Many may have seen this already, as it's been shared extensively in many articles. But it's very thought-provoking and poignant.

This is the first photo taken together of four sisters, Heather, Mimi, Bebe and Laurie Brown, in 1975.

Then they decided to take the same photo every single year thereafter.

I've copied below the photos taken every other year, as 40 was too many for the Avalon software in one post.

The final image, take in 2014, is copied here full-size.

The entire 40-year sequence can be seen in a 3-minute slideshow on this YouTube video.

Very interesting, but jeez, don't they smile? They look thoroughly down in the dumps in almost every picture.

Here's a collection of splendidly restored archive footage from the late 1890's (when the 20th century was still in the future!)

(Also, does anyone else think when watching these old films 'where was I and what was I doing when this moment was shot -- was I excarnate, or living a life somewhere?')

Some fascinating colourised footage of the Tasmanian Tiger, also called the Thylacine. The animal is technically extinct, though sporadic sightings continue to be reported in its native Tasmanian habitat. The last live specimen died in captivity in 1936, and this rare footage, taken by David Fleay at Beaumaris Zoo, Hobart, in December 1933, remains the best documentary evidence of this vanished species.

The first vehicle that I remember our family owning was a pink pontiac stationwagon. Guess it was all the rage back then.
(I think our pink was a bit brighter, though)

I suspect the color was my mom's choice.
My dad, in his ingenuity and proud of his family of 3 little girls, devised a plywood camping trailer for the stationwagon to pull. And of course he painted it to match the car. Pink and white. Gosh, we must have been a sight traveling the country with that very small plywood camper. But we were able to visit just about every state in the US, and so many national parks with that rig, and created many exceptional childhood experiences.

Some more vintage TV here courtesy of The Goodies who were about as zany as anyone could find anywhere. They used to have me in stitches when I was a young lad much to my own dear mum's bemusement

There's real skill in being able to pull these sorts of scenes off without *corpsing although I do suspect there will have likely been multiple takes before agreeing the final cut. Outtakes anyone?
*Corpsing — verb – British theatrical slang. When an actor breaks character during a scene — by laughing or forgetting their lines, or by causing another cast member to do so. The origin of the term is unknown; it refers to almost literally murdering the scene.
    As described here:
The Goodies - Kitten Kong (9th April 1972). There's a monster loose in London and Michael Aspel is right in the thick of things.

Chicago during the depression in another restored old film. Remarkable clarity, but makes for grim viewing at times. Poverty, listlessness, litter rolling in the streets. Near the end though, I couldn't help but smile at the kids fooling around, clambering on the fence, trying to climb the wall... No matter what era, kids will be kids.

    Have Gun Will Travel
I recently responded to a much younger friend, "Have Freedom Pass Will Travel?" when she expressed concern about train fare. As she obviously didn't know what I was talking about, I was minded that some catchphrases just set us apart.

Here's another, mostly understood only by English people of a certain age:

Many years ago my parents were holidaying in Vienna and watched a brass band playing in the park. They said after the second song, the band leader turned to the audience and said "What do you think of it so far?" and when the English people shouted back "Rubbish!" (including them) everybody else looked aghast. Fortunately the band was English too

The Beatles at the Cavern Club, August 22nd 1962: their 126th lunchtime performance at the Cavern Club on Mathew Street, which was demolished - sadly - in 1973.

When The Beatles were filmed at The Cavern Club in 1962, the drummer was Ringo Starr. The specific filming took place on August 22, 1962, when a Granada Television crew recorded the band performing "Some Other Guy" and "Kansas City" for the programme Know The North. This was just days after Ringo Starr had joined the group, replacing Pete Best, whose final performance with The Beatles was a week earlier, on August 15, 1962.

During the filmed performance, some fans in the crowd can be heard shouting "We want Pete!" in reference to Pete Best's recent dismissal. This marks the historic moment when Ringo Starr, having only just joined The Beatles, was on drums for their first television-filmed appearance at The Cavern Club.

Every culture on earth has had legends and myths about serious things. Massive floods. Fire from the sky. Woke epidemics. Want to say “FORGET THAT”, but this timeline don’t entertain me.

Here is the Hollywood expression of the ancient myth of the chariot/wagon. This should interest UFO historians, because the myths mostly say that many people were saved, and this implies a large vehicle. I’m only familiar (not first or second hand) with smaller rescue craft that could fit in a back yard. Unless the inside was bigger than the outside…

Many cultures haven’t taken a self effacing jocular attitude about their myths, which is what sets this modern American example apart, IMO.

“A wonderful spoof of disaster films, The Big Bus is about the world's first nuclear-powered bus - a 75-ton monster on 32 enormous wheels - and its maiden journey from New York to Denver. Jockeying the world's greatest bus, of course, is the world's greatest bus driver. His co-pilot is given to sudden blackouts and has a penchant for driving on the shoulder of the road. A pair of evil-doers vow to destroy the bus at the outset, thus providing lots of hilarious suspense.”
