In software development this stands for Modified Until No Good.
Often pronounced "Munged".
But M.U.N.G. is recursive, and the second time round the 'M' stands for 'Munged'.
Modified until no good then modify that until it's even more no good. Then take the result of that and modify it again, etc, etc, etc, ...
In software production the best version is often the full re-write off the back off the original version being decommissioned due to being munged. But that takes longer than anyone first thinks, which is a long time to start with. It's easy to view the schematics of a car or a small building. These are physical things that have scaled drawings. For software there are millions of types of schematic drawings that show one dimension only. Some try to combine dimensions but they don't and just give you a headache.
Software is more analogous to writing than car production. You don't often get to start the book from scratch though, there's a monolithic equivalent of War and Peace, or a better one would be a series of books like LotR, or Game of Thrones. And taking this analogy further, your job as a "writer" in this case would be to expand on Thorin Oakenshield's character, his backstory, with major extra friends that hang around with him all over the story, and now also he wears a fancy hat.
They always wanted these "features", they just didn't have time to do it for the original release. Or something like customers are not buying because instead they're going for a competitor's book: The Dragonlance Series. Their dwarf DOES have a fancy hat. But to better them Thorin will have a fancy hat AND a group of crony friends that laugh at his jokes and follow him around.
Time is money so get a move on. The detail gets brutal as you get further into the book. Let it not go unsaid you have to know the book pretty well, and it doesn't memorize every detail of itself.
This is for the benefit of the civilization of 2027 where software developers are a distant memory.

A small API change had massive ramifications. The code stack is extremely brittle for no good reason.
Will ultimately need a complete rewrite.
