Checked my city’s latitude, and we’re at 53+ degrees, so ‘downrange’. 8-10 percent possibility of a “kill shot” (Ben D’s assessment) don’t alarm me. I figuratively will get some popcorn handy.

But glad to know that Big Gov is alert, and one would hope that our infrastructure will be protected. I have 5 gallons of good Edmonton tap water, so that might get me to when the North Saskatchewan River becomes drinkable (upstream discharges stopped). 5 days. But, am researching “rain dance”. ~8D

Doesn't poleward of 45 mean you are not downrange, but (somewhat) within range?






I have committed to family travel this saturday-monday, and don't like being hours away from home during this period one bit. One addition to plans is to ensure car is gassed up tomorrow afternoon upon reaching destination, as any local grid failure would mean gas pump failures as well.

"How bad can a solar storm get?
The worst geomagnetic storm in recorded history was the 1859 Carrington event, which was named for the astronomer who noticed the unusual spots on the surface of the sun — the effects of which hit the Earth 18 hours later.
That geomagnetic storm — a G5 — caused sparks to fly from doorknobs, blocked telegraph wires and caused auroras to be visible as far south as the Caribbean.
“So completely were the wires under the influence of the Aurora Borealis that it was found utterly impossible to communicate between the telegraph stations, and the line had to be closed,” wrote the telegraph manager of the Rochester Union & Advertiser at the time, according to Ars Technica.
Many effects at the time were spooky. Birds woke up and sang in the bright light of the storm, and telegraph workers across the Eastern Seaboard were able to shut off their batteries and transmit messages using only the induced current of the aurora for power.

A modern Carrington-class storm would be a very big deal, as Kathryn Schulz wrote in The New Yorker.
A National Academy of Sciences Report, Schulz summarized, found that “extensive damage to satellites would compromise everything from communications to national security.”
That, she wrote, was just the beginning. “Extensive damage to the power grid would compromise everything: health care, transportation, agriculture, emergency response, water and sanitation, the financial industry, the continuity of government. The report estimated that recovery from a Carrington-class storm could take up to a decade and cost many trillions of dollars.”

I'm not very conversant in longitude and latitude, even in the 7th grade this was true! Is it possible for someone who is to clarify the areas in the world that will be most impacted? Maybe I'm not the only one who would appreciate this..or maybe I am!! 😂

As best I understand, the impact(s) may well be over an extended period, and as the Earth rotates all of the Northern Hemisphere (including the US, Canada, Europe, Russia, the Middle East and China) could be affected. Right now, I believe it's impossible to predict with any certainty which areas might be foremost in the line of fire.

The good news is that (a) the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) may be visible much further to the south than usual (recommended: if you've never seen them, it's absolutely worth it), and (b) the Southern Hemisphere won't be directly impacted at all. (But if things do go haywire in the Northern Hemisphere, which is theoretically possible but seemingly not probable), then of course the whole planet might be knock-on affected in one way or another.

Jeez!!!! Read this carefully. Below is how Bret Weinstein's 2021 article started. I remember reading it when it was published — but now we see that he somehow imagined the date 'right'.

A personal comment. I don't believe this imminent event is the 'Killshot'. But it might start people talking about such a possibility, an increasingly likely thing to happen as the Earth's protective magnetic shield progressively weakens to almost nothing. (My own suggested timeline for a really serious incident is sometime round about 2028-29.)

Maybe posted elsewhere (merge and/or delete after its time), but we're in the strongest geomagnetic storm in 2 decades right now. For North Americans, it should be a good light show tonight, and possibly for the next few days as 6 CMEs have been recently hurled in our direction - not Carrington level by any estimation, but should at least give us a good light show.
