Quote Peter Baddoo (29 year old MIT Math Instructor)

It is with a sense of deep sorrow that we write to inform you of an unexpected and tragic loss in the Math community. On Wednesday afternoon, Feb 15, our department was notified of the sudden passing of Peter Baddoo, at the age of 29, by cardiac arrest while playing basketball on campus.

Peter studied mathematics as an undergraduate at the University of Oxford, then completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge. He was an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellow at Imperial College prior to joining our department as an Instructor in January 2021.

Peter was a brilliant applied mathematician with broad research interests and activities that spanned complex function theory, fluid dynamics, and machine learning and data-driven methods. He was an exemplary teacher and colleague who gave generously of his time in assisting colleagues, graduate students and undergraduates alike. He was a catalyst in organizing social events for our postdoctoral fellows and instructors, for which he received a Math Community Service Award.

Peter was a lively, joyful young man, a gentle soul with a kind spirit and a ready smile. His interests extended well beyond mathematics, and included music (saxophone) and sport (lacrosse, squash and basketball). He dearly loved his family and friends, and was a devoted member of the Park Street Church. His last years were blessed by the love of his life who he was to marry this spring. Peter will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Quote Toews sidelined with Long COVID, immune disorder

    18H AGO

    BY CHARLIE ROUMELIOTIS
PRESENTED BY NATIONWIDE INSURANCE AGENT JEFF VUKOVICH

Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews provided an update on his health before Sunday's game in a statement through the team, revealing that his recent absence is because he's "still dealing with the symptoms of Long COVID and Chronic Immune Response Syndrome."B

    Here's the full statement:

"First of all, thank you to the fans and all those who have shown concern about my absence," wrote Toews, who missed the entire 2020-21 season with the illness. "I’m still dealing with the symptoms of Long COVID and Chronic Immune Response Syndrome.

"It has been really challenging to play through these symptoms. In the last few weeks, it has reached the point where I had no choice but to step back and concentrate on getting healthy. I am thankful for the patience and support of my teammates, the coaching staff, and the entire Blackhawks organization."

As a result, the Blackhawks are not expected to move Toews ahead of the March 3 trade deadline. It was reportedly a joint decision between the player and the team.

"We’re not thinking about that," Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson said. "We’re trying to help him to get back to full strength, and that’s totally secondary."

Toews hasn't played since Jan. 28, which was before the NHL All-Star break. He missed the second-to-last game with what the team called non-COVID illness, returned for one game and has been out ever since.

It's no guarantee that Toews will return this season, but Davidson seemed hopeful that he would at some point. They're just going to take it day by day.

"We know this has been a real difficult period for him," Davidson said. "We miss him being around the team and we want to get him back around the team and on the ice. But in the meantime, we’re going to work with him and support him in whatever he needs to make sure he’s feeling good and feeling strong.

    21 February 2023 5:20 AM GMT
    Adam Rittenberg
    ESPN Senior Writer

UNLV football player Ryan Keeler died Monday in Las Vegas, the school announced.

Keeler, a 20-year-old defensive lineman from Chicago, spent last season with UNLV after starting his college career at Rutgers. UNLV did not provide a cause of death.

"While I had the honor of knowing Ryan for only a couple of months, he already stood out to our coaching staff as an incredible person, student and teammate," Rebels coach Barry Odom said in a statement. "Our condolences and prayers go out to Ryan's family as we grieve along with them over this tremendous loss."

Keeler appeared in seven games for UNLV last season, recording eight tackles and a sack. He earned academic All-Mountain West honors with a 3.8 GPA.

UNLV players including defensive lineman Adam Plant Jr. posted about Keeler on social media Monday. Keeler's high school alma mater, Nazareth Academy in La Grange Park, Illinois, also posted about his passing.

"Words are hard to come by this evening as we grieve the sudden and tragic loss of UNLV student-athlete Ryan Keeler," university president Keith Whitfield said in a statement. "My sincere condolences are with Ryan's family, friends, loved ones, and teammates during this very difficult time."

Quote Heartbreak as volleyball player dies suddenly while playing on village court

    By Sarah Newton-John • 22 February 2023 • 15:02

22 February 2023, Cambodia: A 41-year-old man, who was playing volleyball in the heat of the day, suddenly collapsed and died while drinking water.
The volleyball player who dies suddenly was later identified as Nai Sophorn from Sen Monoram City, Mondulkiri (Cambodia).

Nai was playing on the village volleyball court in Kandal Village, Sangkat Spean Meanchey, which is in the same part of Cambodia as his home.

According to reports, temperatures, where the tragedy took place, reached around 29 degrees.

It is not yet known if the man suffered from any existing conditions, and the specific cause of his death remains undetermined.

Experts warn that exercising in hot weather accelerates fluid loss and if symptoms like hot body temperature, confusion, nausea and vomiting, dizziness and rapid pulse are left untreated this can lead to a life-threatening complication, heatstroke.

Volleyball is a national sport in Cambodia with international games held mid-year. Currently, the country is in the dry season, which has hot weather all year round.

Nai’s body was handed over to his family by the authorities for funeral arrangements, according to Nokorwat News Daily.

David Dippé, who was widely known as Sebastopol’s “grandfather” of skating and who rallied the community against a local ban on skateboarding in the early 1990s, died unexpectedly earlier this month, according to his family. He was 45.

Dippé grew up in Sebastopol with an avid interest for skating, only to be dismayed by the general poor attitude toward the sport. There were far fewer skaters then, and they were often viewed as rebellious. Skateboarding was banned in downtown Sebastopol and on school grounds, and local police would cite those who were skating in public.

So, he sketched out the makings of his dream skate park and, at age 12, attended his first City Council meeting with the goal of creating a space where skaters could come together to live out their passion.

His tenacious spirit and unending advocacy led him to gain the support of city officials and local police.

“It was a very cool thing since skaters and the police don’t always see eye to eye,” said Jeff Weaver, retired Sebastopol chief of police. “He was such a nice, balanced and reasonable guy.”

Dippé was one of five founding members who pushed for the creation of the Laguna Skategarden Park in the mid-1990s. Though the 15,000-square-foot state-of-the-art skate structure wasn’t constructed until 2008, Dippé became somewhat of a local hero known for his penchant to create change.

How Dippé treated others further shaped his legacy.

“He would just believe in you,” said Matthew Dippé, David Dippé’s younger brother. “He could always identify who people really were and had total faith in them. He could read people — it was quite remarkable.”

Asha Schechter skated with Dippé as a teenager. He remembers how Dippé would encourage and push him to keep trying a trick until he landed it. When he would, Dippé would enthusiastically run up and embrace him with a big “bear hug.”

“He was a ‘task master’ and had this intense dedication to everything he set his mind to,” Schechter said. “He was dedicated to getting it right and always hyped up everyone around him.”

Dippé, who was one of five siblings, felt happiest in nature, his family said. He loved hiking, fishing and canoeing.

And he lived life fully. He swam with sharks in The Bahamas and scuba dived at night through a sunken shipwreck in Indonesia. He had a deep passion for snowboarding, and was an avid “Star Wars” collector. He attended Santa Rosa Junior College and graduated from Sonoma State University with a degree in sociology. He was also fluent in American Sign Language, according to his mother, Ganelle Dippé.

“He lived a rich life,” Ganelle Dippé said. “We loved how he cared so much about people.”

In addition to skating, he dedicated his time and love to counseling kids and teens struggling with significant emotional and behavioral issues at Santa Rosa’s Willow Creek Treatment Center.

After working with Sebastopol’s honey and beekeeping supply shop Beekind, Dippé became a professional beekeeper, who rescued local beehives and educated others on the importance of bees to the ecosystem. He also presented at Sonoma County elementary schools and educated youth organizations such as the Independence 4-H Beekeepers Club in Sebastopol.

On Monday afternoon inside his family’s home, his mother took out a sheet of paper with lines from Dippé’s journal that read:

“I love that I love people that can’t be loved

I love the wrinkles on my Dad’s and Mom’s hands even before I watched the wrinkles form my own.

I love when my work is in a beehive and I witness everyone simply reacting in the way that their instincts predict them.

I love pressing my forehead against trees, the elders, and feeling safe in the woods after thanking them.

“I love that I know my brothers’ eyes so well and even when he is complaining, I know my love for him can never change.”

A celebration of life will be held from noon to 3 p.m. March 25 at HopMonk, 230 Petaluma Ave., in Sebastopol. Those interested in making donations toward Sebastopol’s Skategarden Park can call Sebastopol’s planning director at 707-823-6167.

Quote Teenager jumps into action, saves man having heart attack at local gym

    Nate EatonNate Eaton, EastIdahoNews.com

    Health Posted: Feb 22, 2023, 3:01 pm | Updated: Feb 22, 2023, 10:31 pm

IDAHO FALLS — A routine visit to Planet Fitness in Idaho Falls earlier this month turned into a night Grace Pontzer will never forget.

The 17-year-old was working out and chatting with a friend when suddenly, across the gym, a man fell off a treadmill.

“It didn’t fully register until I saw him on the ground and he didn’t get up. Then a bystander said, ‘Hey! I need help,'” Pontzer recalls.

The Idaho Falls High School senior became CPR certified just five months ago and never thought she would use her training so soon. But on that late evening at the gym, she bolted over to the man on the ground.

“I rolled him over on his side (and) he still wasn’t breathing so I rolled him onto his back and started CPR compressions,” Pontzer says.

Paramedics were called and Mardeplata Rutt, a nurse who happened to be at Planet Fitness, and others joined Pontzer as they alternated chest compressions on the man.

After four rounds, they put an automated external defibrillator, which was in the gym, on the man’s chest. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. The shock can potentially stop an irregular heartbeat and allow a normal rhythm to resume following sudden cardiac arrest.

“I got him responsive and he did have a pulse and was breathing by the time the paramedics got there,” she says. “Thank goodness he was alive.”

Dr. Blake Wachter is a cardiologist at the Idaho Heart Institute and is one of many health professionals who treated the man following his heart attack. He’s recovering now and is doing well.

“Grace absolutely saved this man’s life. Had he stayed on the ground a couple more minutes, he would not have had such a great outcome as he did,” Wachter explains.

Wachter says survival rates approach 95% if CPR and an AED are used on people within the first three minutes of cardiac arrest.

In an emergency, Wachter says the first thing to do is call 911 and then begin chest compressions.

“You want to go at a fast beat. You don’t have to worry about counting or whatever. Just do fast and deep compressions,” Wachter says.

AEDs are available in most public places and they’re easy to use. You turn it on, put the pads on the patient’s chest and the machine will walk you through every step of the way.

“If the patient needs to be shocked, and only if the patient needs to be shocked, it will deliver the shock and then the AED will instruct you to continue to do CPR,” Wachter explains. “If you were to put an AED on someone who did not need to be shocked, it wouldn’t shock them so you don’t have to worry about doing something wrong.”

Wachter is pleased Pontzer did everything right following the stranger’s heart attack at the gym. The teen will be honored at the annual Idaho Heart Foundation Ball on Saturday and she, along with Wachter, hopes her actions inspire others who find themselves in similar situations.

“I’m just so happy that he’s here. I’m so glad I could keep another person in this world,” Pontzer says.

Canadian politicians, Public Health Officials and healthcare leaders committed many serious crimes during the COVID-19 pandemic, but one of the most heinous was the forced COVID-19 mRNA vaccination of healthy child athletes in 2021-2022 so they could continue to play sports. Sometimes when I am thinking - I try to see what is not seen, and ask about what is missing? or what am I missing? I check this thread every day and it is [sadly] active everyday.

    So what am I thinking?

What seems to be missing is that heart disease is perhaps one of the worst fates for humanity in the world. Globally, around 18 million people die of it per year.

But what is more interesting, is most of the searches for year over year statistics end in 2o19. Usually, data takes 1-2 years to catch up to the present, but this one seems longer. There are sites with some people per 1oo,ooo statistics but they are not exactly up to date either.

It would seem that the element of cardiovascular issues, obesity, [in certain countries] would be Prime Targets for vaccine caused blood clots and heart attacks resulting in many, many more deaths than the typical 18 million annually [the 18m that is possibly not updated to the present].

    Where are these numbers?

The pro athletes are going to be a very small subculture of the population, but this thread covers student athletes which is a much larger segment.

What about the fit and active military? Some were forced to vaccinate. I realise some countries would not release this data.
What about the general fit and healthy that are athletic but not competitive athletes per se?

    But worse:

What about the unhealthy? Shouldn't these numbers be outrageous?

I can't remember the technical medical reason but I have read an explanation as to why the vaccines are more dangerous to actively fit people then to the inactive/unfit. I will have a look later and see if I can find it again.
