Default Digital wallet - cautionary tale

Foolishly I set up a digital wallet - Exodus - for some not very well performing cryptos. Unfortunately in a big clean up last year I threw out the only copy of my 12 word pass phrase and password

After a few emails with Exodus support it seems that I am stuffed.

    Lessons learnt:
1). have multiple copies of your login details in multiple formats on multiple devices
2). set up an account with the wallet provider. If I had have done that they could access the wallet from their end.

and probably a few more but I havent figured it out yet

Thanks, leavesoftrees. Great heads up. I'm a little surprised that an account would give them access, though. But I know nothing about crypto. I do know I have an ongoing struggle with all my Passwords...I am winning, barely.

This sounds like a backdoor disguised as some security feature, this sort of "features" are based on user trust, I would avoid any cryptocurrency that has it as a built-in mechanism, isn't safe at all.

Here is how I had done the time I was active into cryptocurrency: beside my thumb drivers I also had a notebook (paper) with all my seeds (the magical words) written by hand, so even if my computer goes completely damaged I still have access to my crypto from any other computer.

Paper Wallet is your best friend.

So sorry this happened! But I have one or two tech suggestions, which of course might be dumb ones. (If so, forgive me!)
    • If you were accessing your account on a computer, there may well be ways of retrieving your pass phrase and password. They'd be in your system somewhere. (But if you were using a phone, I'm afraid I have no ideas to offer.)
    • If you were using a computer, most browsers have fairly easy access to stored usernames and passwords in their preferences.
    • If you were using a computer and somehow that data got deleted, then if you'd previously backed it all up (e.g. using 'Time Machine' on a Mac) it would all be similarly retrievable.
But like some other readers here I know almost nothing about crypto accounts, so it may well be that none of this is useful at all.

Any idea how much your investment would be worth leavesontrees? Not much I hope.

I've slowly learned to value the concept of digital minimalism, which makes having multiple backups a lot easier. For example, there was once a time where my digital archive was around 70gb... of music, movies, games and software I might use. But backing up 70gb of data took hours, if not the whole day, which meant I'd only backup once every 6 months or so. I've since stripped all redundant data away. Songs I don't like I delete. Movies I've watched I delete and so on. I treat it like physical clutter. My entire digitial archive is now down to around 5gb, which takes about 5 minutes to backup once a week. My entire digital presence can be put on a USB pen in the time it takes to make a cup of tea. I never worry about data loss this way.
My free book Truthbombs now available.

Yes the digital wallet is on my computer. Unfortunately I am a bit lazy with backups so I dont think that's an option. it's not a huge sum of money ;.;.;. a few hundred dollars

It was only a few 100 dollars so not too bad. I posted this to warn people if you have big sums in your wallet to keep your passwords secure
sounds a big job to get rid of 65g of data. Have so many email, photos to wade through
