Israel: Document reveals criminalisation of word ‘martyr’ on social media

A document prepared by Israel’s Attorney General’s office reportedly reveals plans to criminalise social media posts containing the Arabic word for martyr "shaheed", as well as Quran verses used in particular contexts, Israeli news site Ynet reported on Tuesday.

The disclosure of the document came during secret deliberations of the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee in the Knesset, the Israeli parliament.

According to Ynet, Simcha Rothman, the committee’s chairman, accused public prosecutors of being “lenient” in pursuing those who shared “inciting” social media posts after the war on Gaza started.

Rothman made references to posts that included religious prayers, invocations to God and the use of the word shaheed.

In response, Deputy State Attorney Alon Altman revealed there was already a policy in place to deal with such posts but prosecution depended on the context, a reference to the document, which contains guidance on prosecuting those accused of incitement.

According to the document, using the word martyr to refer to someone killed by Israeli forces while “carrying out a terrorist attack” can be viewed as “ support or praise for the terrorist act”.

The policy also states that investigation can be initiated against users who post supplications to God linked to persons or events deemed connected to a “terrorist act”.

In unclear cases, investigations can be opened based on “reasonable suspicion”.

However, Altman said that the religious text is not criminalised in and of itself, according to Ynet.

Campaign of repression

Since the Israeli war on Gaza began in October, Palestinian citizens of Israel say they have faced repressive measures implemented by authorities, including arrests for social media posts, bans on peaceful anti-war protests, and dismissals from jobs and universities over their views on the conflict.

According to rights group Adalah, which advocates for Palestinian rights in Israel, hundreds of people have been arrested in relation to their social media posts since the start of the war.

Popular Palestinian folk singer Dalal Abu Amneh was arrested in mid-October following two social media posts that included links to charities working in Gaza and captions that read: “Lord, grant me relief and mercy” and “There’s no victor except God".

She was later released.

Palestinian citizens of Israel are the descendants of Palestine's native population, who remained within territory controlled by the nascent Israeli state in 1948. The majority of the Palestinian population was violently displaced by Zionist militias during the creation of Israel in 1948.

Today, there are more than two million Palestinian citizens of Israel, which equates to nearly 20 percent of the country's total population.

For decades, they have suffered under discriminatory laws and practices imposed by the Israeli state, and have long complained they face inequality.

UNRWA says found unexploded 1,000-pound bombs in Gaza schools


The UN agency for Palestinian refugees said Tuesday it had found unexploded 1,000-pound bombs inside schools after Israel pulled troops out of southern Gaza’s main city Khan Younis.

The Israeli army has carried out relentless air strikes and bombardments in Gaza since Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7.

UN agencies led an “assessment mission” in Khan Younis after Israeli forces withdrew from the embattled city last week, UNRWA said.

It found “significant challenges in operating safely due to the presence of unexploded ordnance (UXOs), including 1,000-pound bombs inside schools and on roads.”

“Thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) require a range of lifesaving assistance, including health, water and sanitation, and food,” it said.

Earlier this month, the United Nations said it would take “millions of dollars and many years to decontaminate the [Gaza] Strip from unexploded munitions.”

“We work off the rule of thumb that 10 percent of ordnance doesn’t function as designed,” UN Mine Action Service chief Charles Birch said in a statement earlier this month.

“We estimate that, to begin the clearance of Gaza, we need around $45 million.”

The October 7 Hamas attack that triggered the war resulted in the deaths of 1,170 people in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed at least 33,843 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.

What options does Israel have to strike back at Iran?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his immediate war cabinet are considering what action to take following Iran’s attack on Saturday.

Allies including the United States have urged Israel not to risk igniting a wider regional conflict, and President Joe Biden has made clear US forces would not join any retaliatory attack on Iran.

Here are some of the options which Israel may be considering:

Airstrikes

Israel could respond to the Iranian barrage with airstrikes of its own, particularly as Iranian air defenses are considered much less well developed than the multi-layer system that Israel and its allies deployed on Saturday night.

An Israeli air force officer told a briefing with reporters that the air force was ready to defend Israel and added: “Some of defense is to react and attack if needed.”

“And that is put to our government and the cabinet and for them to decide how, when and if,” the officer said.

Such an attack could hit strategic facilities including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) bases or nuclear research facilities.

Former intelligence officials say it would be less likely to hit civilian infrastructure such as power plants, and would need to avoid civilian casualties. This would be both to ensure no further loss of international support and also because of the assessment that the Iranian authorities are vulnerable to popular pressure over political repression and the dire economic situation. Significant civilian casualties would be considered likely to rally Iranian public support behind the government.

Israel could also hit proxy groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon or Iranian targets in countries such as Syria and Iraq. However, the fact that Iran directly attacked Israel for the first time suggests that any such action would be only part of a wider response that would also target Iran itself.

Cyber attack

Israel is believed to have carried out numerous cyber attacks in Iran over the years, on infrastructure ranging from petrol stations to industrial plants and nuclear facilities, and a repeat is considered among the likely options for retaliation.

Any such attacks could interfere in highly visible areas such as energy production or flight services. As with direct airstrikes, former intelligence officials say they believe Israel would avoid attacks on infrastructure such as hospitals to reduce the impact on the general population.

Covert operations

Israel is believed to have previously carried out a number of covert operations inside Iran, including the assassination of several of its senior nuclear scientists.

Such operations could be carried out both inside and outside Iran.

Diplomacy

In addition to military and intelligence strikes against Iran, Israel is stepping up diplomatic efforts to isolate Tehran, including by extending sanctions. Foreign Minister Israel Katz has also renewed pressure on European countries to join the United States in declaring the IRCG a terror organization.

What a load of rubbish :D Irans attack was a huge embarrassment for them. It was, however, fantastic to see how the allies responded. UAE and Saudis provided the intelligence and Jordan, Britain and Israel worked together to shoot down the missiles and drones.
It's encouraging to see these governments work together. Hopefully it's a sign that stability can be achieved once Iran and Lebanon are dealt with. Even better if its through diplomatic means.

'Israel' interception of Iran missiles coordinated with Pentagon
In response to Iran's retaliatory missile strike, "Israel" coordinated closely with the Pentagon, as reported by Reuters, with a US operational liaison officer present in the control room of "Israel's" Arrow ballistic air defense system.

According to the report, the joint efforts of Israeli, US, UK, French, and Jordanian forces intercepted a significant portion of the incoming Iranian response.

Moshe Patel, director of missile defense at "Israel's" Ministry of Security, said the systems were synchronized with corresponding US systems in the region.

He stated to Israeli Channel 12 TV, "The systems share information, for a joint picture of the sky, and the sky was certainly busy... An American officer sits in the control room of the Arrow weapons system and essentially conducts the coordination with the US systems, shoulder-to-shoulder.

Maariv newspaper said the missile interceptions potentially cost up to $385 million. However, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, when questioned on Army Radio about the cost of interceptions, stated that he was unaware of the total expense.

Iran's overnight attack on Sunday was conducted in response to "Israel's" recent aggression on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

According to reports, the attack involved 185 drones, 36 cruise missiles, and 110 surface-to-surface missiles launched from Iran.

While the majority of missiles were intercepted, none of the hypersonic missiles fired toward "Israel" were intercepted by the Iron Dome.

Footage circulated on social media showing several Iranian ballistic missiles impact their targets at supersonic speeds.

The #1 take away on this one for me is that Israel spent at least a billion dollars in one night defending itself from Iranian drones and missiles. Meanwhile, an Iranian drone costs about a thousand dollars. I don't know what the cost of their missiles are, but I imagine it is less that what Isreal pays. So, my questions are:

1) If Iran continues to fire drones and missiles at Iran, what will be the cost Iran for attack Isreal vs. the cost of Israel to defend itself if this type of warfare continues to occur?

2) What is Iran's stockpile of these weapons and how quickly can they manufacture more? The same question for Israel's defensive weapons "a.k.a. Iron Dome"?

3) The landmass size of Iran is almost 80 times that of Israel. Much of Israel is densely populated, so this does not leave much room for military bases or places to launch weapons from, unless Isreal wants to emulate Hamas, whom they have condemned for launching weapons from populated civilian areas. Meanwhile, Iran has a tremendous mountainous land mass from which it can launch missiles and drones. In a war directed only a military installations, how much harder would it be for Israel to destroy Iran's military capabilities, than for the reverse to happen?
