Meteor ? ... Or something else?

A bit of story ...

I was standing outside the other night, facing out toward the lake, it was late but the night was clear and the moon was full or almost full and there was plenty of moonlight - enough to see quite clearly.

Suddenly, I could hear something flying through the air from my left at a very high rate of speed, and carried on in a mostly horizontal movement off far to my right.

Judging by the sound, it wasn't very large, and my reaction thoughts initially tried to go to "drone" as an explanation - but that made no sense because there was no propulsion noise, (drones are crazy loud and distinctive sounding), it was going faster than any drone I have seen, and it was dark, late at night - it didn't compute.

I was thrown off because I couldn't see anything at all - yet I should have been able to see something. It wasn't very far away from me from what I could tell by the sound, maybe 500 meters at most?

I would estimate the speed at well over 100 mph (160 kmh), and the sound seemed to just literally be the sound of the air whooshing around a small, rough object at an extremely high rate of speed.

The only explanation as to why I couldn't see anything came down to two conclusions - it was invisible, or, it was very small - maybe softball or cantaloupe size at most - otherwise I am sure I would have seen something.

There was no light, glow or tail, or any evidence of propulsion - just this intense "whooshing" sound as it went by that lasted a mere couple seconds.

The only thing that I can practically explain this as, would be perhaps a small cooled meteor fragment that had come in from Taurid meteor showers, currently in full swing. At the same time, I never heard any impact after it went by. The area is rural enough that a small, slow-ish meteor could have simply landed in a nearby forest with no one the wiser.

I did once see a UFO flying over the lake when I was younger - one of those small apparently glowing / metallic spheres, but this area is not known as any sort of hotspot for UFO sightings or activity. No military bases or anything like that around here.



What do you guys think? Any other ideas on what this might have been besides a small, cooled, meteor fragment that flew by? A sign?

Do you think it may have been some waste material jettisoned from an aircraft overhead, like an ice block or something of that nature?
Like they were dumping bathroom waste from an altitude?
I've heard of that happening before.

This book is related to the question in general, but not specifically and I can think of nothing to add to speculation here, but it's interesting.

However, if you are interested in history that never made it to the main stream, you may want to take a look at this book. It's about anomalous objects that have been reported coming from the sky by historian Charles Hoy Fort. He includes extensive references from scientific literature and newspapers. He does not include anonymous 'high level government or scientific people'.

Readers may find something in this book that comports with personal observations, however. Hope y'all enjoy.

I enjoy listening to books like this while doing other things. He does have an interesting writing style 😊

Charles Hoy Fort, 1874 - 1932, was a Dutch-American writer and researcher into anomalous phenomena.

Jerome Clark writes that Fort was "essentially a satirist hugely skeptical of human beings' – especially scientists' – claims to ultimate knowledge". Clark describes Fort's writing style as a "distinctive blend of mocking humor, penetrating insight, and calculated outrageousness".

Writer Colin Wilson describes Fort as "a patron of cranks" and also argues that running through Fort's work is "the feeling that no matter how honest scientists think they are, they are still influenced by various unconscious assumptions that prevent them from attaining true objectivity. Expressed in a sentence, Fort's principle goes something like this: People with a psychological need to believe in marvels are no more prejudiced and gullible than people with a psychological need not to believe in marvels."

Fort's books sold well and remain in print. Today, the terms "Fortean" and "Forteana" are used to characterise various anomalous phenomena.

No, it was one single object and moving more or less horizontally.

I've had something flyover me in past that just made a fluttering sound, wasn't fast, worked out it was a Stealth Helicopter, wasn't seen it until it was quite far off. Like it was Infront of it's own sound (stealth)

Other place I've heard things fly over so fast , no visuals, was like a bullet zipping over. I would hear it go one way then a little bit later it would come back. Many times.

Many things up there to make noises.

I did see a little wisp of smoke above me, just under cloud level. that gave a little high pitch zip sound. That was a fragment of some sort, glad it wasn't a big one 0.o

There are birds that fly at night where I live, they can be quite loud as they rush by overhead, from your description it's the same thing. The first few times it happened I found it very disconcerting, that's how loud it was and how fast it was moving. Plus, at night, when everything's quiet and you don't expect to hear such things, it can really throw you off.

Orionids. active from September 26th to November 22nd. Peak Night: Oct 21-22, 2023.
Southern Taurids. active from September 23rd to December 8th. Peak Night: Nov 5-6, 2023.
Northern Taurids. active from October 13th to December 2nd. ...
Leonids. active from November 3rd to December 2nd.

Very common, it's highly dependent on the atmospheric entry speed and angle when considering the visibility, atmospheric burn rate & potential sonic booms etc...

Plus, at night, when everything's quiet and you don't expect to hear such things, it can really throw you off.

Definitely not a bird. Lots of birds around here, but nothing that would be flying horizontally at over 100 mph at night, and it was far too loud. Most of the birds have flown south for the winter, and the ones that are still around are crows, woodpeckers and various smaller birds. Swans are still around but they fly relatively slowly and are large enough to be easily seen.

Very common, it's highly dependent on the atmospheric entry speed and angle when considering the visibility, atmospheric burn rate & potential sonic booms etc...

Definitely is the best fit.
