Is every mind connected to form a peer to peer network that creates the illusion of a shared reality, making the appearance of material reality a simulation created through shared beliefs?

Pope Francis, 88, admitted to hospital in Rome

Pope Francis has been admitted to the hospital for medical examinations and to treat bronchitis, the Vatican announced.

Since being diagnosed with bronchitis last Thursday, the 88-year-old has continued his activities and audiences indoors at Casa Santa Marta, the Vatican residence where he lives, with a public appearance on Sunday.

He has however handed off his speeches for an aide to read aloud, saying he was having trouble breathing.

Francis, who had part of one lung removed as a young man, has long battled health problems, especially long bouts of acute bronchitis in winter.

He uses a wheelchair, walker or cane when moving around his apartment and recently fell twice, hurting his arm and chin.

Ever since his diagnosis, Francis has appeared bloated, an indication the medication he was taking to treat the lung infection was making him retain water.

Francis is being taken to Rome’s Gemelli hospital, where he was last admitted in June 2023 to have surgery to remove intestinal scar tissue and repair a hernia in the abdominal wall.

A few months before that, he spent three days in the hospital to receive intravenous antibiotics for a respiratory infection.

A Vatican statement said Francis would be admitted at the end of his Friday audiences.

In 2023, he was admitted to the hospital for breathing difficulties and joked ‘I’m still alive’ after he was discharged.

He also took time to baptise newborn babies in the hospital in 2023.

Pope Francis’ condition in hospital worsens

VATICAN CITY (LifeSiteNews) — Pope Francis’ medical condition has worsened, the Holy See announced Monday lunch-time, with his respiratory tract infection needing increased treatment and a lengthened stay in hospital.

Around 1pm Rome time on Monday, the Vatican announced a deterioration in Pope Francis’ condition. The Pope has been in hospital in Rome since Friday morning, where he was taken to receive treatment for ongoing bronchitis.

    The new statement reads:

The results of the investigations carried out in the past few days and today demonstrated a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection that resulted in further modification of therapy. All the investigations carried out to date are indicative of a complex clinical picture that will require appropriate hospital stay.

He had been admitted to hospital with a fever, though the Holy See press office told journalists Saturday evening that the fever had apparently subsided, and medical personnel reportedly stated that he was showing “improvement in some values.”

His audiences had been cancelled up until today, but with the latest news of his worsening health, the length of his hospitalization remains unclear. His weekly general audience on Wednesday has now been cancelled.

Details about the Pope’s health have been sparse since he was admitted, with statements suggesting his condition was improving.

    Hospitalization shrouded in mystery

A brief, and somewhat nondescript, update on Francis’ medical condition has been issued in the early evening each day since Francis was taken to hospital. They have read broadly the same, namely that the Pope was resting, reading and receiving Holy Communion while medical tests continued.

His condition, the press office said, was “improving” – Saturday night – and then “stationary” – Sunday night.

The very brief statements left much unsaid about the likely true nature of Francis’ condition: a practice which is not out of the ordinary when the Vatican issues comments about the health of a pontiff.

But Monday’s statement seems to be much more in line with the reality of Francis’ health.

Indeed, by the time he was taken to hospital Friday, he had already been suffering with bronchitis for around two weeks. This had led him to abandon a number of speeches after he had started them, along with handing out the texts of prepared speeches to those in his private audiences instead of attempting to read.

The very fact that he was taken to hospital reveals that his condition had deteriorated past the ability of his in-house doctor and medical staff who attend him daily. Thus the hospitalization was in itself an indication of the seriousness of his condition. For it to be described by the press office as “fair” and “stationary” seemed somewhat disingenuous.

Reports have also suggested that the high doses of medication which he has been on recently, due to his breathing issues, have failed and resulted in his very obvious water retention and bloating. On Sunday, Il Messaggero’s respected Vaticanista Franca Giansoldati cited a source saying that “he had all his values out of whack.”

Monday lunch-time’s statement about Francis needing an “appropriate” amount of time is sufficiently vague to be applied to any time-period, and hints at a more serious clinical diagnosis than that which has been made public.

At the moment, Francis’ normally weekly general audience has been cancelled for this Wednesday and all papal events removed from his calendar. He is due to officiate at Jubilee celebrations for deacons on Sunday February 23 in St. Peter’s Square. This, now, appears increasingly unlikely.

Francis’ health has already been in notable decline in recent years with his mobility noticeably much more limited in recent weeks. While he has had to use a wheelchair and a cane for some years, his inability to walk freely without assistance has been especially highlighted this winter.

In recent months he has had two publicly acknowledged falls. At the December 7 consistory to create cardinals, Francis appeared with a very visible bruise on his chin. The mark was explained by the press office as being due to a minor fall that the Pope had on the previous morning, when he hit his chin on his bedside table.

Then, in mid-January, the Pope had another fall which this time led to his using a sling on his right arm for a few days.

Already missing a large part of one lung as a result of illness in his early 20s, the Pontiff has always been particularly susceptible to winter colds affecting his breathing capability.

Prior to Friday’s admission, he underwent brief “diagnostic tests” in February 2024 but had not officially stayed at hospital since summer 2023.

In 2023 Francis underwent two significant hospitalizations, the first of which was described as “scheduled” but which Francis later described as being an emergency, having arrived at the hospital “unconscious.” In June 2023 he underwent surgery for an “incarcerated incisional hernia,” which the Holy See Press Office described as a necessary procedure, but not an emergency.

Prior to that in summer of 2021, the Pope also had a 10-day stay in hospital, after he had to undergo a six-hour surgery at the Gemelli to have part of his colon removed due to diverticulitis.

Speaking to La Croix on Friday, sources close to the Pope said that Francis was “not in good shape,” an observation which appears readily ascertainable for those with an observational eye.

With the press acutely watching every word the Holy See press office issues about the Pope’s health, information about Francis’ condition will be closely analyzed.

Meanwhile the Diocese of Rome and bishops around the world have encouraged faithful to pray for the Pope during his time in hospital.

BREAKING: Pope Francis has double pneumonia, Vatican announces

VATICAN CITY (LifeSiteNews) — Pope Francis has double pneumonia requiring “complex” medical care in the hospital, the Holy See Press Office announced this evening.

In a statement issued to the Vatican press corps around 7:30 pm tonight, the press office director stated that Francis’ health situation had deteriorated once again, following his Friday admission to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital:

The laboratory tests, chest X-ray and clinical conditions of the Holy Father continue to present a complex picture.

The polymicrobial infection, which arose in a context of bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis, and which required the use of cortisone and antibiotic therapy, makes the therapeutic treatment more complex.

The chest CAT scan that the Holy Father underwent this afternoon, prescribed by the Vatican health team and the medical team of the “A. Gemelli” Polyclinic Foundation, showed the onset of bilateral pneumonia that required further drug therapy.

Nevertheless, Pope Francis is in a good mood.

This morning he received the Eucharist and, during the day, he alternated rest with prayer and reading texts. He is grateful for the closeness he feels at this moment and asks, with gratitude, that people continue to pray for him.

Already missing a large part of one lung as a result of illness in his early 20s, Francis has always been particularly susceptible to winter colds affecting his breathing capability.

Francis had been admitted to hospital Friday with a fever and with bronchitis, though the Holy See Press Office told journalists Saturday evening that the fever had apparently subsided, and medical personnel reportedly stated that he was showing “improvement in some values.”

On Sunday evening his condition was declared “stationary,” but then on Monday the press office announced it had worsened, and that “all the investigations carried out to date are indicative of a complex clinical picture that will require appropriate hospital stay.”

Earlier today, his audiences were again cancelled, this time up to the end of Sunday, February 23.

Should he remain in hospital until then, then it would indeed be the longest hospitalization of his pontificate. He was in hospital for less than five days in the spring of 2023 and then in June 2023 for 9 days. During the latter occasion, he underwent surgery for an “incarcerated incisional hernia,” which the Holy See Press Office described as a necessary procedure, but not an emergency.

Not a good sign. Pneumonia is deadly, and I know it, it took my brother, and he was way younger than the pope.

I had it as a kid, double pneumonia. Was in the hospital in an oxygen tent for two weeks.
And my wife is going through her second bout of it in four years. She is now in an induced coma. Prognosis is serious. Her heart stopped for a bit and they are worried about brain damage.

Pope Francis may abdicate for health reasons — cardinal

The 88-year-old Francis has been in the hospital since February 14, suffering from bilateral pneumonia

ROME, February 21. /TASS/. Pope Francis may resign like his predecessor Benedict XVI if he is unable to cope with his duties for health reasons, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi said.

However, Ravasi noted in an interview with the Corriere della Sera newspaper that Francis wanted to see through the 2025 Jubilee Year of Christianity celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church.

"If Pope Francis has difficulties in fulfilling his papal duties, he will make his own decision. I think he may choose to resign. It's up to him, he has the final say. The pope has a great desire to have a Jubilee Year dedicated to hope. It is important for him," the cardinal said.

The 88-year-old Francis has been in the hospital since February 14, suffering from bilateral pneumonia. Media outlets started speculating about the pontiff’s possible near demise and about the following conclave (closed assembly of cardinals for the election of a pope). Another option is abdication: Francis himself has repeatedly said that Benedict XVI, who will forever be remembered as the first pontiff in 600 years to resign from the job, "paved the way for successors." The Pope even said that he signed a letter of abdication that would be taken into account if he lost capacity. He noted that he gave it to the Vatican’s former Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone, and had no idea of where it could currently be (probably with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s current secretary of state).

On his part, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, the president of the Italian Episcopal Conference, said comforting words about Pope Francis' health. "We are all worried, but the fact that he is getting up, reading newspapers and receiving visitors [Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited Pope Francis on February 19] indicates that he is recovering," he stressed.

The prophecy of Malachi (or Malachy), according to that Pope Francis is supposed to be the last. What may happen then remains to be seen.

Pope in hospital, condition remains critical but no new respiratory crisis
Pope Francis is alert and oxygen is still being administered. His blood values are improving thanks to transfusions. There is an initial slight renal insufficiency. He attended Mass today.

    Vatican News

The Holy See Press Office provided the following medical update on Pope Francis on Sunday evening:

The condition of the Holy Father remains critical, but since yesterday evening, he has not experienced any further respiratory crises.

He received two units of concentrated red blood cells with beneficial effects, and his hemoglobin levels have risen.

The thrombocytopenia remains stable; however, some blood tests show early, mild renal insufficiency, which is currently under control.

High-flow oxygen therapy continues through nasal cannulas.

The Holy Father remains alert and well-oriented.

The complexity of the clinical situation and the necessary time for the pharmacological treatments to show results require that the prognosis remain guarded.

This morning, in the apartment on the tenth floor, he participated in the Holy Mass, together with those who have been taking care of him during these days of hospitalization.
