No need to watch this video below (unless you want to!), but it was significant for me because of a compellingly rational theory suggested by Alexander Mercouris which I confess had never occurred to me. I can easily summarize it.

One contingent of the west (those pushing for a peace settlement) is urging Ukraine to launch their offensive now because they know it will fail.

Then — after whatever catastrophe ensues, which is guaranteed — they can confront all the hardliners (including Zelensky himself) and say:

"Look, this hasn't worked. And it's not going to work. You have to see this now. So we MUST find a peace settlement somehow. There's no other option."

Chechen unit on the offensive in Donbass – MOD 31 May, 2023

An Akhmat special ops force is attacking Ukrainian troops near the town of Maryinka, the Defense Ministry has announced

Russian forces are conducting offensive operations against Ukrainian troops in the area outside Donetsk in Donbass, the Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

In a statement, the ministry announced that assault detachments of the Russian 5th motorized rifle brigade and an Akhmat special forces unit are successfully attacking Ukrainian troops near the town of Maryinka, around 30km west of the capital of Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).

The Akhmat unit is part of Russia’s National Guard and is based in the Chechen Republic. It was named after Akhmad Kadyrov, the region’s first president and father of current leader, Ramzan Kadyrov.

The reports of successful attacks come after Kadyrov declared on Tuesday that Chechen units would face combat in the DPR, adding that troops “are getting ready for assault action.”

The ministry also claimed that Ukraine had lost 200 soldiers in the Donetsk area, as well as three armored and 12 transport vehicles, one artillery piece, and two multiple launch rocket systems.

Russian forces have also destroyed Ukraine’s last navy warship, the Yury Olefirenko, according to the statement. The Soviet-era landing ship was sunk by a high-precision strike in the port city of Odessa, the ministry claimed.

It added that in the last 24 hours, Russian air defenses had intercepted 12 missiles launched from US-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), as well as one UK-supplied long-range Storm Shadow missile.

The Russian military has destroyed Ukraine’s “last warship,” the Yury Olefirenko, in a high-precision airstrike, the Defense Ministry in Moscow said on Wednesday.

“On May 29, as a result of a strike by a high-precision weapon of the Russian Aerospace Forces on a warship mooring in the port of Odessa, the last warship of the Naval Forces of Ukraine, the Yury Olefirenko, was destroyed,” the ministry stated in a report shared on its Telegram channel.

A day earlier, war correspondent Andrey Rudenko also reported that the Yury Olefirenko had been sunk after a series of overnight airstrikes on military facilities in Odessa, citing Ukrainian sources.

Rudenko claimed that a fire had broken out on the deck of the vessel, which is said to have caused the detonation of ammunition in the hold. The journalist said that significant losses had been reported among the crew.

Ukrainian officials have yet to confirm the sinking of the ship. Oleg Chalyk, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, told Reuters that he would not respond to Russian claims, and that the Ukrainian Navy would not disclose the details of any losses.

Originally named the SDK-137, the Yury Olefirenko was a type 773 medium landing ship that was built by Poland in 1971 for the Soviet Navy. It was transferred to Ukraine in 1994 and renamed the Kirovograd, and was stationed in Crimea.

When the peninsula voted to reunite with Russia in 2014, the vessel temporarily came under the control of the Russian fleet. However, it was later returned to Ukraine and towed to Odessa, where it received its latest name in 2016.

Britain ‘de facto’ at war with Russia – Medvedev 31 May, 2023

The former president issued a warning after London condoned a drone attack on Moscow

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has described the UK as waging an “undeclared war” against Russia. The comment came after Britain’s foreign secretary condoned a large-scale drone attack on Moscow earlier this week.

In a Twitter post on Wednesday, Medvedev accused London of being Moscow’s “eternal enemy.” The former leader, who currently serves as deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council, claimed that based on international law, “including the Hague and Geneva Conventions with their additional protocols,” Britain “can also be qualified as being at war.”

The former president argued that by providing Ukraine with weapons and training, the UK “de facto is leading an undeclared war against Russia.”

Medvedev hinted that this could have direct ramifications for “public officials” in Britain.

His tweet cited remarks made on Tuesday by UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, who said Ukraine has the right to “project force beyond its borders to undermine Russia’s ability to project force into Ukraine itself.”

Cleverly further claimed that striking “legitimate military targets” in Russia is an acceptable part of Ukraine’s self-defense.

Germany to force Russia to close consulates 31 May, 2023

Berlin explained that the shutdown of four facilities came in response to Moscow imposing curbs on the German presence in Russia

Russian diplomatic staff will be required to vacate four of the five consulates in Germany by the end of the year, the German Foreign Ministry has announced. Berlin also revealed plans to shut down three of its own consulates in Russia.

On Wednesday, a spokesperson for the ministry accused the Russian government of “escalation” by imposing a ceiling on German diplomatic and other personnel in the country at 350 individuals in total.

According to the diplomat, this “unjustified” move will lead to a “very considerable reduction” of the German presence in Russia. To wit, Berlin will close its consulates in the cities of Kaliningrad, Yekaterinurg, and Novosibirsk. Cultural missions, such as the one at the Goethe Institute, will also have to be reduced to a bare minimum.

It is in response to these measures that Germany decided to shut down the Russian consulates in the country.

“Our decision works for the Russian presence in Germany reciprocally,” the foreign ministry spokesperson explained, adding that Berlin seeks to ensure parity in the number of representatives working in the two respective countries.

Türkiye won’t attend key NATO meeting – Sweden 31 May, 2023

Ankara holds the keys to the bloc’s enlargement, but Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu will skip the gathering in Oslo

Türkiye’s Mevlut Cavusoglu will not attend a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Oslo this week, Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said on Wednesday. Cavusoglu’s absence means no immediate progress will be made on Sweden’s bid for NATO membership, despite Stockholm’s insistence that it is now ready.

Billstrom told Reuters that he had hoped to meet Cavusoglu in the Norwegian capital, but that the two would talk at a later date as part of an agreement they signed last year in Madrid.

This agreement, Billstrom said, “is much more important than two ministers sitting down and drinking coffee.”

Sweden, Finland, and Türkiye agreed last year that the two Nordic nations would lift arms embargoes on Türkiye, extradite alleged Kurdish and Gulenist terrorists, and crack down on the activities of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) within their borders, in exchange for Ankara lifting its veto on their accession to NATO.

Accession to the US-led bloc requires the unanimous consent of all existing members. Türkiye signed off on Finland’s bid in March, after it passed stringent anti-terrorism legislation, while Billstrom said that similar legislation entering into force in Sweden this week should satisfy Ankara’s demands.

Apart from Türkiye, Hungary is the only NATO member that has not ratified Sweden’s membership application. Budapest has cited Stockholm’s support for legal action against its conservative LGBT and migration policies as the key factor behind the impasse.

I. Remember as a kid watching the tv in th he evening and seeing casualty counts, maps of fighting and embedded reporters almost every evening from the jungles of Vietnam. I was talking to my buddy today and we are both vets. I asked him when do we see anything on Ukraine on the evening news, in fact most of what we keep seeing is how much weekly money is being sent over there or this dip shxt senator going over there saying best investment the u.s. has ever made. Politician Graham go ride your own turd off a cliff, best my axs. I'm not saying there isn't anything happening but eastern Ukraine still has a luxury car market, hell the finance minister of the Ukraine just bought a 400 k rolls Royce.

As for Russia, i,m betting we hadn't seen 10 percent of this advanced technology. At the end of the day I am very skeptical of what's really happening over there and what is being spoon fed to us here in the states.

And we hadn't even touched on the Biden let's make a deal dog and pony show, is it door number 1 , 2, or 3.
