propaganda mode to prepare the “revenge” (we call this “revanchisme” in France).

That’s kind of the feeling I get (even if I don’t really see the revenge we would have to take on the Russians, Lol).

But this bellicose speech is a facade, like a cat growling at a bear hoping to scare it. In reality our army is in tatters. We are unable to maintain our Leclerc tanks for example: only fifty of them are functional, a shame for “the first army in Europe”… A shame for an armored cavalry officer like me… It is not better in other sectors of the army, we have for example almost no more CAESAR (thanks Ukraine!). In other words, we have neither tanks nor guns.

The French like to make fun of China, which they say is a “paper tiger”. The paper tiger is us. Our army was unable to eliminate 500 terrorists in Africa, it would not last 2 days in a real modern war.

But the most ridiculous thing is what? It is that our army is wallowing in this mediocrity. Like an old man who contemplates his reflection in the mirror, dreaming of his past glory. I’m thinking of a specific episode that happened recently and that justified my writing to you: an evaluation for my officer class that we just passed consisted in “eating properly” and “knowing how to set a table in a noble way”, to respect the tradition of armored cavalry officers (supposed to be particularly noble)… Funny if it was just some tradition. Except no: it was decisive. Those who misaligned knives and forks got very bad marks, which would be reflected in their career and choice of regiment. The French army breaks the ambitions of young people who have been preparing for 6 years to lead tanks, for a story of forks…

This army is ridiculous, it is only a shadow of its former self. It disgusts all the sincere French patriots: most of my comrades consider leaving the army as soon as they can. For this reason in particular, because the army brings nothing. But also because they do not want, for some of them, to be the minions of NATO while they enlisted to serve France…

You don’t have to worry about Western European countries, our arrogance is theater.

I give you my greetings, take care of yourselves and let’s pray (whatever our obedience) that this conflict will stop and that Europe will find again a peaceful and multipolar balance.

Scott Ritter does a long interview (on many different channels) almost every day. I prefer myself to listen to Col. Doug Macgregor (who is less passionate, more focused, less wordy and far more concise), but Ritter's deep feeling for what's happening, and his own integrity with regard to that, shines so brightly that it's hard for me to understand how he can be criticized unless one's a diehard, blinkered Russophobe. (And we do have a few Russophobes among currently active Avalon members.)

Here's his latest interview. I'm not specifically recommending readers to listen to this, but his integrity relating to everything he speaks about seems crystal clear.

The British edition of the Times published an article in which they wrote about the order and situation in the bunker of Zelensky and in his office on Bankovaya.

According to the Times, his journalist traveled to Kyiv and talked about the bunker with named and unnamed Ukrainian officials familiar with the bunker's regime operation. "Checkpoints with armed guards stand on every street surrounding the complex (Zelensky's office), access is granted only to those who have proper documents and a passport," the newspaper said.

It is noted that soldiers ask citizens for secret passwords that change every day: "often meaningless phrases that would be difficult for Russians to pronounce." In the building itself, the lights are not turned on, and the curtains are drawn, the newspaper writes. According to him, after the start of the special operation of the Russian Federation, the main representatives of the Ukrainian authorities were placed in underground bunkers. According to one of the sources of the newspaper, it was originally planned that the officials would stay underground for a week.
