Julian Assange freed in US plea deal

After a years-long legal saga, Wikileaks says that founder Julian Assange has left the UK after reaching a deal with US authorities that will see him plead guilty to criminal charges and go free.

Assange, 52, was charged with conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defence information.

For years, the US has argued that the Wikileaks files - which disclosed information about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars - endangered lives.

He has spent the last five years in a British prison, from where he has been fighting extradition to the US.

According to CBS, the BBC's US partner, Assange will spend no time in US custody and will receive credit for the time spent incarcerated in the UK.

Assange will return to Australia, according to a letter from the justice department.

On X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Wikileaks said that Assange left Belmarsh prison earlier on Tuesday after 1,901 days in a small cell.

He was then "released and Stanstead airport during the afternoon, where he boarded a plane and departed the UK" to return to Australia, the statement said.

‘Bring Julian Assange Home’ Campaigner Antony Loewenstein says WikiLeaks has released more “vital documents” about the way the world works than “any other organisation”.

Mr Loewenstein told Sky News Australia that the “legacy” of Julian Assange through WikiLeaks is “clear”.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has agreed to enter a plea deal with the Biden administration that would allow him to avoid prison in the United States, according to newly filed federal court documents.

Under the new terms, the Justice Department will seek a 62-month sentence, which is equal to the amount of time Assange has already served in prison in London while fighting his extradition to the US.

Such a relief - it brings me to tears - thank god Julian is out of that prison and with his wife Stella and their kids -

What US and UK governments and courts have put Julian through beggars belief -

I hope he can recover from the whole horrible experience and find personal happiness and peace - I think he will -

This is wonderful news! But I'm keeping fingers crossed until Wednesday... until Assange truly arrives in Australia... Apparently his first destination is USA-controlled Mariana Island where the plea deal will officially be taking place with Assange personally attending. Strange procedural requirement, isn't it? This has better not be a trap.

I echo all the above and imagine he will have accumulated a lot of PTSD trauma and baggage in the last 7 years and need a LOT of counselling. I wonder too whether part of the deal is for Julian and Wikileaks is to stfu effective immediately?
