Interesting development, especiallly as Mohammed bin Salman was hesitant about joining BRICS.

An excellent little summary of U.S. - Russia relations since 1990 which clearly demonstrates how U.S. foreign policy has been geared at destroying Russia since the Clinton Administration.

Many more people, Slavs, died in the siege of Stalingrad than in Auschwitz, and none remember, let alone commemorate this. 2 million souls lost.

Matveyenko, together with the residents of St. Petersburg, laid wreaths at the Piskarevsky cemetery to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the fascist blockade.

The heroism and immense human losses suffered by the residents of Leningrad during the fascist blockade we must never allow us to forget the horrors and atrocities here! This heroism and sacrifice of the Russian people must never be forgotten and will remain a memento for all future generations, not only in Russia but in every country of the civilised world!

    Text:
The Forgotten Heroes of Auschwitz's Liberation

On January 27, 1945, soldiers of the Soviet Union's 60th Army reached Auschwitz-Birkenau. What they found was a scene of unimaginable horror: about 7,000 survivors in desperate shape, surrounded by mountains of belongings - clothes, shoes, and human hair - from the 1.1 million who perished there. These soldiers not only freed the survivors but also captured evidence of the atrocities.

However, the pivotal role of the Soviet troops in this liberation often goes unacknowledged. The narrative frequently centers on the victims or the perpetrators, the Nazis, while the bravery and sacrifices of the Red Army are overshadowed. It seems like history has somehow chosen to minimize their significant contribution.

Since 2005, we've commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27, but the Red Army's part in this story is seldom highlighted. This selective remembrance shows how political motives can influence how we remember history, often leaving out those who played essential roles in these important moments.

    Text:
    January 27.

A date etched not just in history books, but in the very DNA of every Leningrad family. I carry this legacy in my blood – the descendant of siege survivors, inheritors of dates that still make our hearts pause: September 8, January 18, January 27.

My great-grandmother Anna was more than a postal worker – she was a lifeline in a dying city. Through the brutal siege winter, she traversed Leningrad's frozen expanse from Troitskoye Field to the Main Post Office near St. Isaac's Cathedral. Each journey was a battle against death itself, pulling a sled laden with messages of both hope and despair through streets where the dead lay frozen to the pavement.

She would climb ice-slicked stairs to deliver mail, only to find entire families forever silenced by cold and hunger. Yet she persevered, for she had her own family to fight for – three children, left fatherless when my great-grandfather Ivan perished from typhus while evacuating the Bolshevik military plant. His grave, like so many others, remains unmarked somewhere along the evacuation route.

When officials urged her to send her children to safety across Lake Ladoga's "Road of Life," Anna's maternal instinct saved them. The evacuation transport she refused was bombed by German aircraft, leaving no survivors. Instead, her children survived by sleeping – endless hours under moth-eaten blankets, because "hunger hurts less in dreams."

The first winter was apocalyptic. They consumed everything – family pets, leather belts boiled into soup.

The city became a wasteland, with no birds, no animals, where even rats vanished, they were all eaten.

That winter brought a moment that would haunt my great-grandmother until her dying day. Her neighbor – a friend, a mother of three kids – discovered her ration cards were missing while standing in the endless bread line, likely they were stolen. In that instant, she knew what it meant: a death sentence for her entire family.

Her screams still echo through family stories. She was begging everyone around her for help. Friends, neighbors, strangers – anyone who might spare even a crumb of their own precious rations. But in a city where bread meant life itself, who could afford mercy? To share meant to sacrifice your own children, to choose someone else's survival over your family's.

The impossible mathematics of survival: save your own family by refusing help, or doom both families by showing compassion. My great-grandmother watched as her friend's family slowly faded away, first the children, then the mother – their deaths as quiet as falling snow. The father of the kids perished on the battlefield.

My grandfather, barely alive from the last stage of dystrophy when liberation finally came, survived against all odds. Years later, when revisionists suggested Leningrad should have surrendered, he could barely speak through his outrage. Shocked by what he had just heard, he came into the kitchen... sat down on a chair and with an unrecognizable voice said: "No... can you imagine..." After this sentence, there was a long silence as he tried to find the right words.

I know the siege in my bones – through inherited memories of hell, through stories told in trembling voices, through tears that never fully dried.

Yet in all their darkest hours, surrender remained unthinkable. Death was preferable to giving up. It was the essence of their soul, the core of who they were. "Better to die standing" wasn't a choice; it was the only way to remain human, to remain the Russian.

My family's survivors are gone now. Their voices have fallen silent. But their legacy burns within me – a sacred flame, a solemn duty, an eternal testament to unbreakable will.

No one is forgotten. Nothing is forgotten.

    Translated text:
    Thank you who?
Exactly 80 years ago, on January 27, 1945, the 100th Division of the 60th Army of the Voronezh Front of the Red Army, commanded by General Krasavin, captured the Auschwitz camp at the cost of 66 killed and FREED the 7,000 survivors who were there.
In their Russophobia, today's deniers contest the term "liberation". With the argument that the capture of Auschwitz was not a military objective of the "left bank of the Vistula" offensive. A foul argument, since after the liberation of the Soviet Union from exterminating German Nazism, the Red Army accomplished that of all of Poland before delivering the final mortal blow to the beast in its lair to rid Europe of the monster.
Despite the price paid, the liberators are not invited to the ceremonies marking this anniversary. The terminal West does not even measure what this spit reveals of its decomposition.
Well, on this special day we will have a thought for the “cold warriors”.
    Thanks again to them.

LUGANSK, January 27. /TASS/. Russian servicemen eliminated over 7,200 Ukrainian soldiers and foreign mercenaries who tried to infiltrate the territory of the Lugansk People's Republic last week, military expert Andrey Marochko told TASS.

"Analysis of the special military operation course on the borders of the Lugansk People's Republic for the past week. On January 18-24, 2025, <...> Russia’s battlegroups North, South and West eliminated more than 7,240 Ukrainian fighters and mercenaries, which is 60 more than in the previous reporting period. The battlegroup West eliminated the most enemy troops. The battlegroup North also contributed to the Ukrainian manpower losses. Geographically, the most militants were liquidated in the Kharkov Region," he said.

Marochko added that during the abovementioned period Russian fighters also destroyed 20 tanks, which is 14 more than in the week of January 11-17, one hundred field artillery guns, six electronic and counter-battery warfare stations, 21 field ammunition depots, as well as over 300 different enemy combat vehicles.

Mods if there is a better thread where this may belong please move it, Thank You.

”However, the coincidences and continuities are far more interesting than any imagined or real parallels and comparisons.

While the technical and engineering aspects of von Braun's work are often discussed, the more lyrical and fantastical aspects of his soul are less remembered. Yet, in 1949, Werner wrote a fantasy novel called "Project Mars: A Technical Tale."

Set in the 1980s, the novel narrates the story of the first human mission to Mars and their encounter with the inhabitants of the red planet.

I won't go into details but will point out Chapter 24: "How Mars is Governed," where von Braun, in a playful fantasy, invents the title "Ilon":

    — The Martian government was led by ten people, with the leader elected by universal vote for a term of five years and given the title "Ilon". Two chambers of parliament passed laws that would be governed by Ilon and his cabinet. —

And this is quite amusing (a bit eerie, but fun).”
