Transhumanism and Spirituality – Can They Work Together?
Lately, I’ve been thinking about whether transhumanism and spirituality are really as incompatible as some people assume. On the surface, transhumanism is often seen as a materialist pursuit—using technology to extend life, enhance intelligence, or even upload consciousness. Meanwhile, spirituality focuses on inner development, transcendence, and the idea that consciousness isn’t just a byproduct of the brain.
But what if these two paths aren’t in opposition? What if technology could actually help expand consciousness? AI, for example, is already being used to study meditation and altered states of awareness. In the future, could advanced neural interfaces enhance our ability to reach deep meditative or transcendental states? Could AI, trained on vast amounts of spiritual teachings, act as a kind of guide—helping people along their path in a more personalized way?
And then there’s mind-uploading. If we eventually reach a point where consciousness can exist outside the biological body, would that mean we’ve simply built a new “vehicle” for awareness—much like how some esoteric traditions describe the soul moving beyond the physical form? Would this be a distraction from true spiritual evolution, or could it be a tool to explore consciousness in ways we can’t yet imagine?
I know many here are wary of AI and transhumanism, and I get why. But I also wonder if dismissing it outright is missing the bigger picture. Could transhumanism be part of humanity’s natural evolution toward higher consciousness? Or is it just another materialist dead end?
Curious to hear your thoughts.
