🛰 THE PARKER SOLAR PROBE IS GEARING UP TO SET A NEW RECORD

According to NASA, the spacecraft will reach its closest point to the Sun, known as perihelion, on Tuesday, coming within just 6.1 million kilometers of the star—nearly 10 times closer than Mercury.

Since its launch in 2018, Parker has repeatedly broken records, inching closer to the Sun with each orbit. It remains the only human-made object to venture this close to our star.

The next signal from the probe is expected on December 27, confirming whether it has successfully endured the extreme heat.

Ooooooo I have a bad feeling about this. I don't think AI is going to be pleased about humans sending its little baby into the scorching hell of the sun.

Passenger Subhonkul Rakhimov claims that the pilots tried to land the plane in Grozny three times, but there was heavy fog.

Rakhimov added that he reached for a life jacket, and there was a hole in it, RT reports: "I took the vest, I looked: there was a hole in the vest - a fragment had pierced it. After this explosion, just between my legs - somewhere there - this fragment flew in and hit."

Finland boards and seizes likely Russian ‘shadow fleet’ tanker suspected of damaging power cable in Baltic Sea

The Estlink 2 undersea power cable, which runs through the Baltic Sea between Estonia and Finland, malfunctioned and went offline on Wednesday afternoon, December 25. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo says the outage will not impact public access to electricity.

Finland’s national electricity transmission grid operator is investigating the incident and has not ruled out an act of vandalism. On Thursday, spokespeople for Estonia’s national transmission system operator said that diagnostics and measurements are underway to identify the damaged area of the undersea power cable.

Reuters reported that Finnish authorities “boarded and took control of an oil tanker traveling from Russia,” believing its anchor may have damaged the power cable. Finnish officials say the tanker, registered in the Cook Islands, likely belongs to Russia’s “shadow fleet,” a group of ships used to evade sanctions on the sale of Russian oil.

Officials investigating the damaged power line are also reportedly reviewing the potential involvement of a Hong Kong-flagged container ship that came near the Estlink 2 when it went offline.

Finland and Estonia jointly own the Estlink 1 and Estlink 2 power cables. Estlink 2 has an energy transmission capacity of 658 megawatts, while Estlink 1 (which is still operating normally) has a capacity of 350 megawatts. The total length of Estlink 2 is 170 kilometers (106 miles), including 145 kilometers (90 miles) on the seabed. The Estlink 2 also malfunctioned in January 2024 and came back online only in September after lengthy repairs.

Bilderberg Group changes itself for the modern world – and return of Trump

The former head of Nato, Jens Stoltenberg, has been named the new co-chair of the influential Bilderberg Group, which convenes a yearly transatlantic policy conference and has long been the subject of conspiracy theories around the extent of its power to shape global events.

After a turbulent decade at the helm of the alliance’s military, Stoltenberg now takes over at its pre-eminent discussion forum: a fiercely private four-day event frequented by prime minsters, EU commissioners, bank bosses, corporate CEOs and intelligence chiefs.

Stoltenberg’s first Bilderberg was back in 2002, a few years before his second tenure as Norway’s prime minister. His decade as secretary general of Nato saw further visits, and he even gave the keynote speech at the group’s Saturday night banquet in Turin in 2018. His appointment as Bilderberg’s co-chair cements the group’s role at the heart of transatlantic strategy.

In February, Stoltenberg will also take over as chair of the Munich Security Conference, another important defence and diplomacy symposium. With a fellow Bilderberg veteran, the former Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte, replacing Stoltenberg at Nato, it marks a concentration of control at the top of the Atlantic alliance at a critical time.

Stoltenberg’s tenure at Nato was dominated by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which had begun in earnest not long before he took office in 2014. Stoltenberg oversaw what he recently described as “the largest reinforcement of our collective defence in a generation”, noting proudly that “defence spending is on an upward trajectory across the alliance”.

A number of his new colleagues at Bilderberg have been benefiting from this uptick.

Several of the group’s 31-member steering committee have senior roles in the defence industry. The billionaire former Google boss, Eric Schmidt, chaired the recent National Security Commission on AI, and is now busy launching a kamikaze drone company aimed at the lucrative Ukraine market. Meanwhile, the hugely wealthy Swedish industrialist Marcus Wallenberg is chair of defense manufacturer Saab, which enjoyed a 71% boost in orders in the first nine months of 2024, largely due to the war with Russia.

The tech luminary and Donald Trump insider Peter Thiel founded the fast-growing robotics company Anduril and the booming surveillance and AI giant Palantir. His loyal lieutenant Alex Karp, the CEO of Palantir, was voted on to the board of Bilderberg a few years ago. Karp, who claims his company is “responsible for most of the targeting in Ukraine”, recently told the New York Times that the US will “very likely” soon be fighting a three-front war with China, Russia and Iran.

In some respects, the geopolitical mood today is not so different from how it was in the 1950s, when Bilderberg was born.

Top of the agenda at the first meeting in 1954 was “the attitude towards communism and the Soviet Union”, with the “strictly confidential” conference report referring repeatedly to “the communist threat”. Seventy years later, at the most recent summit in Madrid, the primary threat is “Russia”, which sat grimly at the foot of the conference agenda underneath “Ukraine and the world”, and “the future of warfare”.

In 1954, the alliance was facing “the emergence ofcommunist imperialism”. In 2024, it’s up against what Stoltenberg calls “the emerging axis of autocrats”, headed by Russia, China and North Korea.

Stoltenberg and his successor as secretary general, Rutte, were both at this summer’s Madrid meeting. Joining them in the conference hall were a clutch of high-up Pentagon officials and Nato’s second most senior military leader, US general Chris Cavoli, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe. It was Cavoli’s second conference, and he’s not the first Saceur to attend the talks: they’ve been coming along to strategise since the mid-60s.

Bilderberg has always had close links with the military: its founders included senior members of British and American intelligence, and a previous Nato leader, Lord Carrington, chaired the group from 1990 to 1998.

Even the shamefaced resignation of its founding chair, Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, had a military twist: he was caught up in the Lockheed bribery scandal of 1976, the only year (pre-Covid) that the conference was cancelled. And it’s telling that arguably the most dominant figure at Bilderberg in the last several decades was the grand strategist and warmonger, Henry Kissinger, who was lauded as a foreign policy genius by some and despised as a mass-murdering war criminal by others.

Bilderberg thrives on discreet diplomacy, elite networking and intelligence: a former chief of MI6, Sir John Sawers, is a member of the group’s steering committee and the current head of the CIA, William Burns, was a member before quietly resigning when he took office.

But the arrival of Stoltenberg might signal a sea change: it’s a big-name appointment and follows the recent election of the high-profile CNN interviewer Fareed Zakaria to the group’s steering committee, perhaps signalling a shift out of the shadows for the publicity-shy group.

Bilderberg hasn’t held a press conference for decades, but the urbane politician Stoltenberg is far more used to media briefings and Q&As than the man he replaces: the Dutch economist and Goldman Sachs adviser Victor Halberstadt, who died in September.

In fact, Stoltenberg has already made a statement to the press about his new role, telling the Norwegian newspaper Dagens Näringsliv that Bilderberg, “together with the Munich Security Conference … is a good platform for cooperation between leaders in the political arena, business and the academic world”.

If Stoltenberg is hoping to steer Bilderberg towards a little more engagement with the press, he might hope to get a helping hand from his co-chair, Marie-Josée Kravis, who sits on the board of Publicis, one of the world’s largest PR and communications companies.

However, it’s quite possible that Kravis herself will step aside fairly soon: she’s been assiduously attending Bilderbergs since the late 80s. The younger generation of billionaires in the inner circle, particularly the Silicon Valley crowd, tend to be more at ease chatting into a microphone, while others on the group’s governing body, like the politician Stacey Abrams and the Starbucks board member Mellody Hobson, are accomplished public speakers.

It will have to wait until Stoltenberg’s first conference as Bilderberg co-chair to find out if he’s shaking up the group’s publicity policy. This will, appropriately enough, be in Sweden. While at Nato, Stoltenberg welcomed four new members to the alliance: and Sweden was the most recent.

The chief negotiator for Sweden’s accession to Nato, Oscar Stenström, was spotted hovering around the fringes of this year’s Bilderberg conference in Madrid: he is helping to organise next year’s summit in Stockholm on behalf of his new boss, the billionaire Wallenberg. The Wallenberg family conveniently own the venue: the magnificent Grand hotel, which will be cordoned off in mid-June for the event.

What we know for sure is that Stoltenberg in his new role will be laser-focused, like one of Schmidt’s kamikaze drones, on strengthening transatlantic ties – which may not be entirely straightforward with Trump back in the White House and US foreign policy shaped by the “America first” agenda.

Writing in the Financial Times last month, Stoltenberg noted that Trump’s “campaign rhetoric had raised legitimate concerns about his commitment to European security”. That said, Stoltenberg knows that however tricky things get with Trump, he’s got a hotline to the White House through Peter Thiel: the incoming vice-president, JD Vance, used to work for Thiel at Mithril Capital, and a healthy handful of Thiel’s tech network are lined up for senior posts in the second Trump administration.

But that’s the thing with the studiously bipartisan Bilderberg: they’ve always got someone on the inside, whoever wins.

For example, Karp, Thiel’s CEO at Palantir, was a big backer of Kamala Harris. Looking down the steering committee, Nadia Schadlow is Trump’s former deputy national security adviser, while Abrams is a high-profile Democratic politician and activist. Stoltenberg’s op-ed in the Financial Times last month stressed the bipartisan nature of the transatlantic alliance: “Support for and pride in the most powerful military alliance the world has ever seen remains strong across the political spectrum.”

The former Nato chief was carefully welcoming of Trump 2.0. His strategy? Simply that “we need to invest more in defence” in order to “remind the incoming administration that, far from being a burden, the transatlantic relationship is a key strategic asset in this era of great-power competition”.

So all of the high finance high rollers who get invited to Stoltenberg’s Bilderberg can expect to get the hard sell on military and defence investment. Default Re: BREAKING NEWS ~ Continuously Updated

This might be worth keeping an eye on and it may well be, unfortunately, worthy of its own thread. Two days ago only 6 people were infected and today that number has gone to 65+

Bird flu samples show mutations that may make it easier to spread to people, CDC reports

Genetic analysis suggests the H5N1 virus has the capacity to mutate in ways that could make it more transmissible to humans.

H5N1 bird flu samples collected from a severely ill patient in Louisiana show signs of mutations that may make the virus more transmissible to humans, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday.

The unidentified patient, who was hospitalized with serious respiratory symptoms, is believed to have contracted bird flu from exposure to sick and dead birds in a backyard flock. The patient has not been identified but is reportedly over 65 with underlying health problems and is the second person in the United States who has been hospitalized with the virus. The Louisiana patient was infected with a strain of the virus different from the one affecting dairy cows and causing sporadic cases in farmworkers in the U.S.

Genetic analysis of two samples collected from the Louisiana patient suggest that the virus may have the ability to attach to cells in the human upper airway.

That’s worrisome, experts say, because bird flu viruses like H5N1 typically attach to cell receptors found in birds and other animals, but not commonly in humans. This is why bird flu typically doesn’t infect humans or spread person to person. One of the mutations was also seen in a sample from a British Columbia teenager who was hospitalized with bird flu, the CDC said.

While the findings show that the virus has the capacity to mutate in ways that could make it more transmissible to humans, experts stopped short of suggesting it's on the verge of a pandemic.

“There’s no evidence that there’s been spread from this person to others, and that’s a good thing,” said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious diseases expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. “It clearly means that we have to keep our attention on this, and if anything, ratchet it up even more.”

Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccine and infectious disease expert at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said there’s no evidence the mutations were “functional,” meaning the virus could actually attach to the upper airway and replicate and spread to others.

“I think if there were clear and definitive evidence that the virus has mutated to the point that it can bind to the binding receptors in the upper respiratory tract, meaning the lining of the nose, the lining of the throat, the lining of the windpipe and therefore reproduce itself in the upper respiratory tract, that would be worrisome,” Offit said. “But that’s not what the report said.”

In the report, the CDC said the detection “underscores the importance of ongoing genomic surveillance in people and animals, containment of avian influenza A(H5) outbreaks in dairy cattle and poultry, and prevention measures among people with exposure to infected animals or environments.”

The agency said that the risk to the general public hasn’t changed and remains low.

As of Friday, 65 confirmed human cases of H5N1 have been reported in the U.S., with the majority linked to exposure to infected poultry or dairy cows, according to the CDC. That number is likely an underestimate, however, as a CDC report published in November found evidence of asymptomatic bird flu infections in farmworkers. There is no evidence of person-to-person spread associated with any of the cases.

The Louisiana patient was infected with a strain called D1.1, which is closely related to other viruses recently detected in wild birds and poultry in the U.S. and in recent human cases in British Columbia, Canada and Washington state.

The CDC said its analysis found no changes associated with markers that would mean antivirals, such as Tamflu, wouldn’t work against the virus. That’s one of the agency’s criteria for deploying a bird flu vaccine.

Angela Rasmussen, a virologist who specializes in emerging infectious diseases, noted on the social media platform X that the mutations identified in the patient weren’t present in samples from birds, indicating the changes developed within the patient after infection and aren’t circulating in wildlife.

She said that’s “good news” because “it reduces risk of transmission to another person and suggests ‘human-adapted’ viruses aren’t emerging in birds.”

Still, “the H5N1 situation remains grim” as human cases continue to rise, Rasmussen posted.

“We don’t know what combination of mutations would lead to a pandemic H5N1 virus and there’s only so much we can predict from these sequence data,” she said. “But the more humans are infected, the more chances a pandemic virus will emerge.”

At least 28 dead in South Korea plane crash - reports
    George Wright
    BBC News

An aircraft carrying 181 people has crashed at an airport in South Korea, killing at least 28 people, the Yonhap news agency reports.

The aircraft veered off a runway and crashed into a wall at Muan International Airport in the south west of the country, the South Korean news agency reports.

The Jeju Air plane, which was carrying 175 passengers and six flight attendants, was reportedly flying back from Bangkok in Thailand and the accident took place while it was landing.

Two people were found alive and rescue operations were still under way, a fire official told the Reuters news agency.

Emergency services were attempting to rescue people in the tail section of the aircraft, an airport official said.

The cause of the crash is unclear but a bird strike may have caused the landing gear to malfunction, Yonhap reports.

Unverified footage uploaded to social media shows the aircraft skidding off the runway and crashing into a wall, before part of it bursts into flames. Other footage shows a large plume of black smoke rising into the sky.

This breaking news story is being updated and more details will be published shortly. Please refresh the page for the fullest version.
The plane involved was a Boeing 737-8AS; flight number: 7C2216.

Dramatic Video shows Azerbaijan Airlines Passenger Jet Crash in Kazakhstan

It looks as if it was shot at. A developing story.
Here's Simplicius' breakdown based on what we think we know so far. Call me suspicious but this could so so very easily have been a NATO/Ukrainian sponsored 'provocation'. That doesn't mean that mistakes don't happen, it may well have been a mistake by the Russians, but let's not jump the gun. Given the SBU (Ukrainian intelligence services) have bribed goodness only knows who on many occasions to commit atrocities it wouldn't be beyond SIS/CIA/Mossad (even) to create such an event, and given the red-arrow map below, pin something on Georgia as a part of the ongoing Gladio-style coup makeover attempts going on there. Simplicius seems to agree with me on some points here. Anyway, for now:

    ---
Several people have requested updates on the Azerbaijani flight situation, as well as the sinking of Russian Ursa Major ship. I wanted to wait until there was more information, but the topic fits the general theme of today’s report so let us discuss:

As far as the Aktau flight crash, today Putin reportedly ‘apologized’ to Aliyev for Russia’s involvement but both leaders appear to be skirting any direct declarations as to what happened. Both leaders’ statements referred to some ‘external events’ and seemed to have an agreement to not explicitly blame the crash on a shoot down. This could be for political reasons or it may simply be honest caution in not wanting to jump to conclusions as investigations proceed, since no official conclusion has been reached by relevant authorities.

However, it’s difficult to believe any ‘investigation’ is necessary given that if a Russian AD missile shot down the plane, Russia would likely have that data immediately available from the military, unless someone in the air defense battalion command has subsequently covered it up.

On first impression, it seems obvious the plane was in fact shot down by an errant missile. However, we must consider that the official flight log of the neutral Kazakh pilots does mention a ‘bird strike’, though at the moment we have no way of verifying if these transcripts are 100% real:

You could argue the pilots can make a mistake by assuming a blown engine is a ‘bird strike’ if nothing else was visible or obvious to them, however they specifically mention the cockpit being hit, which is strange; that would imply they watched birds actually hit the cockpit glass. The weather is claimed to have been foggy, so we could also hypothetically argue “something” hit the cockpit and they merely assumed it was birds—it’s difficult to know for sure.

For all we know, they were hit by one of the Ukrainian drones, which could have resembled a bird through the fog as they ran right into it—though admittedly that’s less likely.

Also, it’s interesting that the side of the plane with the shrapnel is the left side:

Notice this damaged flap track fairing is on the left wing from the photo taken by a passenger:

Since the plane was headed in a northerly direction when it was hit, the expected ‘missile’ would have come from the west, i.e. left—which is consistent with the shrapnel damage. This is consistent with videos from inside the cabin that appear to show shrapnel holes on the seats and overhead on the left side.

Red arrow showing potential missile direction:

But if a Russian missile did shoot down the plane as some claim, how could that be possible, some might ask? Well, for one there is no IFF (Identity Friend Foe) between AD systems and airliners. Airliners should simply not be anywhere near active combat zones. But modern AD systems are of course designed to differentiate between different objects based on their radar signature, flight characteristics, such as speed, altitude, etc. Unfortunately, a descending airliner ready to land could actually look a lot like a drone given that its airspeed and low altitude would precisely mimic one of these Ukrainian OWA-UAS which fly at the exact same speed and altitude as an airliner approaching a runway. This is particularly the case given that apparently heavy Russian GPS jamming was ongoing at the time, which may have seriously affected everyone’s signals including Russian AD, given that coordinating such things is often not as smooth as one would like.

Recall that modern radar systems may not be as discerning as you might think. For instance, days ago we found out from US military-connected sources that the US’ shoot down of its own F/A-18 Super Hornet was “far worse than we thought”, for two reasons:

The USS Gettysburg which shot down the Hornet had just gone through an extensive $200 million upgrade which vastly updated its AEGIS system, radars, etc., to the most modern and advanced standards. In fact, it was the first Ticonderoga class cruiser to successfully complete the Navy’s major SLEP (Service Life Extension Program) upgrade program.

On top of that, it turns out that the Gettysburg almost shot down a second Hornet, which just dodged the missile at the last second.

So: one of the US Navy’s most advanced ships which was just upgraded for nearly a quarter of a billion dollars was not able to discern its own incoming jets, especially given the presence of IFF, and tried to shoot two of them down in a row? It’s clear to see that modern radar discrimination is not as “perfect” as people think, no matter the country.

The presence of fog would have further complicated the situation near Grozny given claims that a Pantsir system was used, which also relies on electro-optical visual tracking of targets as redundancy to radar.

However, my one point of skepticism is that the airplane seems to have suffered very light shrapnel damage which is not consistent with a modern missile striking it. You see, a giant airliner is the easiest target in the world for any modern AD system where the chance of the missile striking a more “glancing” blow is very low. Such a ‘fat, slow target’ would be hit much more directly and completely shot down, with consequent fragment dispersion showing far more serious penetration rather than a light scattering which leaves the plane to continue flying hundreds of kilometers. But in this case, the shrapnel damage is so light, and the plane made it so far—across the entire Caspian Sea—that I’m left extremely skeptical that a missile was targeted directly at the plane. The type of damage seems more consistent with something exploding nearby but which was not directly targeted at the plane. The only scenario which fits the above explanation? A drone may have been shot down “near” the plane and the explosion from both the drone’s own fragmentation warhead plus the missile may have sprayed the plane that happened to be flying by, but just glancingly so.

The other thing to recall: I have reported before that Ukrainian SBU now regularly sends up smaller drones in the path of Russian planes precisely to cause AD systems to engage the target and hopefully hit the planes instead. This was reportedly done during the Il-76 and/or A-50 AWACS shoot downs. It is carried out by some operative on the ground who can anonymously fly a small Mavik style UAV or even FPV drone directly in the plane’s path in order to ‘bait’ the AD.

So, my personal assessment for now in the absence of new information is that it’s likely a Russian AD missile may have had something to do with it, but still feels wrong that it was a directly targeted hit—there appears more to the story. But there’s still also the chance it was an outright Ukrainian provocation in the form of a terrorist attack made to look like a Russian shoot down.

The right spot in the video to start listening is at 22 mins 30 secs

At this moment anyway (sample size of one), a couple of days after your post, Brighteon is "currently offline", as reported by their hosting service, Cloudflare
The audio version via podbay is still working. I generally assume the streams at podbay are coming from the creator's servers so, in this case, if I'm correct, the server at Brighteon is still working.

This link starts at the start of the conversation with Steve. If you listen for just 10 minutes you'll hear the 'important' part.

This footage has emerged of the actual impact. 177 thought to be dead. Horrifying.
