Default Vintage film, TV, documents, and photographic footage from down the years

    Library directory: https://avalonlibrary.net/?dir=Vinta..._1800s_onwards
    --------------------------

    Hi all

After some consideration, and support from beloved colleagues on the team here, I've decided now to create a library directory devoted to vintage film and photographic pieces which currently begins at 1888, with this piece (with thanks to Bill for sourcing it ):

The First Movie ever made - Roundhay Garden Scene 1888 by Louis Le Prince

From the YouTube description, along with a fair few intrigues too:
Roundhay Garden Scene 1888 World's Oldest Surviving Film

Louis Aime Augustin Le Prince Roundhay Garden Scene was recorded on Eastman Kodak paper base photographic film using Le Prince's single-lens camera. In the 1930s, the National Science Museum (NSM) in London produced a photographic glass plate copy of 20 surviving frames from the original negative,[8] before it was lost.

The copied frames were later printed on 35 mm film. Adolphe stated that the Roundhay Garden sequence was shot at 12 frames per second (fps) and a second film, Traffic Crossing Leeds Bridge, at 20 fps; however, this is not borne out by analysis of the film, which suggests a frame rate of 7 fps for both, which was the speed of reproduction used in the 2015 documentary film about Le Prince, The First Film.

Before there were motion pictures, as we think of them, there was motion photography, first achieved when Eadweard Muybridge used multiple cameras in 1878 to make “The Horse in Motion.” The project was commissioned by Leland Stanford, who was the governor of California and later the founder of the university that bears his last name, to try to determine whether all of a horse’s hoofs were ever simultaneously off the ground. But what qualifies as the oldest film—and what we could also call the first home movie—and certainly the oldest surviving (extant) film--may well be the “Roundhay Garden
Scene”, which was made in 1888 by Louis Le Prince, a French inventor.

It simply shows members of his family playing in a garden and lasts for all of …two seconds. Hardly a Cecil B. De Mille extravaganza. “Roundhay Garden Scene” was recorded in 1888, directed by French inventor Louis Le Prince and is believed to be the oldest known video footage to exist. According to the son of the director, Adolphe Le Prince, the movie is at fourteen in October 1888 included in Oakwood Grange, the home of Joseph and Sarah Whitley, in Roundhay, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England.

The film shows how Adolphe Le Prince, Sarah Whitley, Joseph Whitley and Harriet Hartley run around in the yard and laugh. Furthermore, we see that Sarah runs backwards when she turns around and that the slip of her coat of Joseph blowing up while he is on the turn.

In 1930, the National Science Museum (NSM), London, produced photographic copies of surviving parts from the 1888 filmstrip. This sequence was recorded on an 1885 Eastman Kodak paper base photographic film through Le Prince’s single-lens combi camera-projector.

Le Prince’s son, Adolphe, stated that the Roundhay Garden movie was shot at 12 frames/s (and a second movie, Traffic Crossing Leeds Bridge, at 20 frames/s), however the later digital remastered version of Roundhay Garden was produced by the National Media Museum, Bradford, which contains 52 frames, runs at 24.64 frames/s, a modern cinematographic frame rate, so it plays in only 2.11 seconds. The National Science Museum copy has 20 frames; at 12 frames/s, this produces a run time of 1.66 seconds. This historical film is surrounded by tragedy and mystery. On 24 Oct. 1888, ten days after the shooting of the film, Sarah Whitley died, the mother of Le Prince who acted in the film, aged 72. She was buried on October 27 at St. John’s Church in Roundhay.

Louis Le Prince has been heralded as the “Father of Cinematography” since 1930. A Frenchman who also worked in the United Kingdom and the United States, Le Prince conducted his ground-breaking work in 1888 in the city of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Roundhay Garden Scene and a Leeds Bridge were recorded several years before the work of competing inventors such as Auguste and Louis Lumière and Thomas Edison.

He was never able to perform a planned public demonstration in the United States because he mysteriously vanished on 16 September 1890, on the train between Dijon and Paris. His body and luggage were never found, but, over a century later, a police archive was found to contain a photograph of a drowned man who could have been him. Not long after Le Prince’s disappearance, Thomas Edison tried to take credit for the invention.

But Le Prince’s widow and son, Adolphe, were keen to advance his cause as the inventor of cinematography. In 1898 Adolphe appeared as a witness for the defence in a court case brought by Edison against the American Mutoscope Company, claiming that Edison was the first and sole inventor of cinematography (and thus entitled to royalties for the use of the process). He was not allowed to present the two cameras as evidence (and so establish Le Prince’s prior claim as an inventor) and eventually the court ruled in favour of Edison; a year later that ruling was overturned.

In 1902, two years after son Adolphe Le Prince, also an actor in the film, a witness statement was made regarding the disappearance of his father, he was found shot in New York and dead.

What I'm really focusing on are, in the main, scenes, not necessarily footage or snapshots featuring historical figures so much. Really it's a way of sharing rarer captures of moments in time.

I've always been captivated by these sorts of older film: unique moments in time forever recorded, never to be replicated Those focusing on people I always find most evocative, for example, this, from New York City in 1900:

Most of the films here at the moment are really no longer than about 2 minutes each time, and I'd suggest perhaps muting the overdubbed music, as lovely as it is, and just observe.

I do wonder if there's anybody clocking in here who would recognise anyone, or even themselves, being caught candidly going about their day-to-day. Perhaps members here of a certain vintage have been caught on a tube train

Here, from the 1960s and 1970s on the London Underground:
I've only just got a start on this and the representative sample of 60 or so film will inevitably expand over time. It is a little London 'heavy' at the moment but that will balance out, over time.

    Paris, 1902:
Contributions and suggestions are of course greatly encouraged, and more than welcomed

    Palestine pre 1948 in pictures

Next to impossible to be certain exactly when these were taken but it would have been quite some time before the occupation-proper of Palestine began, so assumed perhaps well before 1948, maybe even from the 1920s and 1930s judging from some of the building designs, cars, and dress, which suggest earlier 20th century

Flying Scotsman 1929 Stunt by Brave Actors

The Flying Scotsman was originally meant as a silent film, but with the introduction of sound they switched to speech halfway into production. For this reason some of the dialogue scenes come off as downright clumsy.

I've added this particular video because of the stunts (no CGI etc in those days), that it was half silent and half talkie and also because the starring female lead is my Great Aunt Kitty (professional name Pauline Johnson), who died before I was born.

    My absolute pleasure

This is Penn Station, New York City, photographed before its eventual demolition which happened in 1963. It leads one to wonder what in the hell possessed them to demolish it! Perhaps the question is in itself the answer.

Something a little more modern and an interesting piece of history especially for those of us fascinated by space exploration.

This piece of film was shot at exactly the time the Voyager 2 space probe was launched. Watch how they framed the lead-up to the actual launch with perfect timing - genius, with a little fortune mixed in I think

If they'd mistimed by even a couple of seconds they'd missed the actual moment....

A great endeavour. Always very much enjoyed watching these old movies. I posted a digitally enhanced version of the Roundhay Garden scene back here, and I think that also may be worth adding to the library.

And in the same post was a fascinating and beautifully clear sequence shot in San Francisco just weeks before it was devastated by an earthquake in 1906.

With improvements beings made all the time to AI many old films are finding a new lease on life. Taking the liberty of reposting a couple more of these for this archive.

    ------

Ordinary people doing ordinary daily things on an ordinary cold, grey day in Halifax, England in 1902.

    Comments:
All were dirt poor but they dressed smartly, clean white shirts and ties, hats and coats. Self respect is abundantly clear.

People looked happier than they do today

O happier times, they had less materialism, but more happiness

And to think in just 12 short years after this was filmed their world would change so drastically.

We've moved so far forward with our technology, our clothing, our transportation. Yet deteriorated so much in unity and spiritual happiness!

And this one, a day at the beach, 1921:

"When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace."

Thanks Tintin, I love this type of historic footage! The world seems so crazy at the moment it seems comforting to look back at a more laid-back age.

This is one of the Great North Road, the A1 which goes from London to Edinburgh - including a car parked at the side of the road. It looks a much more relaxing journey than it would be today. The channel, Rick followed by a load of 8s, has a lot of vintage footage on YT.

TinTin can you elaborate on Penn Station? Don’t want to derail, but with that great photo for reference…just a quickie if you could.

    Tnx🙂

A great endeavour. Always very much enjoyed watching these old movies. I posted a digitally enhanced version of the Roundhay Garden scene back here, and I think that also may be worth adding to the library.

And in the same post was a fascinating and beautifully clear sequence shot in San Francisco just weeks before it was devastated by an earthquake in 1906.

Ah, the San Francisco shot - I have seen that actually but hadn't captured it; it's quite a remarkable piece of work, I have to say

I'll add another colourised version without Denis' commentary sourced from elsewhere. Really great.

Many thanks for including this here

Here's another really interesting one (for UK motorists) that could be added to the library, depending on criteria. I saw it a while back and dug it out -- I simply loved it. It's a fascinating time capsule of UK roads, towns, and cities as they used to be. I know a lot of these places, and to be honest many of them have hardly changed at all. Another interesting observation are driving habits -- there being just about as many idiots on the road then as there are today!

Also, love the Mk II Jag. What a motor!

A lot of thoughts here. Just love watching the transition between the eras. But it’s a very unsettling feeling when I can see trajectories emerge through the different era footages. I don’t like the trajectories. I can see it seems/is/was inevitable, but I don’t like the trajectories. Extremely interesting to visualize raw nonCGI footage and discern what it says about where we were, who we were, where we are now, who we are now. And the inevitable journey from there to here.

    Great thread TinTin.

Brilliant! Thanks. That's definitely one for the collection.

Here's some film I made about two and a half years back, which really isn't vintage, at all, so definitely violates any criteria, but may be fun to share
