The Sky This Week – Spring

Thursday, March 20 - March Equinox

On Thursday, March 20, at 4:01 a.m. EDT or 1:01 a.m. PDT and 09:01 GMT, the sun will cross the celestial equator traveling north, marking the vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of northern spring. Days and nights will be of equal length on that day, and the sun will rise due east and set due west. At mid-northern latitudes on the March equinox, the amount of daylight added to each day peaks at 3 minutes.

In the southern sky on Thursday morning, March 20, early-morning sky-watchers can see the bright, waning gibbous moon shining several finger-widths to the right of Antares, the bright, reddish star that marks the heart of the Scorpion. The duo will be cozy enough to share the view in binoculars (orange circle). Observers located in most of Australia, southern New Zealand, and westernmost Antarctica can watch the moon occult Antares with unaided eyes.

    Cyclones at Jupiter's North Pole

"What is this? No, it's not a pizza! It's Jupiter's north pole! Why are there so many cyclones around the north pole of Jupiter? The topic is still being researched! NASA's robotic Juno mission orbiting Jupiter took data in 2018 that was used to construct this stunning view of the curious cyclones at Jupiter's north pole! Measuring the thermal emission from Jovian cloud tops, the infrared observations are not restricted to the hemisphere illuminated by sunlight! They reveal eight cyclonic features that surround a cyclone about 4,000 kilometers in diameter, just offset from the giant planet's geographic north pole! Similar data show a cyclone at the Jovian south pole with five circumpolar cyclones! The south pole cyclones are slightly larger than their northern cousins! Oddly, data from the once Saturn-orbiting Cassini mission has shown that Saturn's north and south poles each have only a single cyclonic storm system! Have a great day everyone, and I'll see you in class!"

    Saturn Now Has 274 Moons

A team of astronomers from Taiwan, Canada, the United States, and France has observed 128 additional moons orbiting the gas giant Saturn, bringing its total number of confirmed moons to 274. The International Astronomical Union recognized the discovery on March 11, 2025.

Dr. Edward Ashton, a postdoctoral researcher with the Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Academia Sincia, and his colleagues used the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) to repeatedly monitor the sky around Saturn between 2019 to 2021 in minute detail, combining multiple images to strengthen an astronomical object’s signal.

This initial run yielded 62 moons — and an even larger number of other objects that, at that time, couldn’t be designated.

“With the knowledge that these were probably moons, and that there were likely even more waiting to be discovered, we revisited the same sky fields for three consecutive months in 2023,” Dr. Ashton said.

“Sure enough, we found 128 new moons. Based on our projections, I don’t think Jupiter will ever catch up.”

I suspect they are the intersection of Birkeland currents with the surface of Jupiter.

Stuart Talbott: Electric Jupiter Baffles Astronomers

    Thunderbolts

    Published 15th October 2022 (11:11)

Quote Another baffling surprise has been revealed by NASA’s Juno space probe since it entered Jupiter’s orbit in 2016. It's the discovery of multiple cyclones which appear fixed and unmoving at each of Jupiter’s poles. Nothing in the standard theoretical toolkits of atmospheric and planetary science predicted nor can explain this phenomena.

As noted in a Phys.org report, “….an ‘anticyclonic' ring of winds move in the opposite direction of the cyclones, which is what keeps them in place. The team was unable to find signatures of convection, which would help explain how heat was being used to fuel the cyclones. They acknowledge that much more work will need to be done to fully explain the behavior of Jupiter's cyclones.”

Independent researcher, Stuart Talbott, points out the irony of this hypothesis and describes how the observed effect of counter rotational wind movements associated with Jupiter’s cyclones are actually caused by incoming Birkeland currents. This dramatic phenomena is testimony to the electrical circuitry that pervades our solar system, and indeed our entire Electric Universe.

    Oklahoma UFO

    UFO does a ballroom dance.

Quote An Oklahoma City man captured mystifying footage and photos of a bizarre UFO that he likened to a jellybean filled with plasma. According to a local media report, the odd sighting occurred on January 25th as Chris Frederick and his wife were about to head out for dinner. Their Saturday evening excursion came to a sudden stop when they reached their driveway and received a call from a concerned neighbor who had spotted something unusual in the sky. A buzz soon swept through the neighborhood, recounted Frederick, "before long, we were all standing out in the street and had our phones out."

New Beginnings in Space As Astronauts Step Into Their Zero-Gravity Home

Four Expedition 72 astronauts are settling into life aboard the International Space Station after arriving on Saturday, just days after the departure of the SpaceX Crew-9 mission on Tuesday.

NASA Flight Engineers Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers spent Wednesday unpacking cargo from the SpaceX Dragon Endurance spacecraft. Later, they transferred emergency hardware from the station into Dragon and reconfigured the spacecraft for its docked operations. After a midday break, they continued familiarizing themselves with space station systems and adjusting to life in orbit.

Their SpaceX Crew-10 teammates, Takuya Onishi from JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) and Kirill Peskov (Roscosmos), also took part in cargo transfers and station orientation. Onishi assisted with unpacking, reviewed upcoming science tasks, and exercised on the advanced resistive device.

Meanwhile, Peskov tested video reception for the European robotic arm and worked on life support systems, as all continued adapting to microgravity.

Skateboarding vids are generally pretty dreamy. Successful makes of usually-increasingly difficult tricks, for the length of one or two well tailored-to 3-minute songs.

Skaters and fans know that most tricks are not first try, in any proper skateboard vid. Sometimes the battle takes several days, returning to the spot, and can be brutal.

This is a story of a young Japanese pro, Aimu Yamazuki, what it took to make the tricks in his opening part in his brand Primative’s recent vid Wildfire.

I am so inspired by his footwork and awareness in bailing out his many fails. Kicks the board away, places landing feet off beside the falling board. His falls look mostly graceful and harmless too.

Article is forthwith, then the vid of Aimu’s battles, which L= 25:32.

Last is the vid Wildfire, L= 22:13, his part is first. More tricks shown here, than in the ‘makings-of’ vid. Other skaters ensue. There is a girl team mate skating though 7:-+.

Will the Blaze Star Explode on March 27, 2025?

The Blaze Star isn’t one star but two. It’s a binary system with a white dwarf and red giant. The Blaze Star’s white dwarf builds up material on its surface, siphoned off from the red giant star. Periodically, it “can’t take no more” and explodes, about every 80 years.

Have you ever heard of the Blaze Star? It’s a star in the constellation Corona Borealis, the Northern Crown, that was supposed to go nova last year. Well, we’re still waiting. But when it finally does erupt, it’ll be a once-in-a-lifetime show in our night sky.

The eagerly awaited Blaze Star nova is a real opportunity for keen night sky observers to witness a “new star” in the sky … but only for a few days before it fades away again.

A new estimate for the Blaze Star’s eruption

Might the Blaze Star finally explode on March 27, 2025? Or maybe November 10, 2025? Or perhaps after that … ?

Those are the predictions of Jean Schneider (https://luth7.obspm.fr/) of the Paris Observatory, published in Research Notes of the American Astronomical Society (October 2024).

Schneider came to his possible dates using a combination of the previous eruption dates and the orbital ephemeris of the binary system. While Schneider admits in his paper that no one can exactly predict the eruption, he is trying to predict eruption dates with a precision of a week or two. Will his predictions hold up? The only way to know for sure is to go out and observe Corona Borealis to see if a “new” star appears!

    Jack the Ripper: Positive ID?

The infamous killer who terrorized London women has largely been referred to as simply “Jack the Ripper” -- until now.

Jack the Ripper has lived in infamy and lore for more than a century after he committed the murders of at least five women in Whitechapel between August and November of 1888. Police never found Jack the Ripper, who was also referred to as the “Whitechapel Murderer” and the “Leather Apron.” He was infamous for slitting the throat of his victims before removing the internal organs of at least three people.

Historian Russell Edwards, who has been on the project over ten years, says he has identified Jack the Ripper as Aaron Kosminski through a DNA match of a shawl found at the scene of one of his murders.

Kosminski was a Polish immigrant who came to Whitechapel, England, in 1881 alongside his brother. He became a barber once in the British capitol.

Edwards told the “Today Show Australia” that he came to purchase the shawl in 2007 after it was purported to be at the scene of the murder of Catherine Eddowes.

Kosminski, who was aged 23 at the time of the murders, has long been considered a suspect. He had schizophrenia and was in a mental asylum at the time of his death in 1919.

Thanks to Kosminski’s oldest brother’s great-great-granddaughter, the revelation was made after they provided a DNA sample.

According to the Daily Mail, Edwards has hired a legal team to help gain an inquest after he found a 100% DNA match. Descendants of both Eddowes and Kosminski have backed this move.

As he told “Today,” Edwards and his team have sent a letter to the attorney general requesting permission to go to Britain’s High Court for a further inquest. The hope is that Kosminski can be legally tied to the murder.

“The name Jack the Ripper has become sensationalized. It has gone down in history as this famous character,” Karen Miller, the great-great-great-granddaughter of Eddowes said.

“What about the real name of the person who did this? Having the real person legally named in a court, which can consider all the evidence, would be a form of justice for the victims. We have got the proof. Now, we need this inquest to legally name the killer.”

Drake Passage: The 'most dreaded bit of ocean on the globe'

Waves reach up to 80 feet (25 meters) high

The Drake Passage off the West Antarctic Peninsula is a notoriously dangerous channel that connects the Atlantic, Pacific and Southern oceans.

The stretch is an ocean channel between the southern tip of South America and the West Antarctic Peninsula. Named after the 16th-century explorer Sir Francis Drake, it is notorious for whipping up wild storms and monster waves up to 80 feet (25 meters) tall.

The passage is "the most dreaded bit of ocean on the globe," Alfred Lansing wrote in his 1959 book Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage to the Antarctic.

At around 600 miles (965 kilometers) wide, the channel is relatively narrow compared with the ocean around it, meaning currents speed up as they are forced through the passage. The same goes for southern winds, which blow unimpeded from west to east around Antarctica before they reach the Drake Passage.

As winds funnel through the passage, they whisk up huge waves, some of which can be dangerous — and even deadly — for passengers on boats making the 48-hour-long crossing. In the best case, the waves make for a bumpy ride, known as the "Drake shake."

"It's always interesting when you go to dinner and they put sticky mats on all the tables to make sure your plates and things don't slide around," Karen Heywood, a professor of physical oceanography at the University of East Anglia in the U.K. who sailed through the Drake Passage in 2024, told National Geographic.

MSM UFO | Howie Mandel - Joe Rogan

Howie recounts an amazing experience he and his wife had in Canada.

Quote We were driving down a country road. I thought ‘Oh my God there is a giant accident way up ahead’. Because I saw this line, half a mile wide, of all these flashing lights. I thought it was a lineup of ambulances or first responders or whatever. As I got closer and closer, that whole line of lights, quicker than I can fathom, just shot into the sky and disappeared.

We have never seen anything since. This is way before the internet. We called the airport, we called the military. We did not see anything on the news. But we both saw it.
