NASA’S Perseverance Rover’s First 360 View of Mars (Official) 2021

This video shows the first 360-degree view of the landing site of NASA’s Perseverance rover on Mars, as captured by the rover’s color Navigation Cameras, or Navcams. The Navcams are on the remote sensing mast (or “head”) of the rover. Perseverance possesses the most cameras of any Mars rover to date, with 19 on the rover.

Perseverance landed on Mars’ Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021. These are the sixty seconds of images obtained by beyond elated NASA engineers gathered around their screens on February 20, 2021, and released to the public on February 22, 2021.

How Navy Submarine Cooks Feed 150 Sailors At Sea | Boot Camp

Chef: “If our morale is low, their morale is low. You can easily taste it in the food.”

United States Navy submariners deploy for months at a time, spending weeks submerged at sea with no internet and minimal contact with the outside world. Aboard the Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarine USS South Dakota, culinary specialists work tirelessly in incredibly tight quarters to prepare meals for up to 150 crew members.

Milky Way over Australian Pinnacles by Michael Goh

What strange world is this? Earth. In the foreground of the featured image are the Pinnacles, unusual rock spires in Nambung National Park in Western Australia. Made of ancient sea shells (limestone), how these human-sized picturesque spires formed remains unknown. In the background, just past the end of the central Pinnacle, is a bright crescent Moon.

The eerie glow around the Moon is mostly zodiacal light, sunlight reflected by dust grains orbiting between the planets in the Solar System. Arching across the top is the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy. Many famous stars and nebulas are also visible in the background night sky.

The featured 29-panel panorama was taken and composed in 2015 September after detailed planning that involved the Moon, the rock spires, and their corresponding shadows. Even so, the strong zodiacal light was a pleasant surprise.

Friday, Feb. 14 - Evening Zodiacal Light (after dusk)

If you live in a location where the sky is free of light pollution, you might be able to spot the Zodiacal Light during the two weeks that precede the new moon on February 27.

Starting on Friday, February 14, after the evening twilight has faded, you'll have about half an hour to check the western sky for a broad wedge of faint light extending upwards from the horizon and centered on the ecliptic below the planet Venus. That glow is the zodiacal light - sunlight scattered from countless small particles of material that populate the plane of our solar system.

    Space Rock | Jim Sullivan

One of the strangest stories in music lore is the mystery of Jim Sullivan. A singer/songwriter from California by way of Oklahoma, Sullivan played in the clubs and coffeehouses around Malibu in the mid to late 60's. The times were right for his style of music, and he gained a devoted following. Club owners were glad to book the singer, as they knew he would draw a crowd.

Friends like Peter Fonda (who cast him as an extra in Easy Rider), Mama Cass Elliot, and others felt so strongly about his talent, they helped finance the recording of an album in LA, even hiring the loose collective of top-notch session musicians known as the Wrecking Crew to back him up. The album, UFO, was released on a small label in 1969, and though it was re-released the following year on a larger label, it failed to garner commercial success. He recorded a second album in 1972 for Playboy Records, but it too went largely unnoticed.

Sullivan decided to go to Nashville and try his luck in the Music City, where his sister, an established session musician with connections, arranged for his arrival.

He left LA on the afternoon of March 4, 1975, promising his wife and son that they would join him later. Police in Santa Rosa, New Mexico pulled him over for erratic driving. They were satisfied that he was not under the influence, and Sullivan agreed to check into the local La Mesa Motel.

Police reports indicate the bed was never slept in, and the key was found locked in the room. Although authorities later found his car 25 miles away near a desert ranch, he was never seen or heard from again.

Here is a paper or article about it. Dunno if the author or the journal are legit. Found the link searching MOC e1000462, from the tweet pic.

Quote Evidence Of Alien Activity On Mars
    Steven Maxwell Beresford

    beresfordmax@yahoo.com

    Abstract

Inspection of the Mars Orbiter Camera image E1000462 reveals what
appears to be an artifact in the form of an almost perfect square with
sides about 3 km long. The author has enhanced E1000462 by means
of contrast modification, revealing new details.
    Background Of The Discovery
NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor was launched in November of 1996 and
orbited the planet from 1997 to 2006. Equipped with a high resolution
camera known as the Mars Orbiter Camera, its mission was to map the
Martian surface and identify potential landing sites for rovers.
The Mars Orbiter Camera consisted of a narrow angle camera that
obtained high resolution grayscale images, and two low resolution
multicolor wide angle cameras. It operated for 4.8 years between
September 1997 and November 2006. During that period it took
97,097 high resolution grayscale images of the Martian surface.
Image E1000462 is extraordinarily significant because it shows what
appears to be a massive artifact in the shape of an almost perfect
square that is partially buried by sand. The sides of the square are
about 3 km long. Two of the corners are well-defined right-angles.
The square appears to be the ruins of an ancient walled settlement
built by intelligent beings ~ aliens ~ perhaps millions of years ago.
The square contains smaller features that also appear to be ruins.
The link to the original image is given by Googling: MOC E1000462.
The square is located at the top of the grayscale strip. The proposed
name of the formation is Alien Square.

Text copy happened to work for me. Here's the more lengthy discussion from "The General Science Journal" article Evidence Of Alien Activity On Mars that you provided:
    Discussion
It is inconceivable that the formation is of natural origin. Terrestrial
geological forces do not spontaneously produce massive walled squares.
Similar geological forces presumably occur on Mars. It seems obvious
that the formation is an artifact created by intelligent beings, aliens,
who inhabited Mars and possibly other planets in the distant past.
The question is whether the aliens evolved on Mars or were space
travellers who arrived from other star systems and colonized Mars.
If they colonized Mars, they may have done so when it was warmer
and wetter than it is now. This raises the possibility that the square
    is millions of years old.

Another question is whether the aliens also colonized Earth and
if their descendents are here today in some form, or in a hidden
location, or whether they are connected to recent UFO sightings.
These are important questions. Recent advances in astronomy have
shown that there are billions of stars in our galaxy and that almost
all stars are surrounded by planets, many of which have liquid water.
It therefore seems likely that our galaxy contains other sentient beings.
The Mars Orbital Camera generated 97,097 high resolution grayscale
images. The vast majority have never been closely examined. It is
predicted that close examination of the remaining images will reveal
massive artifacts similar to E1000462 on other parts of the planet.
This is a project that could easily be undertaken by members of the
    public and amateur astronomers.

NASA is currently using its rovers to look for signs of microbial life.
Although this is commendable, it is well within NASA’s capabilities to
land a rover directly into the square. If this is done, it is predicted that
exploration of the square will reveal other artifacts indicative of the size
    and lifestyle of the aliens.

Hi Paul. Mystery to me, how tiny electrics can go astray. Found out today, that a week ago one of my credit cards was false charged for near Cdn$650., called it in and had the card cancelled. That was strange.

This article is whimsical, in a nice way. If we could but prove to ourselves that more capable races preceded us, maybe we would become more humble, and go easier on our fellow Earthlings …naw, forget that.

Study Finds Humans Age Faster at 2 Sharp Peaks – Here's When

The progress of a human being through life might be thought of as a mostly gradual succession of changes from the ovum to the grave.

But if you wake up one morning, look in the mirror, and wonder when you suddenly grew so much older, you may not be imagining things.

According to recent research into the molecular changes associated with aging, humans experience two drastic lurches forward, one at the average age of 44 and the other at the average age of 60.

"We're not just changing gradually over time; there are some really dramatic changes," geneticist Michael Snyder of Stanford University explained in August 2024 when the study was published.

"It turns out the mid-40s is a time of dramatic change, as is the early 60s. And that's true no matter what class of molecules you look at."

To this end, they have been tracking a group of 108 adults, who have been donating biological samples every few months over several years.

Using the samples from their cohort, the researchers have been tracking different kinds of biomolecules. The different molecules studied include RNA, proteins, lipids, and gut, skin, nasal, and oral microbiome taxa, for a total of 135,239 biological features. Each participant submitted an average of 47 samples over 626 days, with the longest-serving participant submitting 367 samples. This wealth of data resulted in more than 246 billion data points, which the researchers then processed, looking for patterns in the changes.

Around 81 percent of all the molecules they studied showed changes during one or both of these stages. Changes peaked in the mid-40s, and again in the early 60s, with slightly different profiles.

The mid-40s peak showed changes in molecules related to the metabolism of lipids, caffeine, and alcohol, as well as cardiovascular disease, and dysfunctions in skin and muscle.

The early 60s peak was associated with carbohydrate and caffeine metabolism, cardiovascular disease, skin and muscle, immune regulation, and kidney function.

    Coming Soon

Total Lunar Eclipse – Blood Moon

The first total lunar eclipse since 2022 is set to grace the night sky on March 13-14, 2025 — but only for those on Earth's night side. During this celestial event, the moon will slip into Earth's shadow for 65 minutes, taking on a deep reddish hue in what’s often called a "blood moon."

While the eclipse will be visible worldwide at the same universal time, the best views will be in North and South America. Observers in parts of Europe may catch a glimpse at moonset, while those in East Asia will see it as the moon rises. The point of greatest eclipse falls over the Pacific Ocean, making it an unforgettable sight for skywatchers across the Americas.

◘ North America: All phases of the eclipse will be visible across all 50 U.S. states (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada and Mexico. South America: Most of the continent will witness the entire event, with totality visible from Brazil, Argentina and Chile starting after midnight on March 14.

◘ Europe: Western Europe — including Spain, France and the U.K. — will see totality as the moon sets early on the morning of March 14.

◘ Africa: Extreme Western Africa — including Cape Verde, Morocco and Senegal — will see totality as the moon sets early on the morning of March 14.

◘ Oceania: New Zealanders will see the eclipse in its later stages, with the moon already in partial shadow as it rises on March 14.

Unlike during a solar eclipse, it is safe to look at the moon during the entire lunar eclipse. They're not only completely safe but also leisurely, lasting many hours. This one occurs between 11:57 p.m. and 6 a.m. EDT (03:57 and 10:00 UTC) — a total of six hours — though arguably the most interesting part, totality, happens between 2:26 and 03:31 a.m. EDT (06:26 and 07:31 UTC).

LIFE AS WE DON'T kNoW IT

Some Aliens May Need Sulfuric Acid Like We Need Water

For decades and today, some of the world's most brilliant scientists have been combing the cosmos, looking for water in their search for extraterrestrial life. But they may be barking up the wrong tree.

Life as we know it needs water, but life as we don't know it may run on something else entirely. Something like ... concentrated sulfuric acid.

The chemistry of human life wouldn't work in a place like the huge Saturn moon Titan, where it's so cold that ice behaves more like rock, or in the acidic clouds of Venus. But a different chemistry, which built all the requisite pieces out of different materials, might have a shot. Imagine cells that use methane, sulfuric acid, or even molten rock the way your cells use water.

According to a 2021 study by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) molecular biologist William Bains and his colleagues, it turns out that, if we're looking for life as we don't know it, the best solvent out there may be concentrated sulfuric acid — the stuff that's floating around in the clouds of Venus.

At the most basic level, life is just a series of chemical reactions. Those reactions need a medium in which to occur, which chemists call a solvent: something fluid enough that molecules can float around and mingle, and there needs to be a lot of it in one place. But not just any liquid will do; a solvent also needs to help break down and transport the chemicals that cells need to live — without also dissolving important molecules like lipids and amino acids.

Here on Earth, water fits the bill perfectly, but it may not be the only liquid in the universe capable of supporting the chemistry of life. In a new study, Bains and his colleagues rated several possible solvents based on how they interact with the chemical building blocks of life and how common they should be on rocky planets.

Candidates ranged from the liquid forms of methane and ethane, ammonia and carbon dioxide to even stranger possibilities like pitch and molten rock. The surprising champion is a chemical we Earthlings think of as painfully hostile to life: concentrated sulfuric acid.

Based on physics models of how solar systems form, sulfuric acid should be fairly common on rocky planets like Venus, and it's definitely good at dissolving things. But surprisingly, some of the most important building blocks for life — things like amino acids and lipids — can float around and do chemistry in pure sulfuric acid just as easily as they can in water.

Somewhere in the universe, sulfuric acid lakes could be teeming with life forms whose basic chemistry is only a little different from ours.

    New Mexico / Old Mexico

Scientists Find Vehicles Further Back in Time Than Thought Before in USA

Uncannily preserved in the sands of New Mexico, archaeologists have discovered the oldest evidence yet of a vehicle used by humans: drag marks, along with footprints, left in the ground that have been dated to 22,000 years ago.

As detailed in a study published in the journal Quaternary Science Advances, these marks were left behind by a type of sledge known as a travois. Think of it as a wheelbarrow without the wheels.

Typically comprising two wooden poles held in each hand at the front, and intersecting at the back in a V or X-shape, a travois would have been pulled across the ground, carrying meat, game or other supplies. Their usage is well-known to scientists — but this is by far the oldest example, predating the invention of the wheeled vehicle in Mesopotamia by some 17,000 years, according to researchers.

"There's nothing this old," study author Matthew Bennett at the University of Bournemouth told reporters.

The ancient runnels, as the authors describe them, were discovered in the dried mud of a bygone lake in White Sands National Park in New Mexico, hidden by sediment for untold ages, and finally exhumed by a chance mix of natural erosion and careful excavation by researchers.

Rarely were they found in isolation, with the researchers discovering other tracks of footprints nearby all heading in the same direction. In many cases, based on their size, the prints were left behind by children.

But perhaps the discovery's most staggering implication is that humans may have crossed into the Americas much earlier than commonly believed, with dominant theories — which are being increasingly challenged — holding that nobody made the trek until around 15,000 years ago.

"The peopling of the Americas debate is a very controversial one, but we're fairly confident about the dates," Bennett said. "The traditional story is that the ice sheets parted and they came, but you can come through before the door closes, too."

Intuitive Machines lands near lunar South Pole, but fate of private Athena probe unclear

Intuitive Machines is on the moon again — and again there is some drama.

The Houston-based company's second lunar lander, named Athena, touched down at the Mons Mouton region of the moon's south pole on schedule today (March 6) at 12:31 p.m. EST (1731 GMT). It wasn't a picture-perfect landing, however. While Athena continued sending data home to Earth and began generating power on the lunar surface, the mission team could not immediately determine if it landed fully upright as planned.

"We can confirm Athena is on the surface of the moon," Josh Marshall, Intuitive Machines' communications director, said during the landing webcast today. "The team is going through the process of powering down systems that are not required. We are working to figure out the orientation of the vehicle, which is important because that will determine how much signal we're going to have."

It was a déjà vu moment for Intuitive Machines, which pulled off the first-ever private moon landing last year with its Odysseus spacecraft.

Odysseus came in a bit too fast during its February 2024 descent, breaking one of its legs and tipping partway over onto its side, a configuration that hampered its ability to communicate with Earth.
