What 23andMe’s Bankruptcy Means For Your Genetic Data

“We have still not figured out policies that are protective for people”

A genetic data giant is falling, and it’s unclear what will happen to millions of people’s most intimate personal information in the aftermath.

On March 23, DNA testing company 23andMe announced it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a move intended to facilitate its sale — along with the genetic data of over 15 million customers worldwide. A bankruptcy court hearing began March 26.

The San Francisco–based company has been reeling since a 2023 data breach exposed ancestry information — and, in some cases, health data — of about 7 million users. Bankruptcy documents made public by 404 Media show that more than 50 class-action lawsuits followed.

The situation reignites long-standing concerns about genetic privacy. The 2018 arrest of the Golden State Killer, identified through a public ancestry database, first raised alarms about the safety of genetic data. With a patchwork of state-level legislation and no clear federal oversight beyond a rule prohibiting genetic discrimination by employers and health insurance companies — but not life insurance or other entities — genetic testing companies have been free to create their own rules, says sociologist of science Alondra Nelson of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J.

“We have gotten 20 years into this industry, and we are about to have a major exchange of 15 million sets of people’s data, and we have still not figured out policies that are protective for people,” Nelson says.

23andMe has assured customers that bankruptcy “does not change how we store, manage, or protect customer data.” Any future buyer, the company says, will adhere to those data standards. But California Attorney General Rob Bonta has urged Californians to instruct 23andMe to delete their data and destroy any biological samples stored at the company. Other attorney generals across the country are echoing that call and making residents aware of their rights.

Supermoon Will Coincide With Rare 'Devil Horns' Solar Eclipse

On Saturday, March 29, two weeks after a total lunar eclipse was visible to all of North America, skywatchers will be treated to a spectacular event that has not been seen from anywhere since last October: a solar eclipse.

During this eclipse, which is expected to be one of the best skywatching events in 2025, observers in eastern Canada and the northeastern U.S. will be able to witness a partially eclipsed sunrise. It will be the first solar eclipse in North America since the "Great American Eclipse" on April 8, 2024.

This event will be a deep partial solar eclipse; about 93% of the sun's disk will be blocked by the new moon. As such, it will be a near — but not quite — total solar eclipse. The event will be visible at sunrise and shortly after from parts of North America, and then from Greenland, Iceland, Europe and northwest Africa, where it will be a smaller eclipse as the sun climbs higher in the sky throughout the morning. People in northwestern Russia can watch the eclipse late in the day, with a partially eclipsed sunset occurring over remote areas of Siberia.

Note: Because the eclipse is partial, you must wear certified solar eclipse glasses at all times, or else use a telescope or pair of binoculars with a solar filter. Failure to do so could result in serious eye damage.

    Partial Solar Eclipse LIVE | 29 March 2025 @ 5:00 AM

    The Stars Above

Fresh from the eclipse, on the evenings of March 30 and 31, 2025, a slender waxing crescent moon will float in the western evening sky. Watch for a lovely glow of earthshine on the unlit portion of the moon.

On the evening of April 1, 2025, the waxing crescent moon will lie near the bright planet Jupiter. It’ll also float close to the pretty Pleiades star cluster. Nearby is the Hyades star cluster and the red star Aldebaran, the eye of Taurus the Bull. Another rare chance to see earthshine.

On the evening of April 2, 2025, the waxing crescent moon will hang in the west next to bright Jupiter. It’s also centered among the bright stars Capella, Aldebaran and Betelgeuse. Plus the Pleiades star cluster is nearby. Golden Capella is the brightest star in Auriga the Charioteer. Aldebaran is the fiery eye of Taurus the Bull. Betelgeuse is in the constellation of Orion the Hunter. The Pleiades – or M45 – is a delicate open star cluster that resembles a tiny dipper.

Whitley Strieber: The Mysterious Connection Between UFOs and Music

    Published 21st March 2025 (1:04:28)

Quote There is a deep and mysterious relationship between UFOs, the close encounter experience and music. You see it most clearly in the many rock bands, among them Fleetwood Mac, the Ramones, Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane, Radiohead, and many others who have recorded songs based on UFO themes. In addition, performers like Elton John "I Have Seen the Saucers" and John Lennon have had sightings; David Bowie recorded "Starman”, and reported seeing UFOs “every night”. So, the question has to be asked: WHY?

Here’s a treat for people who aren’t necessarily smart, like me, but who enjoy hearing smart people talk.

I have some training in physics, helps a bit here but not much. This stuff is wild, in a civilized sit-down way. lol, enjoy!

    Quote Posted by Johnnycomelately (here)
F4: for fans of physics. Modern physics that is. Hilbert Spaces, stochiometric swamps, and the quest for a holy grail.

Quantum Gravity is imagined as a wedding band, between two truthinesses which don’t like to talk to each other: Einstein’s large-scale warped spacetime, and Schrődinger’s (and others’) spooky wave functions for all the really tiny stuff.

If I understand correctly, the “massive problem” seems to be choice of appropriate theoretical tools, which are like mathematical frameworks, to be able to define reality. Until now, Jacob says, modelling of (any) average value is erroneously conflated with actual averages as they occur in nature. Representation of spacetime is key to getting at/to everything else.

I’ve only watched once through, am posting it here to keep it close for if I want more looks.

This is a 15:40 section of a 2+ hr interview by Curt Jaimungal of Harvard physicist Jacob Barandes. The complete is embedded at bottom.

Johan Sebastian Bach Under The Stars: Air on the G String BWV 1068 Voices of Music

Every effort has been made to recreate the original ensemble that performed this piece. This includes using the original violins, viola, cello, baroque organ with German style pipes and wind chest, as well as the strings and baroque bows. A characteristic pitch of 415.3 Hz was chosen which is lower than the modern Concert pitch of 440Hz. This pitch favors the colors of the baroque strings and Continuo. Bowing patterns, articulation, trills and ornamentation are all based on German baroque performance practice.

They say one person's trash is another's treasure, but a chunk of 'rock' used to keep a door open for decades is a treasure by pretty much anybody's standard.

The 3.5-kilogram (7.7-pound) stone was found in a stream bed in southeast Romania by an elderly woman, who brought it home and put it to use.

Her discovery turned out to be one of the biggest intact chunks of amber in the world, according to a report by El Pais. Its value? Somewhere in the region of €1 million – around $US1.1 million.

Amber is tree resin from millions of years in the past. Over time, the highly viscous substance fossilizes into a hard, warm-hued material widely recognized as a gemstone.

In Romania, pieces of amber can be found around the village of Colti in sandstone from the banks of the River Buzau, where it has been mined since the 1920s. Known as rumanite, this amber is famed and prized for its wide array of deep, reddish hues.

The elderly woman who found this particular rumanite nugget lived in Colti, where it remained performing a function so humble that it was missed even by jewel thieves who once targeted the home, reports say.

After the woman died in 1991, the relative who inherited her home suspected the doorstop might be more than meets the eye. On learning what he had, he sold the amber to the Romanian state, which had it appraised by experts at the Museum of History in Krakow in Poland.

'Major disruption' has caused Arctic polar vortex to slide off North Pole, scientists say

A sudden stratospheric warming event reversed the winds that make up the northern polar vortex on March 9. A new animation shows the vortex also moved away from the Arctic towards Europe.

The migration could trigger colder-than-average temperatures in parts of the continent and across the eastern U.S. over the coming week, climate scientists say.

The polar vortex started wandering off course March 9, when its high winds suddenly switched from blowing west to east to blowing in the opposite direction. This switch normally happens each year, but it tends to occur in mid-April — meaning this year's reversal struck unusually early, according to a blog post published April 3 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

"For much of this winter season, the polar vortex has been strong," NOAA officials wrote in the blog post. "But like a true atmospheric diva, the polar vortex had one last trick up its sleeve, breaking down in a spectacular fashion and bringing some cold air with it."

The Arctic polar vortex is a circle of strong, cold winds that picks up every winter over the North Pole. The vortex is always present, but it strengthens in the winter due to a redistribution of heat from the tropics.

During the winter, the winds that make up the polar vortex blow from west to east. In spring, as Earth's tilt changes and the North Pole receives more sunlight, the direction of the winds changes to blow from east to west. The winds also become weaker as a result of less heat wafting from the tropics to the pole.

These winds are located in the stratosphere — a layer of the atmosphere that extends between around 6 and 31 miles (10 to 50 kilometers) above Earth's surface.

Last year, a sudden stratospheric warming event hit the polar vortex and reversed its winds in early March, but the vortex recovered. This time, "the vortex does not seem likely to gain a foothold again," NOAA officials wrote.
