A tiny thing in all the global wild weather news, but this short video shows the sheer destructive power of water. The section of highway here is just a couple of miles from my house.

The weather in Ecuador has been an extreme pendulum-swing from a record 150-day drought last year, to January and February 2025 being the rainiest two months ever on record.

It's too hilly where I am for tornadoes to touch down, but the flat lands aren't far away.
I saw a big tornado from a distance once years ago and it was like seeing a demon in the flesh. So ominous! )

This was a Derecho not a typhoon. Derechos are a section of a frontal system that moves faster than the squall line. They typically have hurricane force winds and they are extremely hard to forecast. Typhoons are tropical cyclones which are extremely easy to forecast.

That damage is heartbreaking. Mid 20’s dead, last I read, including another town.

I clicked into storm chaser Vince Waelti’s livestream yesterday, about 10 or 15 minutes before the tornado got to London KY. Vince was not near the area, but was parked by a highway and looking at live weather radar. Iirc, it was tracking eastward at above 40 mph. Said it was a big one, which it was; gave me chills.
