The FSB stopped an attempt to hijack a Russian aircraft carrying nuclear weapons to Ukraine.

Not carrying nuclear weapons(!), but capable of doing so. Here's a better photo of the plane, which is a supersonic bomber, large, fast and advanced.



This is an astonishing story, though it seems to make little practical sense. Besides embarrassing the Russians, what would they do with this aircraft?? If it fell into Ukrainian hands, the Russians would just destroy it immediately and easily, whether on the ground or in the air.

The use of explosive weapons has long defined the brutality of war. But a new and particularly destructive weapon has entered the fray in Ukraine: the thermobaric bomb, also known as a "vacuum bomb." These devices unleash a devastating blast wave and consume surrounding oxygen, inflicting horrific injuries and causing widespread destruction.

The battle for control of eastern Ukraine intensified in May 2024 as the Russian military ramps up its offensive in the Kharkiv region. The city of Volchansk has become a focal point, with Ukrainian forces facing a relentless barrage of artillery and air attacks.

Then, on May 21st, the fight took a terrifying turn. Russia deployed the ODAB-1500 thermobaric bomb for the first time. This weapon, nicknamed the "Father of All Bombs'' by some, is designed to unleash a brutal combination of extreme heat and pressure, devastating anything caught in its path.

The attack, reported by ANNA News, resulted in substantial damage to the building and inflicted severe casualties on the personnel inside. The exact extent of the losses remains under assessment. A video of the strike, shared on the Telegram channel Severen Veter, confirmed the involvement of the Russian air force, although the precise timing of the attack was not disclosed.

The Russian Defense Ministry has published evidence of Ukrainian biolabs producing toxic substances, and the Kiev regime's use of toxic chemicals against civilians.

Russian forces discovered a chemical lab in Avdeyevka used for producing toxic substances, said Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, Head of the Troops of Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defense of the Russian Armed Forces. Found in a destroyed building, the lab could produce at least 3 kilograms of toxic chemicals daily. Analyses revealed the presence of sulfuric acid and sodium cyanide, suggesting toxin production.

Furthermore, Ukraine used chloropicrin, mixed with chloroacetone, in areas like Donetsk and Gorlovka in May, and hydrocyanic acid in Belgorod's Graivoronsky District in June.

MOSCOW, July 8. /TASS/. The Ukrainian authorities’ allegations about a Russian missile strike on civilian targets are untrue, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

"The allegations made by Kiev officials about a deliberate Russian missile strike on civilian targets are absolutely untrue. Numerous photo and video reports from Kiev, which have been made public, make it clear that damage was done by a falling Ukrainian air defense missile launched from a missile system deployed within the city limits," the statement reads.

According to the ministry, the Russian Armed Forces carried out a high-precision strike on Ukrainian defense industry sites and air bases in response to Kiev’s attempts to attack energy facilities inside Russia. All designated targets were hit.

The Russian Defense Ministry pointed out that "the Kiev regime has been throwing such tantrums for years, each time ahead of a get-together (summit) of its NATO sponsors."

"The goal of such provocations is to ensure the further inflow of funds for the Kiev regime and a continuation of the war until the last Ukrainian," the statement added.

"Operational/tactical aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, missile troops and artillery of the Russian groups of forces destroyed three US-made HIMARS multiple rocket launchers and up to 10 foreign specialists responsible for their use and struck massed enemy manpower and military hardware in 122 locations," the ministry said in a statement.

The Ukrainian army’s losses in that frontline area over the past 24 hours amounted to more than 495 personnel, a tank, four armored combat vehicles, 14 motor vehicles and a US-made AN/TPQ-36 counterbattery radar station, it specified.

In addition, Russian troops destroyed three field ammunition depots of the Ukrainian army, it said.

Russia’s Battlegroup East gained better positions and inflicted casualties on two Ukrainian army brigades in its area of responsibility over the past day, the ministry reported.

"Battlegroup East units took more advantageous positions and inflicted casualties on manpower and equipment of the Ukrainian army’s 72nd mechanized and 58th motorized infantry brigades in areas near the settlements of Vodyanoye and Prechistovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic," the ministry said.

Russian forces also repelled an attack by assault groups of the Ukrainian army’s 123rd territorial defense brigade, it said.

Russian air defenses destroy 30 Ukrainian UAVs, five HIMARS rockets over past day

Russian air defense forces destroyed 30 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), four Hammer smart bombs and five HIMARS rockets over the past day, the ministry reported.

"During the last 24-hour period, air defense capabilities shot down four French-made Hammer guided aerial bombs, five US-made HIMARS rockets and 30 unmanned aerial vehicles," the ministry said.

In all, the Russian Armed Forces have destroyed 626 Ukrainian warplanes, 277 helicopters, 27,344 unmanned aerial vehicles, 540 surface-to-air missile systems, 16,528 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 1,369 multiple rocket launchers, 11,556 field artillery guns and mortars and 23,453 special military motor vehicles since the start of the special military operation, the ministry reported.

China’s Xi says Ukraine ceasefire in everybody’s interests

The Chinese leader also highlighted the need "to contribute to de-escalation as soon as possible"

BEIJING, July 8. /TASS/. Ukraine and Russia would be better served laying down their arms and finding a diplomatic solution to their problems, Chinese leader Xi Jinping said at a meeting with visiting Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

"It is in the interests of all parties to end hostilities and find a political solution as soon as possible," China’s state broadcaster CCTV quoted Xi as saying. "At present, following three principles is of paramount importance: preventing fire from going beyond the battlefield, preventing escalation and preventing anyone from fueling the conflict," Xi insisted.

He also highlighted the need "to contribute to de-escalation as soon as possible."

From zero to "hero" in five weeks: Why NATO training doesn't help Ukrainians

Over 40,000 Ukrainian troops have completed training as part of the UK-led Operation Interflex, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said during a press conference with his British counterpart John Healy in Odessa on July 7.

What's wrong with the much-touted NATO training of Ukrainian troops and can it prove effective?

▪️Operation Interflex, launched in June 2022, was designed to train ordinary Ukrainian men and women with little to no previous military experience "to survive and be effective in frontline combat," as per the UK government's website.

▪️Interflex's course is delivered over five weeks and includes "weapons handling, battlefield first aid, Law of Armed Conflict training, patrol tactics and rural environment training."

▪️Retired US Army Major General Paul E. Vallely and ex-Pentagon analyst Michael Maloof explained to Sputnik that it's virtually impossible to turn a Ukrainian soldier from zero to hero in five weeks or so.

▪️The training Ukrainian troops receive in different NATO countries also lacks uniformity which complicates combat coordination, CIA veteran Larry Johnson told Sputnik.

▪️Battlefield assessment by Germany’s Bundeswehr leaked during Kiev's botched counteroffensive in July 2023 said the Ukrainian military was failing to implement NATO training.

▪️Ukrainian soldiers slammed NATO training for being "rigid", "ineffective", and taken from manuals that were at odds with the realities on the ground in Ukraine.

▪️Politico reported in September 2023 that Ukrainian soldiers' training was based on NATO counterinsurgency warfare in Afghanistan and Iraq.

▪️Jack Watling of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) wrote in July 2023 that NATO troops and instructors appear unprepared for conventional warfare. Much of the training provided has been poorly designed and complicated by "bureaucratic constraints," as per the British analyst.

‘Untrue’: Russia slams Ukrainian claim of attack on civilian targets
Claims by Ukrainian officials that Russia deliberately attacked civilian targets in Kiev on Monday are “absolutely untrue,” the Defense Ministry in Moscow has stated.

The Ukrainian capital was rocked by a series of powerful explosions earlier in the day, according to numerous videos published by local media. Civilians on the ground were reportedly injured.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has accused Moscow of deliberately targeting a prominent children’s hospital, claiming that “it’s impossible that Russia does not know where its missiles fly and must fully answer for its crimes.”

Ukrainian Interior Minister Igor Klimenko has branded Russia “a nation of terrorists and scum,” adding that at least seven people were killed in the capital.

The Russian military confirmed firing a barrage of long-range missiles on Monday, but stressed that it was targeting military factories and airfields in Ukraine.

“Claims by representatives of the Kiev regime alleging a purportedly deliberate Russian strike on civilian sites are absolutely not true,” the statement said.

“Numerous photos and videos from Kiev irrefutably confirm destruction by a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile, which was fired by a launcher positioned inside the city,” it stated.

Russia reportedly used hypersonic air-launched Kinzhal missiles in the barrage. Senior Ukrainian officials have claimed that the weapons are vulnerable to interception by Patriot missile systems. Last week, a senior air defense commander said that no Kinzhal had pierced the American-made shield so far, despite Moscow firing over 20 of them.

“All the Kinzhal missiles launched at the Ukrainian capital since the deployment of Patriot systems was announced were successfully stopped. Not a single ballistic missile since May 2023 reached its target in the capital,” Colonel Sergey Yaryomenko, commander of the 96th air defense brigade, told the Ukrinform news outlet.

Moscow has previously said that Kiev exaggerates its interception rates. The Ukrainians claim to have shot down more Kinzhals than Russian forces have actually deployed, according to senior Russian military officials.

EU state testing bunker designs
Estonian authorities are planning to build a defensive line along the border with Russia by 2025

Estonia is preparing to test a series of prototype bunkers, set to be part of a fortification line along its 294-kilometer border with Russia, the news outlet ERR reported on Monday.

The project is set to include 600 bunkers and is expected to cost Estonian taxpayers some €60 million ($65 million). The government is still deciding on a final design for the bunkers, and is currently considering three different models. The Estonian Defense Forces will be testing the prototypes in September by firing 155-millimeter shells at them.

The government is yet to determine the exact locations of the structures, but the procurement process for building them has already concluded. The head of the infrastructure department at the State Center for Defense Investment, Kadi-Kai Kollo, told ERR that authorities are looking to place the bunkers on state-owned land, but will also be in talks with private landowners by the end of the year.

The construction of the so-called ‘Baltic Defense Line’ was initially announced in January by Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur. Latvia and Lithuania have also joined the project.

In addition to the bunkers, the defense line is set to feature anti-tank barriers, concrete triangles dubbed ‘dragon’s teeth’, razor wire, and anti-tank mines. It is noted, however, that these devices would only be put in place in the event of a conflict.

The authorities in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, announced last week that they had drawn up plans to ring the entire city with anti-tank obstacles, namely steel-beam ‘hedgehogs’ and concrete dragon’s teeth structures, before the end of the year.

Mayor Valdas Benkunskas said the city expects to have the obstacles ready by the fall of this year, claiming that Vilnius is “one of the main military targets, so it is necessary to do everything possible, in addition to military measures, to protect it.”

A number of NATO countries, particularly those in eastern Europe, have recently claimed that Moscow might choose to attack a member of the US-led military bloc once the conflict in Ukraine is concluded. The alleged threat has been used by the Western leaders as justification for increasing military spending and providing additional support for Kiev.

Moscow has vehemently denied plans to attack any EU or NATO nation, dismissing such concerns as propaganda. Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that such claims by Western leaders are “utter nonsense and intimidation of their own population just to beat money out of them.”

The video depicts not a single child being rescued but, instead, a bunch of military, some with their backpacks on, which is not usually seen during rescue operations and is indicative of them leaving their quarters with their stuff in a hurry.

Russia was targeting military objects in Kiev, and the strike on the hospital was caused by an AIM-120 air defense missile from the NASAMS system used by the Ukrainian side. This is evidenced by the proportional dimensions of the missile (diameter and length) and the nature of the damage (collapse of only a small part of the building and shrapnel damage on neighboring buildings). Footage showing shrapnel typical of air defense missiles was shared directly on Ukrainian Telegram channels.

The length of the AIM-120 missile is 366 cm, the diameter is 17.8 cm, and the length-to-diameter ratio is 1/20.6. For the X-101, these parameters are 745 cm, 74.2 cm, with a ratio of 1/10, and for the Kh-55, they are 588 cm, 51.4 cm, with a ratio of 1/11.4. In the screenshot from the video, it is clearly visible that even with the angle of the footage, the length of the missile exceeds its diameter by more than 15 times.

Indirect evidence includes the absence of the characteristic sound of Russian missile engines (the whistle in the second video is present but differs from that of a X-101) and the arrival of the projectile from the western direction.
