The Little Broom

Maybe some will identify with this?

While sweeping the floor this morning, I was struck with thoughts about the broom . How a broom was invented by someone at some point in history and was brought along through the ages, now forgotten and pretty much taken for granted. Somehow I became preoccupied with this as I was sweeping the floor.

It was a marvelous invention, how individual sticks and bristles tied together , would push things along, backed up by secondary rows, grabbing what was missed and so on.
And that this simple invention, not needing energy, not disturbing or polluting its surroundings would perform magically , and often better than vacuums.
I enjoy sweeping floors.

There was no reason I should have done this unusual mental journey on this broom but it just came over me.

About a half hour later, I got my coat on to walk to the store. As I walked out my door, I passed the garbage area in my hallway on my left. It had only one item in it.
A little handmade broom !

Why was this here? A lone handmade broom like one I imagined being first created .
I brought it home where it now sits in the corner and I have been pondering this strange event ever since.

What does this mean?

I happened to be pondering brooms myself just yesterday, Doug!

Like you, I was thinking how ancient these tools were - surely one of the first, when the first primates picked up a twig and used it to brush themselves off, or to brush something away. And then soon learned to group a bunch of straws together for better effectiveness.

I got to thinking about brooms when I watched the video below, and pondered on the gals dancing with their brooms.
So primal, the energy of brooms. I can see how they meshed into the primal energy of feminine nurturers and thus became equated with witches.

I will confirm that indeed they are! A snippet from yesterday's dream log:

"Broom fire, — the bottom portion of an industrial push broom catches fire in the back of an older woman’s car. The car is driving in the center lane out on the street. The instant it happens there is a younger man who sweeps it out of the car onto the road behind the woman’s vehicle. I am observing this perceptually from one of the shops alongside the street. I think he is bringing the thing too far back behind the woman’s car for his safety. The attempt to put out the flames is causing there to be a lot of smoke. An oncoming car in that lane might not see him. Police and fire trucks arrive in droves. The firemen get the fire put out. As they are all driving off I think to myself that I should thank them. I lean myself out the front door, and wave at them shouting {{{ thank you }}}. They see me, smile and wave back, {{{ you’re welcome }}}."

Even today I still can't get over the seeming randomness of the bottom portion of a broom. All of things. But now it seems this concept is making the rounds through a few of us. Interesting!

The first thing that came to mind was it may be a message that the universe is listening to you and all the syncronicities with others here. The broom itself, all the fibers working togehter can perform wonders as a whole. Don't forget the simplicity of the natural world that can provide answers to complex looking new problems, it's already within us if we work together. I like the new little broom

The broom that someone discarded is wonderful. Does the thread look really old? Isn't it amazing how long the natural bristles on a broom which are basically cellulose fiber from a plant last? Don't you wonder about the history and age of the broom. The person that made that broom probably knew just what type to plant stems were needed, found enough and cut, shaped and carefully tied them together. Think of the locals and floors it might have cleaned over times.

I once bought my sister in law a most beautiful old styled broom that she actually had on her wall for years.

Just yesterday on a cleaning project I incorporated the use of three brooms. One is a push broom for large spaces, then a classic natural bristle broom and finally I have a nylon broom which is good for corners and stuff against the wall. I was cleaning the garage which was long past due.

I also love the synchronicity of the event. I am so glad that lovely broom has a place of honor and didn't just get tossed. As I have been rehoming a bunch of my possession I find that the few things I am inclined to keep are things that have an interesting story associated with them. Think of the people that stop by that you can share your fun story with!

Oddly enough the very first thing I did this morning was to go to the cupboard and get my broom! I never do this!!

Some already said that above, but i will say it again, it is not an average broom, i saw one similar (longer handle) when i was on my 20's, the witch i know has one and it is used in rituals for cleaning negative aspect of ones life, cleaning the ritual area before the ritual starts among other ritualistic/symbolic meanings.. the thing that witches can fly or ride a besom is a myth though haha
Perhaps it was there waiting for you, if it was stolen from a witch and dumped in the place you found it, she will find it, so be open if come to that.

I remember my Mother calling another lady a 'besom' when she was extremely annoyed with her. Not sure how it became an insult but it widely used in the north of England and in most of Scotland when I was a boy.

Webster's Dictionary has this to say about the originations of the word.

Middle English beseme, from Old English besma; akin to Old High German besmo broom. (First know use predates the 12th century)

I do have a broom to clean my kitchen floor. But there is more to it.

Just the day before yesterday, while walking Basile, I encountered a thicket of real brooms (not in bloom yet) – the plants from the twigs of which actual brooms used to be made of. In the rural area of France where I live the plants abound, showing their beautiful little stark yellow flowers – and brooms are still being made of them, at least by lovers of nature.

A linguistic note. In English the two names being identical, the idea that brooms are made of broom twigs is self-evident. In Dutch, the cognate of the English besom, bezem, is used for the cleaning tool, and the plant is called brem (the cognate of the English broom for the plant). In German the two words are entirely different: one uses a Besen, but the Besen is made of twigs belonging to a Ginster. In French one uses a balai made of genêt twigs, the latter being cognate with the German Ginster.

There is something odd with bezem and brem in Dutch, or besom and broom in English. Both words start with a b, and end with an m. Could they be related? They may very well be. An “intervocalic” s or z sound (meaning an s or z sound between vowels) has, in Indo-European languages, a tendency to be occasionally replaced by an r sound and vice versa. Linguists call the phenomenon “rhotacism”. A well known example: jurors aiming at justice. Or, using Latin/Germanic cognates: sisters being active in sororities.

English besom, Dutch bezem and German Besen all have an accent on the first syllable. But the English “o” in besom may point to, or represent a fossil of, an accentuation on the last syllable. In that case, the word may have been pronounced, in certain dialect variants, like “bzom” or "bzoom” in English, or "bzem" in Dutch. Rhotacism may then have transformed the "e" into an "r".

Ah!, no no.. the young man arrives on the scene very INSTANT the fire happens, firetrucks arrive in droves and get out the flames.

Thank you Ewan. The "besma” origin actually lends plausibility to my little analysis. Besma may have alternated with bsema – and the -ma be a suffix. In that case the noun may even have derived from a verb stem bes-. Which would imply that the activity came first, and that the plant is named after the activity. That, in turn, is, for the Nostraticists among us, not surprising – because Nostratic languages frequently have names for quite concrete things that are actually verbal derivatives. (After all, they derived from an extinct, highly-developed civilisation.) My favourite example being, as my philoNostratic readers on PA may recall, the word "nose", which is derived from a verb meaning "to breathe". Noses are breathers, and brooms (the tools) would then have been "brushers" – and the plants natural providers of "brushers".

For what it’s worth:

Is there any merit to the notion that your broom/little broom experience is you, either consciously or subconsciously, recognizing a need to remove the clutter that at some level you perceive in your life? The clutter being both corporeal and incorporeal. Physical and tangible on the one hand and/or emotional, spiritual and otherwise intangible on the other.

After all, what is the purpose of a broom?

And when we use one, do we not make decisions and choices about what is to be swept away and discarded, and what should not be swept away, but rather should be and is retained for some reason or purpose? A reason or purpose that may not be apparent now but will reveal itself.
