Transgender - The Inability to Distinguish Facts from Wishes

New York Magazine has a new cover story, by the trans writer Andrea Long Chu: “The moral case for letting trans kids change their bodies.” A jeremiad in support of the idea that children must have absolute political agency, it makes the Unabomber manifesto read like a Shakespeare sonnet. The money passage:

We must be prepared to defend the idea that, in principle, everyone should have access to sex-changing medical care, regardless of age, gender identity, social environment, or psychiatric history.

A lot of the piece is standard-issue woe-is-me ****-everything cartoon nihilism you’d hear from any laptop-class liberal arts product, arguing for a generalized smashing of the patriarchy, among other things by attacking the biological conspiracy to produce those units of material labor value known as babies. Complete abolition of norms would be an “impossible task,” Chu notes sadly, but that doesn’t preclude their “collective reimagining” by an alliance of intersectional victims working toward a Marxian paradise free of “oppressive systems,” which of course include the nuclear family.

The nihilism Taibbi points to is also the major theme the French anthropologist Emmanuel Todd takes on in his book "The Defeat of the West".

Mr. Todd does believe that certain of our values are “deeply negative.” He presents evidence that the West does not value the lives of its young. Infant mortality, the telltale metric that led him to predict the Soviet collapse half a century ago, is higher in Mr. Biden’s America (5.4 per thousand) than in Mr. Putin’s Russia — and three times higher than in the Japan of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. While Mr. Todd is, again, not judgmental on sexual matters, he is judgmental on intellectual ones. The inability to distinguish facts from wishes astounds him at every turn of the Ukraine war. The American hope early in the war that China might cooperate in a sanctions regime against Russia, thereby helping the United States refine a weapon that would one day be aimed at China itself, is, for Mr. Todd, a “delirium.”

Back in January Todd expanded on the inability of distinguishing facts from fiction, which is also the basis of transgenderism, during an interview with Le Figaro. From its English translation:

Q: Over time, haven't you become a bit of a reactionary? I was brought up by a grandmother who told me that, sexually speaking, all tastes are part of nature, and I'm faithful to my ancestors. So, LGB, welcome. For T, the trans issue is something else. The individuals concerned must of course be protected. But the fixation of the Western middle classes on this ultra-minority issue raises a sociological and historical question. To establish as a social horizon the idea that a man can really become a woman and a woman a man is to assert something that is biologically impossible, it is to deny the reality of the world, it is to assert the false.
Trans ideology is therefore, in my opinion, one of the flags of this nihilism that now defines the West, this drive to destroy not just things and people but reality. But, once again, I am in no way overwhelmed here by indignation or emotion. This ideology exists and I have to integrate it into a historical model. In the age of the metaverse, I can't say whether my attachment to reality makes me a reactionary.

The intentional denial of reality, as it is currently practiced in the West, is not a new phenomenon. It is the basis of neo-conservatism from where it has crept over to the progressive side.

As Ron Susskind wrote in his portrait of the first years of the Bush junior presidency:

The aide said that guys like me were "in what we call the reality-based community," which he defined as people who "believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality." I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. "That's not the way the world really works anymore." He continued "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors … and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."

Karl Rove, the Bush advisor Susskind had quoted, displayed the same lunatic nihilism that is represented by those who argue that children, teenagers or people generally should can freely chose their gender. It is an attempt of "creating other new realities". It represents a total denial of actual reality and of the common values derived from it. The Bush administration failed in its endeavor to create new realities in Iraq. The current regime in the West will fail likewise with regime change in Russia. So will others who deny realities.

The author of the Todd book review, Christopher Caldwell, adds:

Fighting a war based on values requires good values. At a bare minimum it requires an agreement on the values being spread, and the United States is further from such agreement than it has ever been in its history — further, even, than it was on the eve of the Civil War. At times it seems there are no national principles, only partisan ones, with each side convinced that the other is trying not just to run the government but also to capture the state.

I see a very similar denial of reality, followed by nihilism and a lack of values, at the top of the current European leadership. The loss of the common view of things is splitting societies on both sides of the Atlantic.

However, with regards to transgenderism, some sense of reality is still trying to survive:

"We have concluded that there is not enough evidence to support the safety or clinical effectiveness of (puberty suppressing hormones) to make the treatment routinely available at this time," the publication by NHS England stated.

Puberty is a natural process which often includes a temporary confusion about ones identity. Blocking a kids puberty to further some ephemeral confusion some may have during those time is in my view criminal.

To then find myself on the same side of an issue as some staunch conservatives, and getting attacked for it, is mildly disturbing.

Ontario has been ordered to pay for surgery for a resident who is seeking to have a vagina constructed while leaving their penis intact.

Denying the procedure would infringe on the person’s Charter-protected right to security of the person, an Ontario court said in its ruling.

The unanimous decision by a three-member panel of judges of Ontario’s Divisional Court could expand access to a novel “bottom surgery” for people who identify as non-binary, meaning neither fully male nor fully female.

The Ontario resident, identified in court documents as K.S., has been locked in a legal battle with the Ontario Health Insurance Plan since 2022, when OHIP denied a funding request to have a penile preserving vaginoplasty performed at a clinic in Austin, Texas.

The surgery, which is not available anywhere in Canada, involves creating a vaginal canal, or opening, without removing the penis.

K.S., 33, was born male but identifies as female dominant and uses a feminine name.

OHIP denied her request for funding, arguing that the procedure is not included on its list of sex-reassignment procedures, and is therefore not an insured service.

K.S. appealed OHIP’s decision to Ontario’s Health Services Appeal and Review Board, arguing that forcing her to have her penis removed would invalidate her identity and be akin to an illegal act of conversion therapy.

She also worried about the risk of complications and urinary incontinence from the urological rerouting, and the risk of orgasm dysfunction. She argued the procedure she is seeking abroad is like standard vaginoplasties performed in Ontario, but without the additional procedure, namely, the penectomy.

The appeal board overturned OHIP’s decision, ruling that a vaginoplasty is among the genital surgeries listed for public coverage and need not inherently include removal of the penis. The board therefore ruled the procedure eligible for public funding.

OHIP appealed the board’s decision to the Divisional Court, arguing the review board erred in finding a penis-sparing vaginoplasty is specifically listed as an insured service, and that it failed to consider that the unorthodox procedure is considered an experimental procedure in Ontario, and, therefore, not eligible for funding.

Just because vaginoplasty is listed as an insured service doesn’t mean any type of vaginoplasty qualifies, OHIP argued in court.

The court disagreed. Vaginoplasty and penectomy are listed as discrete, separate services on Ontario’s list of surgeries eligible for funding, the court said. “The fact that most people who have a vaginoplasty have it done in a way that also involves a penectomy” doesn’t change the provision. If the province had intended for only one type of vaginoplasty to be insured (vaginoplasty with penis removal) it should have drafted the list differently, the court said.

The court said the appeal board’s conclusion was also consistent with standards of care developed by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) — an influential group whose guidelines for gender-affirming care for children and youth were found to lack “developmental rigour” in a sweeping review released this week.

The WPATH standards “expressly refer to vaginoplasty without penectomy as a surgical option for some non-binary people,” Justice Breese Davies wrote in the court ruling.

While the court said it didn’t need to address Charter arguments, if there was any ambiguity concerning what should or should not be covered, the review board’s interpretation was also consistent with Charter values of equality and security of the person, the court added.

“The Charter-protected right to security of the person safeguards individual dignity and autonomy,” Davies wrote. Requiring a transgender or non-binary person born male “to remove their penis to receive state funding for a vaginoplasty would be inconsistent with the values of equality and security of the person.”

“Such an interpretation would force transgender, non-binary people like K.S. to choose between having a surgery (penectomy) they do not want, and which does not align with their gender expression to get state funding, on the one hand, and not having gender affirming surgery at all, on the other,” Davies wrote.

“Such a choice would reinforce their disadvantaged position and would not promote their dignity and autonomy.”

OHIP’s appeal was dismissed, and the province ordered to pay K.S. $20,000 to cover legal costs.

“This is a significant win for the transgender and non-binary communities,” K.S.’s lawyer, John McIntyre, told CTV News Toronto.

“We hope that OHIP decides to accept the decision of the court rather than seeking leave to appeal so that K.S. can move forward with her surgery she has been trying to get for years now.”

“K.S. is very happy with this unanimous decision,” McIntyre said in an email to the National Post. “The Divisional Court determined the existing language of the Health Insurance Act and the Schedule of Benefits clearly provided coverage for the procedure she sought.”

In earlier reports, National Post was told that gender-affirming surgeries at the Texas clinic range from US$10,000 to $70,000, depending on what is done.

So I underwent a routine medical procedure today, noting major, an in-and-out sort of thing. First though, I had to answer a series of questions, put to me by a nurse. Do I have any allergies, high blood pressure, have a pace-maker, recently undergone surgery -- this sort of thing. Then she asked me this:

Are you pregnant, or think that you might be?

Errr, what?

Guessing the position she was in I stepped softly around it, answering "No", which her form required.

But this question (to me) was of course ridiculous, and I couldn't help saying so. The response: she sagged in her seat, nodding in complete agreement. She went on to tell me, in a regretful tone, that she had to ask everyone this question (male or female), and if she didn't she would be sacked (understandably she didn't want to lose her job).
