NASA Just Transmitted a Hip Hop Song by Missy Elliot to Venus

Hip-hop has officially been transmitted into deep space. Earlier this week, the popular 1997 song, “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)", by rapper Missy Elliot was transmitted from the DSN’s Goldstone complex to Venus, about 158 million miles (254 million kilometers) away.





The lyrics from Elliott’s hip-hop song “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” were beamed to the second planet from the Sun via NASA’s Deep Space Network in a transmission sent by the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California at 10:05 a.m. PDT on Friday, July 12.

So why is NASA broadcasting hip-hop into space? In recent years, the space agency has integrated pop culture and space exploration to attract the masses and make space digestible and reachable for everyone. Space exploration, in other words, is not just for astronauts and people who enjoy nerding out over planets and distant star systems; it’s for all of us. Branching out and reaching a larger audience showcases the diversity of our planet, which parallels the diversity of the universe and the many cosmic mysteries it holds. 

“Supa Dupa Fly” went supa dupa far, traveling 158 million miles (254 million kilometers) from Earth to Venus.

“Both space exploration and Missy Elliott’s art have been about pushing boundaries,” said Brittany Brown, director of the Digital and Technology Division, Office of Communications at NASA Headquarters in Washington, who initially pitched ideas to Missy’s team to collaborate with the agency. “Missy has a track record of infusing space-centric storytelling and futuristic visuals in her music videos, so the opportunity to collaborate on something out of this world is truly fitting.”

The DSN has transmitted only one other song into space, The Beatles “Across the Universe” in 2008. The recent transmission of Elliott’s song marks another groundbreaking moment.

A CONVERSATION BETWEEN SUNSPOTS

Sunspots do like to talk to one another. On Aug. 3rd, sunspot AR3775 produced a strong M7.3-class solar flare. An unnamed sunspot just behind the sun's eastern limb quickly responded with its own M5.4-class explosion.





These are called "sympathetic solar flares"--that is, pairs of explosions that occur almost simultaneously in widely-spaced active regions. Long ago, researchers assumed the eruptions were just coincidence, but a 2002 study proved otherwise. Some sunspots are linked by nearly-invisible magnetic loops in the sun's corona. Instabilities can rapidly travel from one to another, creating a chain reaction of explosions.

If AR3775 is indeed linked to the unseen sunspot, more twin flares may be in the offing as both turn toward Earth in the days ahead.

Once-in-a-lifetime Nova Explosion From T Coronae Borealis Will Create a 'New Star'

Astronomers and stargazers are eagerly awaiting the appearance of a "new" star, which will burst into view in the skies any night now.





The star, T Coronae Borealis (T CrB) or the "Blaze Star," is a nova that appears above our heads roughly every 80 years and will be visible with the naked eye, according to NASA. 

Situated roughly 3,000 light-years away in the Corona Borealis, or Northern Crown constellation, the nova is actually a pair of stars — an ancient red giant and an Earth-size white dwarf that is slowly stripping hydrogen from its companion. 

Once enough hydrogen accumulates on the white dwarf, the growing pressure and heat triggers a thermonuclear blast that is visible from Earth. Besides being a spectacular astronomical event, the explosion helps astronomers to glean insights into how stars behave.

Two previous eruptions from T CrB, in 1866 and 1946, are well-documented, and evidence suggests the nova may have also been observed in 1787 and 1217.

In 1217 Abbot Burchard, a German monk and leader of Ursberg Abbey, recorded a rare sight appearing in the Northern Crown in his chronicle of the year. "A wonderful sign was seen," Burchard wrote, which "shone with great light" over "many days."

In 1866 and 1946, observations of the star showed that it grew in brightness for around 10 years, dimmed slightly in a "pre-eruption dip" and then became visible from Earth for about a week.

The exact date and time of the star's eruption isn't known, but given the punctual schedule of its past explosions and the fact that it's already had its pre-eruption dip, astronomers expect it to appear before September.

Couple Spot UFO Hovering Above River Like 'Sci-Fi Movie'

A stunned dad felt like 'he was in a sci-fi movie' after capturing footage of UFOs 'as bright as the sun' silently hovering in the night sky. Justin Stevenson was driving through Fort Alexander, Canada, with wife Danielle Daniels-Stevenson last month [May 14] when they spotted bright lights above the Winnipeg River. The 49-year-old pulled over at a clearing where Danielle, 32, filmed two 'sun-like' balls of light floating above the treeline without making a sound.

'A King Will Die': 4,000-year-old Lunar Eclipse Omen Tablets Deciphered





Tablets added to the British Museum's collection many decades ago have finally been deciphered.





Scholars have finally deciphered 4,000-year-old cuneiform tablets found more than 100 years ago in what is now Iraq. The tablets describe how some lunar eclipses are omens of death, destruction and pestilence.

The four clay tablets "represent the oldest examples of compendia of lunar-eclipse omens yet discovered" Andrew George, an emeritus professor of Babylonian at the University of London, and Junko Taniguchi, an independent researcher, wrote in a paper published recently in the Journal of Cuneiform Studies. (Lunar eclipses occur when the moon falls into Earth's shadow.)

The authors of the tablets used the time of night, movement of shadows and the date and duration of eclipses to predict omens.

It's possible that ancient astrologers used past experiences to help determine what omens the eclipses portended. In Babylonia and other parts of Mesopotamia, there was a strong belief that celestial events could predict the future.





People believed that "events in the sky were coded signs placed there by the gods as warnings about the future prospects of those on earth," George and Taniguchi wrote in the article. "Those who advised the king kept watch on the night sky and would match their observations with the academic corpus of celestial-omen texts."

Kings in ancient Mesopotamia didn't rely on those eclipse omens alone to predict what was coming.





"If the prediction associated with a given omen was threatening, for example, 'a king will die,' then an oracular enquiry by extispicy [inspecting the entrails of animals] was conducted to determine whether the king was in real danger," George and Taniguchi wrote.

If the animal entrails suggested that there was danger, people believed they could perform certain rituals that could annul the bad omen, thereby countering the forces of evil that lay behind it. So even if the omens were bad, people still believed that the forecasted future could be avoided.
