Three cheers for these folks. It's easy to forget what an odious institution is McDonalds, especially if you avoid going through the 'Golden Arches'. Very few businesses represent the concept of rampant consumerism gone amuck as perfectly as McDonalds.

I'm sure Avalonians know plenty about this subject, so I won't belabour the point. But I will add one other point later in the thread, which stems from my personal experience of the company

Exactly, Celine! I was just thinking of that video as I read A New Hope Reborn's post.

For those who haven't seen that video yet-- THIS is what a four year old McDonald's cheesburger looks like:

Bravo, suburbian Melbournites! You guys did SO well!!

Before 'buying into' (pun intended) the '4-year-old cheeseburger'... I have posted another forum where there was much discussion about it; I had posted a few comments on the topic. I have not visited this forum until now (4 months?); and I just noticed the last post (Jan 9 2011) where I obviously 'upset' someone with my few posts - wow, lol. I hope I don't do the same here.

For clarity, I am not advocating McD's nor am I against - just for what it is worth.

    Further to my earlier post...

I just wanted to say, that I was part of the disposable labour force at Mcdonalds. Because I had been 'trained', I could go pretty much anywhere and get a job.
All the stores run on the same formula and layout, like a machine..very impersonal. But the machinations behind everything are precision engineered with only profit in mind. You could write books about the ill dealings of this corporate demon.

I am only going to reference one conversation I had with an upper management person (if you're interested in making big bucks fast, just open a Mac franchise), because it illustrates in a nutshell the most insidious aspect of Mcdonalds.
It had to do with their advertising strategy. He said.."We target the kids...always the kids...you know why?...Because they'll bring their parents in, and when they're older, they'll do the same thing with their kids."

I was just a teenager then, didn't really understand what he was on about, I thought he was just spouting idealism. Years later, 1986 London, I was handed this leaflet...What he had said came flooding back. That leaflet led to the longest running libel battle in legal history. Macs spent millions, the Leafleteers represented themselves. McDonalds did not like this leaflet, folks.

    THE Leaflet. [PDFhttp://www.eurosur.org/somosmundo/informacion/mcdonalds/factsheet.html][/PDF]

It was distributed covertly by the thousands, please be careful everyone. This is the soft underbelly of the dragon. This was the days before the internet, but the battle is still the same. Monsanto (there, I said it!), Mcdonalds...the faceless giants. How do you fight this kind of impersonalism?

    Personally. One person to another.

We can't underestimate the power of what these people in Australia have done, or the people in France.

Yeah, that's the one. Sorry about my pdf link not coming out right.

The leaflet is called: 'What's Wrong with McDonalds'

You can google it. Straightforward truth...they still try to suppress this leaflet. It's so well composed.
