Gene Hackman dead: Legendary actor and wife Betsy Arakawa found dead at home with their dog

Oscar-winning US actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa have been found dead at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, according to reports.

In a career that spanned more than six decades, he received two Academy Awards, two Baftas, four Golden Globes and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

A statement from the Santa Fe County Sheriff in New Mexico said: "We can confirm that both Gene Hackman and his wife were found deceased Wednesday afternoon at their residence on Sunset Trail.

"This is an active investigation - however, at this time we do not believe that foul play was a factor."

Hackman won the best actor Oscar for his role as Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle in William Friedkin's 1971 thriller The French Connection, and another for best supporting actor for playing Little Bill Daggett in Clint Eastwood's Western film Unforgiven in 1992.

His other Oscar-nominated roles were in 1967 movie Bonnie and Clyde, as Buck Barrow, 1970's I Never Sang for My Father, and as the agent in Mississippi Burning (1988).

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed the news to local media just after midnight on Wednesday that the couple had died, along with their dog.

The news was later confirmed to the Press Association news agency. Hackman was 95 and his wife 63.

Mr Mendoza said there was no immediate indication of foul play.

But he did not provide a cause of death or say when the couple might have died.

"All I can say is that we're in the middle of a preliminary death investigation, waiting on approval of a search warrant."

Much celebrated actor Hackman played more than 100 rules including Lex Luthor in Superman movies in the 1970s and 1980s.

He also starred in the hit movies Runaway Jury and The Conservation, as well as Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums.

His last big screen appearance came as Monroe Cole in Welcome to Mooseport in 2004.

    Wow, that's quite a shock.

He was a terrific actor, one of the best ever. And OMG, I never realized he was 95.

There are several news platforms with a running live updates page. Here's just one:

    https://news.sky.com/story/gene-hack...egend-13317906

With their dog being found dead as well, and no signs of foul play, one might suspect something like a faulty heating system leading to overnight carbon monoxide poisoning. But that's merely an immediate initial thought. There'll be so much public interest in this that a full police statement will come very soon.

Nope, but I just heard about it on X. It's breaking like wildfire. Great actor in his day, will be much missed.

But the dog, too? what could have happened?

    Carbon Monoxide poisoning perhaps?

pre-Epstein release mass suicide...? [...or so blurted out the black-pilled corner of my psyche]

    I doubt that's true

    [but...]

    Will wait for further news.

Gene Hackman's death and the deaths of his wife and dog are puzzling authorities, who have labeled his passing "suspicious."

According to a search warrant, obtained by TMZ, a Santa Fe detective who sought a search warrant wrote in his affidavit, he believes "the death of the two deceased individuals to be suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation because the reporting party found the front door of the residence unsecured and opened, deputies observed a healthy dog running loose on the property, another healthy dog near the deceased female, a deceased dog laying 10-15 feet from the deceased female in a closet of the bathroom, the heater being moved, the pill bottle being opened and pills scattered next to the female, the male decedent being located in a separate room of the residence, and no obvious signs of a gas leak."

Breaking this down ... Gene's wife, Betsy Arakawa, was found in the bathroom on the ground near the countertop, lying on her right side. The deputy saw a black space heater near her head. The deputy believed the heater could have fallen in the event Betsy abruptly fell to the ground.

The deputy also noticed an orange prescription bottle on the countertop, which was open with pills scattered on the countertop. It appears she had been dead for some time, because the body was in a state of decomposition with bloating in her face and mummification in her hands and feet.

Gene was found in a separate room off the kitchen. He was fully clothed and they suspected he may have suddenly fallen, because his sunglasses were found next to his body.

The fire department came and advised they did not see any signs of carbon monoxide leak or poisoning. The New Mexico gas company came to the residence and conducted testing on the gas lines in and around the house, and concluded, "As of now, there are no signs or evidence indicating there were any problems associated to the pipes in and around the residence."

The deceased dog, a German Shepherd, was found 10 to 15 feet from Betsy, in a closet of the bathroom. Two other dogs were found alive and healthy -- one inside the house and one outside.

The bodies were discovered by 2 maintenance workers, who said they hadn't seen them in approximately 2 weeks. When the maintenance workers arrived to discover the bodies, the front door was ajar, but the deputy says there were no signs of forced entry.

Barring some bizarre circumstance, the only plausible explanation is carbon monoxide, which seems something they could rule out (or confirm) easily.

In cases like this, vagueness, e.g. "no signs" of carbon monoxide poisoning is most suspicious. It's either yes, or no. There is no "i guess." Carbon monoxide poisoning is something that can be measured definitely.

This strange and tragic incident really quite impacted me today. (Maybe partly because I'm a dog owner?)

While thousands of people are guessing wildly all over the internet about what may have happened (and it appears not to be a gas or CO2 leak), what I find myself 'seeing' is this:
    1. Gene Hackman fell suddenly. At the time he was alive but unconscious.
    2. His wife, Betsy Arakawa, immediately suspected a heart problem and ran to the bathroom to get his pills.
    3. The large dog which was also there with her was overexcited and jumping around. Betsy, who was panicking, shut him in the closet for a few moments to get him out of the way.
    4. Then something happened to her in the bathroom. She collapsed, scattering the pills. The dog was left trapped in the closet where it eventually died. (The police should look for its desperate claw-scratch marks on the inside of the door.)
    5. Not well reported, but it's been mentioned in a few places. It seems a second dog was later found dead in a kennel outside, where it was tied up and eventually died of hunger or thirst. That suggests that this all happened quite a few days ago, maybe even sometime last week.

    Edit to add:

    (5) may have been incorrectly reported. In this new press conference the police said that the dog that died [the only one] was "in a crate or a kennel" (not in a 'closet') — but in the bathroom. It's really almost inevitable that following incidents like this there can often be misunderstandings and confused reporting.

I don't know if he pushed for the shot or did the shot but - For the people I would hazard a guess at Vaxx injury. As sudden adult death is a thing now.

I know a lot of people love ("their") actors but I have no real respect for any of them or the mesmeric 'industry' they where in. It has a hell of a lot to answer for, in the big scheme of how we got here.

Self deletion is my guess, and I don't trust any police statement about anything.

If it isn’t carbon monoxide it could be Radon gas which is a silent killer and non detectable. You have to specifically test your house for it because it is odorless and non detectable.

Yes, but how does that factor in with the other two deaths? Whatever is going on here, I doubt it has to do with a vaxx injury.

What if he just had a stroke or heart attack and died and she didn't want to be without him and ate a handful of pills and checked out....the dogs were collateral damage.

Tis what i was thinking, Gene collapsed and died of old age, heart attack, or what ever, his wife finds him and tries to resuscitate but could not, then in a state of sudden extreme sadness she ODs on pills, then the dog is like, oh great who the hell is gonna feed me now, and dies of hunger, along with another dog later.

It is weird but i dont go along with the gas leak,... so they had been dead for days, after death there is noone to now turn the gas back off, so who ever found them would have surely smelt the gas, and the gas meter would indicate an unusually large amount of gas passing the meter, think ill just get some popcorn and wait and see what the "experts" come up with.

Or maybe the dog freed itself from the closet/crate and saw all the pills on the floor, and ate them up.............RRR

Just a thought regarding the front door being found opened: dogs are known to be able to open doors.
Generally speaking, atleast in Australia, front doors have the large knob type of handle, not a lever type, (which a dog can pull down) so the dog couldnt have turned a knob with its paws, IMO..................RRR

I don't know about the US, but in Canada it's quite common to have the lever type of handle, AND the door opening to the inside. So that all an animal has to do is push the lever handle down, and they're basically inside the house. I know of some Canadian folks who got surprise visits by bears in their kitchen because of these lever handles.
