Good first thread. Seems to me, that this mature technology is not much talked about by even “preppers”. 10-4 good buddy.

I like your overview of the different types of radio available, like distance-capability, differences in antennas, legal requirement (a licence) in the case of one.

My questions: 1 - Regarding the solar activity dependency of the long range mode (“ham radio”?), are operators able to use Sun-forecast data and reports to plan comm timing? This is about current non-emergency ops, where at least the internet is working. I am thinking that without those resources, it would be ‘hit or miss’.

2 - Any idea if satphones (which, everybody else, were not mentioned) would keep working if any ground infrastructure went down? It would be SO cool if it was handset-satellite-handset, and those satellites kept on keeping on.

and powerfully the modulation gets better with an external loudspeaker

• ps. When you change Portable CB Radio HP 72 default settings from "EU" to "De" (Deutschland = Germany 🇩🇪 ) does NOT mean it "only works in Germany" it will work anywhere as you just use 40 extra frequencies that others might use too in your area of reach ... and if you often travel you might be positively surprised to connect to others on those extra frequencies.

I bought these radios, two of them. Boefeng? told they were really good but as you can see from the dust build up , I havent really used them. I dont know the does and donts as of yet and in an emergency would be kinda useless.

A rare atmospheric phenomenon allows a New York City firefighter to communicate with his son 30 years in the future via HAM radio. The son uses this opportunity to warn the father of his impending death in a warehouse fire, and manages to save his life. However, what he does not realize is that changing history has triggered a new set of tragic events, including the murder of his mother. The two men must now work together, 30 years apart, to find the murderer before he strikes so that they can change history--again.

It' 1999. Jim Caviezel stars as John Sullivan, a detective whose life is falling apart. Recently, he has split up from his girlfriend, he and his police partner Satch (Andre Braugher), are unable to solve a serial murder case that has been reopened due to the discovery of skeletal remains of a past victim. The thirty year anniversary of the death of his firefighter father (Dennis Quaid), is also approaching. John is beginning to sink in a pit of despair.

One night John stumbles upon his dad's old ham radio. He makes an effort to get the machine to power up once again. When he does and begins conversations with another operator, however, he realizes the person he is communicating with is his long dead father. Somehow, due to the presence of the Northern Lights, John is able to transmit back in time to 1969 and literally alter the course of his existence.

The concept of time traveling communication may seem far-fetched to some, and "Frequency" is a little hard to grasp at times, especially when the film never directly explains why the father and son are able to talk with each other through time. Notwithstanding, the production works as a science fiction thriller with supernatural overtones. While the filmmakers do succeed in convincingly constructing "Frequency," most audiences might have to leave logic at the theater entrance before viewing it.

"Frequency" is a well-structured motion picture; the movie is focused throughout. Although its story changes pace at different periods, for the most part the audience can follow along with the characters. This is a movie with a complicated and challenging story. Because of the film's complexity, we are enormously involved, if slightly confused. Screenwriter Tobias Emmerich links original and fresh feeling material here. Gregory Hoblit produces the right amount of action and suspense, combined with gentle emotions, to generate a film we have not seen before.

Dennis Quaid and James Caviezel are the perfect choices for the principal characters. Quaid performs with intriguing tension and appropriate receptivity. Caviezel dazzles with intricacy and dexterity. Offering refined supporting roles are Andre Braugher ("City of Angels", "Get on the Bus") and Noah Emmerich ("The Truman Show") who furnishes some light-hearted material as John's best friend.

Director Gregory Hoblit ("Fallen," "Primal Fear") clearly executes topics on screen. This film is overflowing with ideas and contains enough plot for a television series. However, "Frequency" is not without flaws. Sullivan's chaotic life is only vaguely portrayed. Although we do care for the character, more development would increase the relationship between the audience and he. Some of the make-up effects depicting age differences were disgraceful. Andre Braugher appeared as if his make up artists were straight out of junior high, slapping too much pancake cream plaster on him. The film's contrived climax concludes with a formalistic fight instead of continuing its battle of wits.

Despite a few unacceptable external problems, internally this is a very effective production. As a whole, "Frequency" contains a very encompassing story and places interesting characters in engaging circumstances. The movie is definitely worthy of recognition, but do not view it unless you plan on thoroughly discussing it afterwards.

Answer to QU1:

Regarding long range mode communications (HF) - High Frequency - (1-30Mhz). The quality of the communication greatly depends on the Sun's solar cycle. We are now entering Solar Cycle 25 which should last for about 11 years.

What this means is that the HF band is slowly going to pick up in activity and especially at night time it will provide extremly favourable conditions. I personally would use the 20m band as this provides the best long distance communication.

Here is the current forecast for the HF bands. These forecasts change every couple of days. If there is a Geomagnetic Storm this will affect the HF comms, usually from the CME coming towards the earth.

Answer to QU2:

I don't think your satellite phones would work as these would probably require a base station to convert the satellite phone to a landline or internet signal and then to another person. Hope this helps.

Yes, I remember this movie it was very fascinating to watch. Another movie that I recall is Contact by Judie Foster 1997. It's a brilliant movie. She got started in Radio Astronomy because her father was a ham operator.

Well, that handheld radio is a 2m/70cm VHF/UHF 5-watt transceiver. It will provide you with a basic 10-15KM distance, depends where you are, if you're surrounded by big buildings and mountains then that distance will decrease. It looks like a basic analog radio. 2m is 144Mhz and 70cm is 440Mhz. I don't know what the law is in your country, but here in AU, you need to be licensed to use this one. Unless you are just listening in (receiving), but these days most radio operators use digital voice and there are several different standards, too many keep up with. You can try finding out the local analog repeaters in your area and dialing that into the frequency and see if that picks something up. Hope this helps.

• ps. When you change Portable CB Radio HP 72 default settings from "EU" to "De" (Deutschland = Germany 🇩🇪 ) does NOT mean it "only works in Germany" it will work anywhere as you just use 40 extra frequencies that others might use too in your area of reach ... and if you often travel you might be positively surprised to connect to others on those extra frequencies.

Good stuff. Yes, the 27Mhz CB radios are good for short-distance communication like 10-15 Kms. You will get more coverage if your radio has the SSB (Single Side Band) option. That's what we generally use with our Amateur Radio.

I was surprised to see that your CB frequencies also have digital modes like Packet and SSTV really interesting.

Channel 24 = 27.235 Mhz (International Channel for Packet Radio 1k2)
