China has cornered the market in green energy transition technologies in recent years, and very effectively gained control of raw material supply chains so any other country has to go through them to get things done. There is one notable exception though. Sodium. It's so ubiquitous that even China can't monopolise it as a commodity. And that means European and US battery makers have spotted a chink in the Great Dragon's armour!

This strange looking turbine caught my attention as I was scrolling through the news. It is by a company called TouchWind and used a single large blade. Not only that, but it tilts up and down depending on the wind speeds. The idea is for it to be used in offshore settings, with some incredible plans for how it could work. They are aiming to significantly reduce the costs of off shore wind energy, and maybe one day to compete with onshore wind and solar energy. To get to the bottom of this turbine, I spoke with engineers at TouchWind, as well as industry experts.

SCAR is real & pilots need not apply

Odd title but I'll explain and also provide some background to my post, in episode 15 of season 2 of Battlestar Galactica there was a cyclon raider that was highly experienced and had many kills he was called SCAR he was feared by the colonial pilots.

What was the reason for his success, learning threw experience regardless of death in his only mission which is to kill colonial pilots, because in this fictional world SCARs soul would be placed into another cylon raider after his death by the cylon resurrection ship over and over again so that valuable experience would never be lost.

Now back to reality, the RAAF in conjunction with Boeing Australia are developing the MQ-28 Ghost Bat this UAV uses artificial intelligence to complete it's mission.

I would imagine artificial intelligence is key as it would allow the MQ-28 to learn from it's missions and improve on it's performance in each mission as it continuously learns, then each MQ-28 can learn from the missions of every other MQ-28 as their collective experiences are pooled and then uploaded to each MQ-28. As a result the MQ-28 would become very proficient in every possible mission assigned to it regardless of the adversary.

I think a vehicle like the MQ-28 would become almost unbeatable in combat.

Traditional fighter aircraft like F-35's will become obsolete overnight because of the human factor.

A human manned combat aircraft like the F-35 has to carry all the additional weight associated with the pilot, that is ejection seat, oxygen equipment, armoured cockpit tub, instrumentation and control mechanisms.

Beyond that the pilot can only take a maximum of about 9 to 10 G's of force on the body for short durations during manoeuvres.

Also the pilot cannot react as quickly as what an aircraft like the MQ-28 could. Lastly the MQ-28 could take as many G's as the aircraft is rated to which would be well beyond 9G's or so of an F-35. These two factors alone would mean a manned fighter aircraft will be outperformed by an MQ-28 in every senario.

This is plausible and the future of air combat, artificial intelligence has redefined aerial combat and made piloted aircraft obsolete.
