An entirely charming piece of film from Berlin in 1945 after its liberation. I've chosen to place it on this thread as its appropriate in recognition of the 78th anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War

Today's Victory Day, marking the defeat of Nazi Germany, we remember one of the most famous moments from newly liberated Berlin. The video shows Lydia Spivak, a young Red Army woman, dancing and directing traffic in front of the Brandenburg Gate.

She was born in Volgograd and joined the war in 1942 in the ranks of the Red Army when she was only 18 years old. She was thrown into the unbelievably difficult task of capturing Berlin. Her performance was captured on film by a cameraman named Anatoly Aronov and immediately went viral around the world.

After the war she returned to her native village and worked at a library before becoming a nurse. It was there that she saw her famous photo for the first time, shown by one of her patients in the "Rabotnitsa" (The Woman Worker) magazine.

She was awarded the medals: "For the Liberation of Warsaw", "For the Capture of Berlin" and "For Victory over Germany".

Maria Limanskaya – The Inspiration Behind It All

The person responsible for inspiring this iconic moment was actually Maria Limanskaya—a Ukrainian dance teacher who had been teaching Spivak since she was 15 years old! At 98 years old today, Limanskaya is still alive and kicking! In fact, many believe that it was Limanskaya’s expertise and training that enabled Spivak to perform with such grace under such intense pressure on camera back in 1945.

When asked about her student’s performance after watching the footage decades later, Limansky said “she danced so beautifully even though there were bullets flying around them… I’m proud of Lydia.”

There are literally hundreds of video reports about Victory Day (today, 9 May), celebrated all over Russia and the CIS states. (Besides Russia, these are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.) I'll post a few of them below.

First, here's an iconic historical photo of the Russian flag being hoisted over the Reichstag in Berlin, taken on 2 May 1945 by Yevgeny Khaldei. Two soldiers did this together: 20-year-old Rakhimzhan Koshkarbaev and 19-year-old Grigory Bulatov.

May 9, known more as a #VictoryDay - it is very special memory for all of us, who was born in USSR. 4 years of war, more than 27 millions of casualties, in every family some of loved ones do not return from that war. 1941-1945 was very difficult time not only for Russian's, but for all nations of the Soviet Union - Ukrainians, Belorussians, Kazakh's, Uzbeks, Caucasians - and they all together was defending motherland. This days Nazism is rising the head, and it is very sad for me that this is happening in #Ukraine - where I was born and live for 40 years. Attempts to re-write a history, to present a Soviet Union as equals to Nazi Germany is very worrying, this is why I'm posting a link to my first documentary what I was produced about #WW2 - "The Will of Victory". There is no narrative in that film, only footage that we are restored and colorized and music. My dear friend Robert Ferretti directed that film, film was awarded at Beverly Hills Film festival in 2012. For Americans who don't know, this plaque is the 'Victory Handshake' between US and Soviet (Russian) soldiers located at the US World War II Memorial in Washington DC.

It represents Elbe Day, April 25, 1945, the day Soviet and American troops met at the Elbe River, near Torgau in Germany, marking an important step toward the end of World War II in Europe.

I never thought I would have to explain to many of my fellow Americans that, yes, the US and Soviet Union (Russia) were allies fighting against the Nazis in WWII.

Everyday we lose US WWII veterans. Therefore, it becomes increasingly important for the rest of us to tell their story. As a nation we owe it to them to be sure the truth is never lost.

‼️🇷🇺🇵🇱 Russian Ambassador in Poland was prevented from laying flowers at the memorial cemetery in Warsaw

The Russian ambassador arrived at the memorial cemetery to honor the fallen and lay flowers, but a crowd of angry Poles prevented him from doing so, demanding that he remove the St. George Ribbon. He was forced to leave.
"Rashists, Rashists," the crowd shouted.

Last year in Poland, our diplomats were doused with red paint on May 9.
