Israel bans Al Jazeera: What does it mean and what happens next?
Al Jazeera said it will pursue available legal channels to protect its journalists from Israel’s ‘slanderous’ shutdown.

Israel’s cabinet unanimously voted to shut down Al Jazeera in the country on Sunday, immediately ordering the closure of its offices and a ban on the company’s broadcasts.

The decision was announced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on X. Hours later, Israel’s Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi published footage on X showing Israeli authorities – specifically inspectors from the Ministry of Communications, backed by the police – raiding the Al Jazeera office in East Jerusalem and confiscating the channel’s equipment.

Here is all you need to know about Israel’s Al Jazeera ban, and how it might affect reporting on the war on Gaza — and beyond.

Why did Israel shut down Al Jazeera?

The shutdown comes a month after Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, passed a law on April 1 that allowed Israel to temporarily shut down foreign media outlets — including Al Jazeera — if it deems them a threat to security.

In a previously recorded report, Al Jazeera’s Imran Khan, reporting from occupied East Jerusalem, explained the terms of the law further. Based on the law, the Al Jazeera website is banned in Israel, “including anything that has the option of entering or accessing the website, even passwords that are needed, whether they’re paid or not, and whether it’s stored on Israeli servers or outside of Israel”, Khan added.

Additionally, the Al Jazeera television channel is completely banned in Israel, he explained. Within the country, cable providers now show a message that the network is prohibited from the air, though in East Jerusalem, some people have told Al Jazeera that they could still access the channel on television as of Monday afternoon.

Khan added that the internet access provider that hosts aljazeera.net “is also in danger of being fined if they host the website”.

Akiva Eldar, a political analyst and contributor to Israeli newspaper Haaretz, told Al Jazeera that the shutdown is “a very populistic move to feed the beast of the public opinion that is very disappointed from the conduct of the government in Gaza and in the international arena”, adding that this is also “to please the partners from the radical right”. Netanyahu’s government relies on support from a band of far-right parties and leaders — many of them, like Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir, holding key positions in the cabinet.

Karhi’s office said that Al Jazeera is shut down for 45 days, and the shutdown can be renewed, in accordance with the law passed on April 1.

When the law was passed, Netanyahu said he would “act immediately” in accordance with it to stop Al Jazeera’s activity. However, the timing of the shutdown, a month later, coincides with crucial negotiations between Israel and Hamas on the war, mediated by Egypt and Qatar, where Al Jazeera has its headquarters.

Al Jazeera has been targeted by Israel before: Netanyahu threatened to shut down its Jerusalem office back in 2017, and an Israeli missile destroyed the building housing the broadcaster’s office in Gaza in 2021. Many Al Jazeera journalists — and in several cases, their families — have been killed in Israeli firing or bombing, including during the current war in Gaza.

    What was Al Jazeera’s reaction?

On Sunday, Al Jazeera released a statement condemning the shutdown, describing it as a “criminal act” and warning that Israel’s suppression of the free press “stands in contravention of international and humanitarian law”.

The statement further said that Al Jazeera would continue to provide news to a global audience.

What will the ban mean for Al Jazeera’s reporting?

Al Jazeera’s correspondents can no longer report from Israel, including occupied East Jerusalem. This is because both the main office in West Jerusalem and the office in occupied East Jerusalem were closed and equipment was confiscated.

Karhi said the equipment he ordered to be confiscated included editing and routing equipment, cameras, microphones, servers and laptops, alongside wireless transmission equipment and some mobile phones.

In the pre-recorded report, Al Jazeera’s Khan added that Israel is also banning any device used for providing content. “That includes my mobile phone. If I use that to do any kind of news gathering, then the Israelis can simply confiscate it”.

While it is unclear how the shutdown will affect the reporting from Al Jazeera correspondents who are in Gaza or the occupied West Bank, access to both Palestinian regions is controlled largely by Israel. Al Jazeera has called earlier attacks on its journalists and offices attempts to target its journalism and stop it from reporting on Israel’s assaults on Palestinians — including during the current war.

    Why is this significant?

Since the beginning of the war on October 7, Israel has largely blocked entry into Gaza for foreign journalists.

That has meant that Al Jazeera’s correspondents in Gaza have been among the few from a major international media organisation to bring the deadly Israeli bombardment and killings in the Palestinian enclave to a global audience.

In February, more than 50 international broadcast journalists signed an open letter to Egyptian and Israeli authorities to call for “free and unfettered access to Gaza for all foreign media”.

What are the reactions to the Al Jazeera ban?

“Israel makes much of being a democracy and I think the idea that it can simply close down an international broadcaster of considerable repute and history is atrocious,” Tim Dawson from the International Federation of Journalists said in an interview with Al Jazeera. “Sadly, it is part of a long set of actions that the Israeli government has taken to try and thwart free reporting of this conflict”.

The UN human rights office condemned the shutdown in an X post on Sunday.

Greek economist and former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis posted on X on Monday, condemning the shutdown. “Israel’s banning of Al Jazeera is one aspect of its War On Truth. It aims at preventing Israelis from knowing that what goes on in Gaza,” he wrote.

On X, many others referenced Israel’s declared plan to launch a ground offensive in Gaza’s Rafah, its latest such land assault in seven months of unrelenting war in which more than 34,700 people have been killed.

Diane Abbott, United Kingdom parliamentarian, also condemned the shutdown in an X post on Monday.

    What’s next?

Eldar, who spoke to Al Jazeera from Tel Aviv, said “This is, I’m afraid, not the last step.”

He said that other news outlets might also see a shutdown by the Israeli government. “We know that there are ministers, among them the minister of communication, that are looking at other networks, including Israeli channels, that are not satisfying the government”.

In November, Karhi, the communications minister, threatened Eldar’s newspaper, Haaretz, with sanctions over its critical coverage of Israel’s war on Gaza.

Eldar also added that he expected the law that the Netanyahu government used to shut down Al Jazeera to be challenged in court.

Al Jazeera also called on media freedom and human rights organisations to condemn the shutdown and is currently assessing what to do next. The statement published by the media network on Sunday said it would pursue “all available legal channels to protect both its rights and journalists”.

Israeli army pounds Rafah as 250,000 Palestinians face ejection

The Israeli military heavily bombed Rafah early on Monday morning, before ordering up to 250,000 Palestinians to leave parts of the border town ahead of a threatened ground assault.

At least 22 civilians, including eight children, were killed in air strikes that hit 11 homes across Rafah, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa.

The Israeli military dropped flyers ordering displaced people and residents to leave the eastern areas of the city near the fence that separates the Gaza Strip and Israel.

It said the military was “about to operate with force against the terror organisations in the area”.

Aid organisations warned that an attack on Rafah would not only be catastrophic for civilians in the area, but will also have a major impact on their ability to get food to northern Gaza where the UN World Food Programme chief has said a "full blown famine" is now under way.

"It is going to be catastrophic," Ziad Issa, head of humanitarian policy at the UK-based ActionAid, told Middle East Eye on Monday.

"Any prospect of getting aid inside Gaza now is very grim."

Issa said people in Rafah are panicked, concerned that they will not be safe even if they evacuate given their experiences in Gaza over the past seven months.

“People have been following evacuation orders since 7 October, yet you see people attacked in places where they have moved," Issa told MEE. “The concept of a safe zone is a very outdated concept.”

Melila Abu al-Khair, a Palestinian woman displaced in Rafah, said she will not be leaving her makeshift tent in Rafah because she simply has no alternative.

"My uncle is a kidney dialysis patient on a wheelchair. We have no cash and nowhere else to be. We don't know where we would go," Abu al-Khair told MEE.

"We will only die once. Let the army come and kill us here. But we will not leave."

Abu al-Khair, who is from Gaza City, said she has already been displaced several times. She had taken shelter at her home, her family's home and a school, which were all attacked.

"Where shall we go?" she asked.

While some people like her have refused to leave, others were seen fleeing the areas marked in the Israeli army orders.

Ahmad Abu Rizq, who has been taking shelter in Rafah, said he began moving the family's belongings once the orders came but with no destination in mind.

"I don't know where I'm going. They said there could be areas in the Mawasi area and that's where I'm headed. But I have no tent and I don't know if I'll find a place there," Abu Rizq told MEE.

He added he was forced to flee to relocate his daughter, who has a disability, away from the potential ground assault, but still feared it won't be enough to keep her safe.

"There are no safe zones in Gaza," he said. "Whatever you hear from the Israelis, it's all lies."

    Lack of clarity

According to Issa, Israel's ejection order also lacks clarity about how quickly people should leave and when they would be able to return, increasing uncertainty and anxiety.

It is also unclear what will happen to people who can't move, including patients at Abu Yousef Al Najjar Hospital, the main medical facility currently serving the Rafah governorate.

Issa said ActionAid does not have international staff in Gaza, but the organisation has been made aware that staff of other international NGOs are receiving orders to leave Gaza entirely through the Rafah crossing.

The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa, warned an Israeli offensive would have “devastating” consequences and has said its staff will not evacuate the city.

"The agency will maintain a presence in Rafah as long as possible and will continue providing lifesaving aid to people," the agency said on X.

Unrwa previously complied with Israeli orders to leave northern Gaza, a decision that was criticised by Palestinians who accused it of abandoning people who rely on its services.

    Evacuation timing

The evacuation orders came a day after a deadly Hamas rocket attack on an Israeli military site east of Rafah, and as mediators pushed for a ceasefire and a prisoner swap deal.

The Hamas attack on Sunday killed four Israeli soldiers and seriously wounded others after rockets hit a military site in the Kerem Shalom area.

The Israeli army closed the Kerem Shalom crossing with Gaza after the attack.

Also on Sunday, a Hamas delegation left Cairo for further consultations with the group’s leadership in Doha after two days of negotiations with Egyptian and Qatari mediators.

CIA director William Burns, who was also in Cairo over the weekend, flew to Qatar on Sunday night to continue pushing for a deal.

He is expected to fly to Israel on Tuesday.

In a phone call with US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gollant said that Israel made “many efforts” to reach an agreement, his office said on Monday.

He added that Hamas’ “refusal” has left Israel with “no choice” but to operate in Rafah.

Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to proceed with an offensive on Rafah even if a deal was struck.

Meanwhile, Hamas has accused Netanyahu of obstructing a deal.

The Palestinian group has insisted any potential deal must include a permanent end to the war while Israel is seeking only a temporary pause.

Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior member of Hamas, told Reuters the Israeli evacuation orders from Rafah were a “dangerous escalation that will have consequences”.

    Humanitarian consequences

Israeli leaders have threatened an offensive in Rafah for months despite widespread opposition by world leaders and humanitarian organisations.

The US, a staunch ally of Israel, has repeatedly said it does not support a massive Israeli assault in Rafah that does not take into account the safety of civilians.

Rafah had become overcrowded with civilians who fled Israeli bombardment in other parts of the Gaza Strip in recent months.

There are an estimated 1.4 million people taking shelter in makeshift tents in the small town.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday that Israel has not yet presented a plan to protect civilians in Rafah, saying a major military operation there would cause damage “beyond what's acceptable”.

Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN humanitarian office, also on Friday said an Israeli offensive there “could be a slaughter of civilians”.

He warned the humanitarian operation in the entire coastal enclave will suffer an “incredible blow” because they are run primarily out of Rafah, which has the only Palestinian land crossing not directly controlled by Israel.

The seven-month Israeli assault on Gaza has already devastated the Palestinian enclave and caused a humanitarian crisis.

The Israeli military has killed at least 34,600 Palestinians, the majority of them children and women, while a siege on the coastal enclave has left it on the brink of famine.

    Deatils of the ceasefire deal:

    #Hamas has agreed, but #Israel hasn't yet.

The people of #Gaza are celebrating, and if Israel disagrees and insists on attacking #Rafah, Hamas will not be blamed by the Palestinian people and will gain more support than ever.

The deals Hamas has agreed to include:
    1. Phase One: Temporary ceasefire and cessation of all military activity for 42 days. No drones over Gaza for 8 hours. Israel will withdraw from the Netsareem corridor, the Kuwait roundabout and all towns up to the Gaza border. The UN, the US and the Gulf States will draw up plans for the reconstruction of Gaza. Egypt, Qatar and the US President are the guarantors of the agreement. After 22 days, Israel will withdraw from Al-Rasheed Street and between the north and south. After the 22nd day, all refugees will return to the north.
    2. Phase two: Cessation of all military activity and a permanent ceasefire. Total withdrawal from Gaza, including from the "buffer zone": outside the borders of Gaza.
    3. Humanitarian and reconstruction plans to begin after the provision of temporary housing for the people of Gaza.

The exchange of hostages and prisoners will be included in each phase. Hamas has shown flexibility and lowered its demand for the number of prisoners to be exchanged.
All women, children and female reservists (under 19 and over 50) will be included in the first exchange. The list of names offered by Israel will be respected. Those included and alive will be released. The bodies of those killed by Israeli action will be handed over.

Every week, 3 prisoners/hostages will be released as long as the agreement is not violated.

Palestinian rockets pummel Netzarim, envelope settlements
Preceding the Israeli occupation forces' invasion of Rafah on Monday night, the Palestinian Resistance conducted a multitude of operations.

Amid the invasion, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad's (PIJ) al-Quds Brigades targeted the Israeli settlement city of Sderot, Kibbutz Nir Am, and other settlements with several salvos of rockets. The settlements are located to the northeast of the Gaza Strip.

As a result, sirens sounded in Sderot, Nir Am, Mefalsim, and Gevim, at 11:00 pm (local time).

Al-Qassam's Rajoum MLR plague Israeli occupation forces

Hamas' al-Qassam Brigades launched multiple attacks on Israeli occupation forces and worked jointly with several factions to complete a number of operations.

Following Sunday's attack on the Karem Abu Salem border crossing, which was executed using locally-produced Rajoum 114 mm Multiple Rocket Launchers (MRLs), al-Qassam Brigades continued to use the launcher to target the Israeli military on Monday.

Al-Qassam fighters targeted the Netzarim Axis, splitting the northern Gaza Strip from the rest of the besieged territory, with multiple short-rage Rajoum rockets on Monday morning.

Later, the Brigades launched a joint operation with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine - General Command's (PFLP-GC) Martyr Jihad Jibril Brigades, targeting Israeli occupation forces in the same area with 107 mm short-range rockets.

In another joint operation, the two factions' mortar units launched an attack on Israeli occupation forces positioned in Netzarim.

Soon after, al-Qassam fighters launched yet another attack on the Axis using 107 mm rockets. Operations on Netzarim did not stop there, as multiple other factions targeted the Axis in their own rocket and mortar attacks.

Occupiers in Netzarim face Monday hell

On Monday morning, al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades launched a concentrated rocket attack on occupation forces positioned in the Axis.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine's (PFLP) Abu Ali Mustapha Brigades launched two attacks on the Axis. The first came in coordination with the al-Mujahideen Brigades fighters, firing multiple rockets toward the area.

Later, Abu Ali Mustapha fighters launched another salvo of rockets toward the Axis, while the al-Mujahideen Brigades launched its own attack on the Israeli command post in Netzarim.

The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine's (DFLP) National Resistance Brigades launched 120 mm mortar shells toward the Israeli Sufa military site to the east of Rafah, which contains a parking lot for Israeli military vehicles.

    Al-Quds Brigades execute multi-dimensional operations

On the other hand, al-Quds Brigades fighters continued to execute concentrated and multidimensional attacks against Israeli forces.

In one operation, an al-Quds Brigades' sniper team shot down an Israeli occupation soldier positioned to the east of the al-Shujaiya neighborhood in the northern Gaza Strip.

The Brigades' mortar units also achieved direct hits to Israeli assets in Netzarim on Monday noon.

At 7:00 pm, rocket units launched an attack on Sderot and Mefalsim, as sirens went off in Gevim.

The Brigades then launched a mortar attack from the southwestern side of Gaza City, on the Netzarim Axis.

It is worth noting that the area from which the attack was launched was heavily bombarded and later invaded by Israeli occupation forces for months, showing the Resistance's ability to renew operations from supposedly "cleansed" areas.
