In a variant of the Sowing Doubt About China - But At What Cost? propaganda scheme, the New York Times makes the (somewhat racist) claim that China lacks the capability to turn talent into innovation:

The subtitle reveals the core thesis:

China produces a vast number of STEM graduates, but it hasn’t been known for innovation. Cultural and political factors may help explain why.

In a globalized world the innovation ability of a country can be measured by the number of global patents it files.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) provides data on these.

China, which the NYT says is not known for innovation, is by far leading the pack.

One might argue that China, with four times the population of the United States, should have innovated even more than that. But seen under this aspect the U.S. is also far from the top.

Per million inhabitants China filed 1.2 patents per year while the United States filed 1.5. But the real leaders here are South Korea with 5.5 patents per year per million people followed by Japan with 3.3/y/million.

Real world numbers are not sufficient to support the NYT's central thesis. That is why it barely mentions some. Its argument comes down to a political one:

Pavel Durov, the founder of the messaging platform Telegram, said last month that fierce competition in Chinese schools had fueled the country’s successes in artificial intelligence. “If the U.S. doesn’t reform its education system, it risks ceding tech leadership to China,” he wrote online. The reality is more complicated. Yes, China has invested heavily in education, especially in science and technology, which has helped nurture a significant pool of talent, key to its ambition of becoming a world leader in A.I. by 2025.
But outside of the classroom, those graduates must also contend with obstacles that include a grinding corporate culture and the political whims of the ruling Communist Party. Under its current top leader, Xi Jinping, the party has emphasized control, rather than economic growth, and has been willing to crack down on tech firms it deems too influential.

If that is indeed so why is it supposed to be bad?

Is it really healthy for a country to have Apple, Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet (Google) leading in Market Cap? The author fails to follow that question.

She instead misleads about the alleged crack-down:

Beijing has blessed the A.I. sector — for now. But in 2020, after deciding that it had too little control over major companies like Alibaba, it launched a sweeping, yearslong crackdown on the Chinese tech industry.

The crack-down against Alibaba owner Jack Ma came when he tried to expand Alibaba into the so called fin-tech business.

Juggling with credit and various derivatives thereof is a part of the economy that is better to be kept under control. The 2008 mortgage credit crisis and the following government bailout of private banks have taught as much. Pouring money and talent into a sector that is not productive and carries high risk is not in any societies' best interest.

In an aside the NYT author comes near to acknowledging that:

(DeepSeek’s founder, Liang Wenfeng, pivoted to A.I. from his previous focus on speculative trading, in part because of a separate government crackdown there.)

How can one conclude from there that China still has to liberalize?

But the best way for China to capitalize on its well-educated, ambitious A.I. work force may be for the government to get out of the way.

China's government planning and control over education and its economy has led to its astonishing rise.

Lacking the abundance of capital which OpenAI and other U.S. companies are spending on their attempts to monopolize their fields, DeepSeek had to innovate. It did so and has beaten its competition.

How less government intervention would have led to a better performance than China has shown is difficult to argue. The NYT for one fails at it.

Amid the escalating political and economic tensions across the Pacific, the 350,000 Chinese students in the United States are caught in the crossfire. The single biggest international student group in the world, many first came to the United States for its openness, but some now fear that America will soon slam its door on them as the trade war escalates. President Donald Trump’s administration sees Chinese students as potential perpetrators of espionage and intellectual property theft, and it has tightened restrictions for Chinese citizens at U.S. universities by shortening student visa durations for technology and mathematics students and intensifying visa scrutiny. White House senior advisor Stephen Miller even recommended a blanket visa ban on Chinese students.

The United States could be throwing away a huge pool of talent—and not for the first time. In the 1940s and 1950s, some of China’s most brilliant scholars sought a home in the United States only to be chased away. Perhaps the most representative case is that of Hsue-Shen Tsien (also rendered as Qian Xuesen), a Beijing-raised, California-trained scientist who co-founded NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL)—and created China’s space program when he was driven out of the United States. Many in the United States saw Tsien as China’s “evil genius”—an American-made Dr. Frankenstein who, as the 1999 Cox Report concluded, probably incorrectly, deliberately stole U.S. technologies for China’s missile development—but his exile from the United States was forced by a paranoid and xenophobic politics.

Communist China’s Forced Organ Harvesting Practices Garner Global Attention

"This month, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) reintroduced bicameral legislation targeting China’s state-sponsored organ harvesting. The legislation, known as the Falun Gong Protection Act, aims to address the Chinese regime’s egregious practice of forced organ harvesting targeting Falun Gong practitioners.

The act would mandate visa- and property-blocking sanctions on individuals involved in the abuse. It seeks to highlight the persecution of Falun Gong on an international level and emphasizes cooperation with allies and multilateral institutions to implement targeted sanctions and visa restrictions. Furthermore, it would establish U.S. policies for avoiding cooperation with China in the organ transplant sector while the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) remains in power.

In May 2022, the European Parliament in Brussels received testimony about this same atrocity. The testimony focused on the findings of an in-depth report by independent researchers titled “Bloody Harvest.” Experts estimate that since 2000, as many as 100,000 organ transplants have been performed annually in China, with the vast majority of those supported by forced harvesting through the complicity of Chinese medical institutions.

Following this testimony, the European Parliament adopted a resolution expressing concern over the continued reports of forced organ harvesting in China. The resolution called for the evaluation and revision of collaborations with Chinese institutions on transplant medicine, research, and training to prevent European Union complicity in forced organ harvesting.

In September 2024, the Australian government released a report responding to a proposed bill titled Migration Amendment (Overseas Transplant Disclosure and Other Measures) Bill 2023. In it, the government acknowledged a recommendation to institute annual reporting requirements related to organ transplants conducted outside Australia. It also acknowledged a recommendation to amend the Migration Act to include an express reference to “an offence involving trafficking in human organs” in the character test, which would allow the refusal or cancellation of a visa based on reasonable suspicion of involvement in organ trafficking.

Falun Gong practitioners remain a primary target of these inhumane activities. Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual practice combining meditation and moral teachings based on the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance. It was founded in 1992 by Li Hongzhi and rapidly gained popularity in China during the early 1990s. The CCP, fearing the traditional practice’s popularity, launched an intensive, comprehensive, and unforgiving campaign against the movement.

The CCP employs the “responsibility system” to persecute Falun Gong practitioners by holding local officials accountable for suppressing them. This system incentivizes meeting specific targets related to the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners, such as arrests, forced conversions, and propaganda dissemination. Officials who meet or exceed their targets are rewarded with promotions, bonuses, and other incentives, while failures are severely punished. The system’s emphasis on meeting persecution targets has created a climate of fear and repression for practitioners, who face constant surveillance and harassment.

The 2006 Kilgour–Matas report was the first to investigate reports of organ harvesting. It detailed allegations of large-scale organ seizures from unwilling practitioners. The 2018 China Tribunal interim judgment and the 2014 documentary “Human Harvest” further investigated and highlighted the systematic nature of the practice and the involvement of Chinese state institutions.

In March 2006, U.S. Falun Gong representatives asserted that thousands of their fellow practitioners were interned in 36 concentration camps throughout China. In particular, a site in Sujiatun, near the city of Shenyang, was a working hospital holding 6,000 Falun Gong prisoners, with the vast majority being put to death and their organs harvested for profit.

Since 1999, U.S. congressional members have made numerous public statements and introduced several resolutions supporting Falun Gong while criticizing the Chinese regime’s human rights record.

The pending Falun Gong Protection Act mandates sanctions on individuals involved in the abuse and seeks to highlight the persecution of Falun Gong on an international level.

If passed, the act will empower the U.S. president to impose sanctions on foreign individuals who are knowingly responsible for, complicit in, or engaged in the involuntary harvesting of organs in China. Those who violate this act may face a civil fine of up to $250,000 or a maximum criminal penalty of $1 million and a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

The act is drafted in a way that emphasizes working with allies and global institutions to highlight this ongoing targeting of Falun Gong, making it U.S. policy to avoid cooperation with China regarding the organ transplant sector.

In the meantime, several U.S. states have taken similar measures. On Feb. 20, the state of Arizona passed the Arizona End Organ Harvesting Act, which establishes insurance coverage prohibitions on organ harvesting and aims to discourage residents from seeking organ transplants in China. This follows similar laws already passed in Idaho, Texas, and Utah.

The continuous persecution of Falun Gong practitioners is an unforgivable human rights issue that has garnered significant international attention. By imposing sanctions and coordinating with the international community, the United States and other countries will continue to effect change in the way the Chinese regime treats its citizens."

Is the question, and they have to keep a robust trade relationship in dollars with us to be able to pay for their daily operations with the rest of the world, because they have a closed capital account. Their RMB is not convertible into anything, unless the Chinese party allows it to happen. They control that escape valve. So it's really an artificial exchange rate, closed capital account. Internal disaster. But they've made a lot of money by being the world's factory floor. They made it two ways, right? They've been the world's factory floor since 2002 and then they started stealing Intellectual Property.”

According to Lei's Real Talk, the CCP's claim that China's population is 1.4 billion is a lie.

Lei says the country's population is drastically declining, due to the "Demographic Cliff" caused by an aging population after decades of the CCP's "One Child" policy, plus her estimated 400-500 million COVID deaths since the end of 2019, which she says the CCP is covering-up.

On March 12, Lei said she believed China's actual population was somewhere below 900,000,000, noting four key pieces of evidence:

In the image above, Lei composed an Excel spreadsheet from official Chinese government data, which showed that 5% of the Chinese population aged 35-44 had vanished since 2019. This is the most economically-productive demographic of any population.

What's very interesting here, is that the Chinese government data for their 35-44 demographic jibes with the findings of the Society of Actuaries Research Institute's 2022 report on Group Life Insurance Excess Mortality, which revealed a spike of 100% in excess mortality among working Americans in the 35-44 demographic. This is only among those who had good jobs and whose employers actually provided life insurance to them.

At the time, former Wall Street securities analyst, Edward Dowd reported that these excess deaths occurred in the US during Q3 of 2021 through Q2 of 2022 and was confirmed to him by his personal source at the Society of Actuaries. But this was only the excess deaths among Millennials with good jobs!

Dowd's continued investigations, as of May 2024 revealed that, "About 33 million Americans have been injured, disabled, or died from this vaccine, in our estimate."

• 1.1 million excess deaths
• 4 million people disabled
• 28.6 million vaccine-injured people often missing work, due to chronic illness

Lei ascribes this contemporaneous spike of deaths in China, within the 35-44 demographic – in the prime of their lives – to the "COVID pandemic", however, Edward Dowd correlates the US excess deaths, disability and injuries to the COVID injections, which he calls "The largest global crime against humanity ever seen."

Lei has a background in finance and numbers and – as is true for all of us – the enormity of these crimes has been hard for her to confront.

In a video from March 27th, Lei stated that, based on additional data, China's real population is not anywhere near 800 million and that, "It's somewhere between 300 and 400 million," saying, "This isn't a sensational claim, but a sober examination of two critical factors: the Chinese Communist Party's decades-long manipulation of demographic data to project a false image of a massive consumer market and the catastrophic, underreported death toll from COVID-19."

Lei refers to a 2018 Russian study that estimated China's population at the time was probably between 500 million and 800 million. This was based on China's 1945 recorded population being 490 million, prior to the CCP's implementation of the Great Leap Forward, which resulted in the Great Chinese Famine and the subsequent Cultural Revolution, causing tens of millions of deaths (~60-100 million), followed by decades of the One Child Policy.

Lei states Russian experts determined that it was impossible that China's population ever surged to 1.4 billion, saying:

"Other Russian experts added-up the publicly-available urban population of every Chinese city and county and got only 280 million people and based on the traditional urban-rural population ratio of 1-to-1, they estimated China's actual population being around 560 million."

According to Lei's own reckoning, which includes data since 2012 of ~400 million fraudulent Chinese households and university enrollments being removed from government databases, that prior to COVID, China's population was between 695 million to 890 million.

By Lei's estimates, since 2019, China has sustained a catastrophic population decline of between 400 and 500 million, which is how she arrives at her estimation that China's current population is between 300-400 million, which is confirmed by another Chinese émigré YouTuber, Li Muyang:

The question now remains, as to whether a similar fudging of US population data has been perpetrated by the US Census Bureau – all the more confused by the tens of millions of undocumented migrants having arrived in the US since 2021 and shipped deep into the US interior by NGOs, the US military, etc – all on the US Taxpayers' dime during the Biden administration.

Lei: Since the outbreak began in Wuhan at the end of 2019, the actual death toll in China remains a mystery. The situation worsened after Beijing abruptly lifted the extreme Zero COVID policy in December 2022, triggering a massive outbreak.

At that time, crematoria and funeral homes across China were overwhelmed, soon after China's civil Affairs Department stopped publishing funeral and cremation statistics. As of today the authorities still have not resumed releasing this data.

Now, a new outbreak has been sweeping across China. since late last year hospitals and crematoria are, again overwhelmed. However, State media and social media are censoring the information, dismissing it as "influenza".

The Founder of Falun Gong, Master Li Hongzhi said in early 2023 that China lost 400 million people during the pandemic and another 100 million would die before the pandemic ended.

Many people brushed it off or even laughed at Falun Gong but now, the hard truth is coming out and people are witnessing it, firsthand. The Disappearance of a significant portion of China's population is becoming undeniable.

Across China people are asking the same question, "Where did everyone go?

(Roll several video posts by young people of what has become a viral trend in China, to describe the obvious abrupt population decline they see around them, saying that the usual influx of people returning to Beijing following the New Year holiday did not occur. Instead, the streets are empty, with a large number of homes up for rent, empty offices and no traffic at typically-congested intersections, with people asking "Where did 8 million Beijingers go?"

Shanghai residents are making similar video posts about the noticeable population decrease there and how the streets, the popular restaurants and malls are all half-empty, saying the city's famous nightlife has become much quieter. One post from a man in an A-line subway train in Shanghai is striking, with him as the sole person in the entire car.

We see similar video posts from residents and people in the real estate market of Guangzhou, the center of the largest megalopolis in the world)

Lei: What we saw is the situation in Beijing, Shanghai Guangzhou, the three Mega Cities of China and many people assume that maybe people in those large cities or Mega Cities had simply left for better opportunities in Second-Tier cities or they might have returned to their hometowns in the countryside.

Now, let's take a look at what's happening in the smaller cities.

One man in Suzhou remarks that the streets used to be crowded but now, they're almost deserted. He says he's heard similar reports from Shanghai, Yangzhou, Nantong, Wuxi, Changzhou and how all have fewer workers and laborers.

Lei: Recently, several local governments in Jiangsu Province released population data, revealing a huge gap between the number of births and number of deaths, raising public suspicion about the accuracy of China's official "1.4 billion population".

People are discovering that what the Falun Gong Founder said two years ago. it is correct. This is February 11th of this year, the government website of Jianyang District of Taizhou City in Jiangsu released its End-of-2024 Population Data, stating that in the year, the district had only 2,200 new births but 8,000 deaths.

Think about it: the number of deaths was 3.5 times that of new births! it also reported a population decline of 8.71%, over the the previous year.

And then, on January 26, the county-level city of Xinghua, Jiangsu also published its end-of-year population, showing 3,300 new births and 14,500 deaths. The total number of deaths was 4.4 times that of new births and the population decline was 10%! Can you imagine a city losing 10% of its people in just one year? Again, these are official figures, meaning that the real numbers could be much worse.

And then, a in Township in Sichuan, it's called Dazhou County, Miaoba Township, which is a Township that consists of 13 villages. Local residents revealed that in 2024, 500 people died while only 12 babies were born. Think about it the death rate was 42 times that of new births! Something is seriously wrong, here!

Such a shocking low birth rate suggests a significant portion of the population vanished between 2021 and 2024.

By the way the person who posted this said that now he believes what the Falun Gong Founder, Mr Li Hongzhi had said was right.

And what I want to share with you now is a Chinese user used Elon Musk's Grok 3 to explore the total deaths in China during the Pandemic and the AI's response was shocking.

So, the user wrote this post and he said, "Grock 3 is incredible. I just challenged it with a big question, using its reasoning function or Logic Function so the question is: "How many people in China actually died during the three years of the Pandemic?"

And so, here's [the Artificial Intelligence] Grok 3's answer:

"Attempts to indirectly estimate the population decline in Mainland China from early 2020 to early 2023 by analyzing changes in Chinese residents' consumption behavior during the Lunar New Year period. After analysis, China's population is estimated to have decreased by 150 million to 200 million."

So, another Chinese social media influencer pointed out that the above analysis based on consumption data during the Luna New Year period may have restricted the "logic and reasoning process", so he tested Grok 3 by asking the question in a different way. So he said: "Using China's consumption data, economic growth rate, unemployment rate and other economic indicators, estimate creatively how much China's population declined from 2020 to 2023 during the COVID-19 Pandemic?"

And after running its calculations it provided two estimates. It says, "A conservative estimate is that China's population decreased by 150 million from 2020 to 2023. A bold estimate: the population decline reached 200 million."

I believe the 200 million deaths is still an undercount because it's based on CCP's official economic and consumer data, which we know has been beautified and inflated.

If we must adjust 200 million deaths by normalizing the base economic data, the true figure may be between 400 million and 500 million deaths.

So it makes COVID the deadliest event in human history, I think – and I think it's getting more and more difficult for Beijing to hide the huge loss of human life and the truth will come out soon.

Now recently, Chinese social media was buzzing with the claim that "5% of the people born in the 1980s have died". The claim is that 1-in-20 people in their Prime Years, aged between 35 and 44 have died in China. It caused panic in people and forced the government to step in and discredit it. But numbers don't lie and they're based on official CCP data.

Someone compared the original birth data from the 1950s, '60s, '70s and '80s and compared them with the actual population in each age group today. so what you saw was the image of the Chinese post; how they did the numbers in Chinese

And I just took the numbers and put them an Excel model, [image at the top of this post] is what it looks like.

So, the First Column is the decade of the of their birth year the next column indicates their current age then we have the total original births compared to the existing population. In the next column, we have a calculated variance. This variance should indicate the number of people who have vanished or died.

The only explanation for the disappearance of these people is death – that's what the original study said, although some people may argue maybe immigration – but I don't think immigration is a big factor, here. I mean, there's no way tens of millions of Chinese have immigrated [Some American sources, however believe this is exactly what has happened].

The last column on the right is the calculated percentage of people who have died or disappeared. So, they found 5% of the people in the Prime Age of 35 and 44 is gone. That's the last row that that I highlighted in bold.

That's 1-in-20 people! This is shocking, because 35-44 – I mean, this age group is the most productive years in a person's life! How could China lose so many people in their prime years? That's shocking.

I think, equally shocking are the other age groups. If you look at people born in the 1950s, it's still troubling; people born in the 1950s, they they are now between the age of 65 and 74. 20% are gone. That's one in five people.

People born in the 1960, ages um 55 to 64: Nearly 6% is gone!

In the US, people in this age group are still working. They haven't even retired, yet.

In China, tens of millions are missing, so CCP's cover-up of COVID deaths and the Regime's manipulation of demographic data is the worst lie in human history!

When exposed, the whole world will be shocked and I think it would be a great Moment of Reckoning for Chinese people and and and there will be a Great Awakening.

The videos that you watched earlier; the two videos I played show us that we're not far from there. People are on the brink of figuring out that there aren't that many people in China.

Shanghai has a history with Nazis.

Until the Japanese took the city as part of their occupation of China, a large enclave in the city was home to different foreign populations. Germans, British and others, and notably Jews who had fled Europe. They all lived relatively peacefully, for the Chinese gov forbade them from hostilities on that ground(~150 square miles, size of a big Texas ranch).

The Jews had it rough by one nasty Gestapo boss, until a more level headed other one replaced him. But when the Japanese arrived, they took away all the other foreigners and left the Germans to carry on. Because allies.

"Lei's Real Talk is back with a report from a Chinese legal scholar living in Australia, Professor Yuan Hongbing, about a classified document that his sources tell him was recently shown to top members of the Chinese government in a SCIF-type environment, where they were not allowed to photograph or remove copies of the document from a highly-surveilled room.

Dr Yuan says that "People of conscience within the CCP system" memorized the key points of this documents, which are now being relayed, here.

The document outlines Xi Jinping's strategy of to combat Trump's tariffs that could ultimately escalate into an all-out military war with the US.

Dr Yuan says:

"In the private exchanges of the CCP's technical bureaucrats in the economic and diplomatic fields, Xi Jinping's attempt to unite Europe, Japan, Australia and other countries to kick the United States out of the international political circle is generally ridiculed.

"This so-called economic strategy, they generally believe that Xi Jinping's idea is a completely unrealistic dream. Its consequence is bound to repeat the Cultural Revolution…"

Moreover, Dr Yuan claims that, "Within the Chinese Communist Party's military, especially among the current senior officers of the Chinese Communist Party, there are generally two-faced people who are absolutely not loyal to Xi Jinping."

Regardless, Xi is still the Chairman of the Communist Party and once he determines it is time to implement "decoupling" from the US economy, the initial steps of his strategy call for:

• Bank deposits of Chinese entities in the US exceeding $200,000 to be transferred back to China or to other countries. Anyone who disobeys will be severely punished for treason.

• A sell-off all US$1 trillion in US Treasury bonds and US$2 trillion in US corporate stocks and bonds will be transacted in the shortest possible time.

Lei's Real Talk reports that many CCP members are anxious and unhappy about this, because many possess US holdings far greater than $200,000.

Recall that Trump's tariffs are reciprocal. Were Xi to simply remove China's tariffs, the US would reciprocate: There would be fair and reciprocal trade and that would be the end of it. This is not a "trade war".

However, Xi is unrelenting and insistent on calling the tariffs a "trade war" and his regime is instructing all leaders controlled by the CCP around the world to do the same.

This makes it very easy to tell which leaders and/or states are currently controlled by China. All you need to do is see is who else is dutifully parroting the Chinese Communist Party line about "Trump's Trade War" – and even suing the Trump administration over these reciprocal tariffs, like California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The only thing China or any other nation/state needs to do to immediately end this "trade war" is to remove their tariffs. A nation's unwillingness to engage in actual Free Trade indicates that their business model is based on unfairly gouging and incrementally destroying the US and its people.

Professor Yuan explains that Xi's pretext of using Trump's tariffs as the "cause" for his retaliatory actions goes beyond the Chinese cultural practice of "Saving Face". It is rooted in the simple fact that:

"There is an irreconcilable and fateful hostility between the two political wills of Xi Jinping's Communist totalitarianism and Trump's Make America Great Again…

"This hostility is objective and cannot be eliminated by anyone's will or through any political strategy.

"In order to realize his ideal of Making America Great Again – or from another perspective, to prevent the United States from continuing to weaken – Trump took the initiative to launch this tariff war against the tyranny of the Chinese Communist Party…

"The final result of this economic duel will inevitably be that the United States will win the final economic victory, and the Chinese Communist Party will suffer a heavy blow.

"The reason is simple. The economic size of the United States and its potential for economic development are far greater than the tyranny of the Chinese Communist Party.

Aboard the 'silver trains', China's retirees do their bit to offset Trump's tariffs

Beijing insists it will stand firm in the face of Donald Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods. It has been trying to reassure everyone that the country is strong and the economy is resilient enough to weather this latest storm.

But this week, Chinese officials have acknowledged the potential for economic pain as a result of the unfolding trade war with the US.

One option for policymakers here is to try to increase domestic consumption to make up for lost export revenue.

China has a massive population and, if they start buying more stuff, Chinese companies won't have to rely as much on trade overseas.

A key target in this endeavour are retirees with potentially decades of savings.

Now the government wants them to spend some of it - for the good of the country.

And initiatives like the "silver trains" - which are tailored specifically to older travellers - aim to do just that.

On board the Star Express, the cocktails are poured and the karaoke microphone is passed around, as retirees party their way through China's south-western Yunnan province.

The roast goose is being devoured with shots of baijiu, a Chinese white spirit alcohol.

"We have been working hard all these years," says 66-year-old Daniel Ling, who is travelling with a group of retired or semi-retired friends.

"The important thing when we reach this age, is to know what is the right thing to do - and that is to really enjoy life."

The initiative hopes to turn an economic problem into an economic solution by giving older people a fun avenue to spend more.

Families are not spending enough because they don't feel financially safe - the property crisis has diminished the value of their number one asset: their home. And growing unemployment has also potentially made their job less secure.

Add to the mix an ageing population and low birthrates and the proportion of retirees grows each year, making it harder for the economy to support them.

But what retirees do have is time on their hands and money to spend.

So now they are to be given more opportunities to splurge with special trains designed to take them to sites they might not normally visit - parts of the country further afield, which need a financial shot in the arm.

"The main places where the silver trains will stop are undeveloped rural areas or small towns with struggling economies," says Dr Huang Huang, a research associate from the China Tourism Academy who has been studying the potential impact of this plan.

"They will consume various products on the trains, but after they pull into a station, they will also visit tourist attractions and traditional villages."

In Baisha, the travellers stop by the modest street stalls at the bottom of old, two-storey, wooden houses built by the local Naxi ethnic minority.

One of them approaches a vendor selling barbecued strips of yak meat. They look tasty and she buys a bagful. The vendor's husband, who is also working at the stall, says this business is only a year old and that they need outside customers to survive.

All along this street you can get potatoes with spicy sauce, lamb skewers, fresh orange juice and the traditional clothing of the Naxi people.

This is a region where incomes are low and most young people leave when they reach a certain age because there are hardly any jobs for them.

It is also not an easy place for many retirees to reach, but these silver trains make it possible, with easy access to boarding and alighting, and with staff to help as well as extra medical support if required.

Shi Lili, 69, whose granddaughter is accompanying her, says the travelling spirit of her youth has been rekindled: "When I was young I really liked exploring other places by myself. Now I'm older, I have my family who can go with me."

By the end of last year, 22% of China's population were over the age of 60, making up more than 310 million people.

So, if only the smallest percentage of China's retirees take "silver trains", it can still mean millions of ticket sales. And China's railway authorities say they plan to be operating 100 routes within the next three years.

Such trips alone are not going to fix China's massive challenge with low consumer spending. But economists would say these moves are a step in the right direction.

Older citizens now have a much greater desire to travel compared to previous generations, creating "huge potential", according to Dr Huang.

"Given that China's ageing population is now a reality going into the long run - something which is unlikely to the reversed - we should find more opportunities from this rather than always turning it into a challenge."

Back on board the train, the silver adventurers are ready to crash out. And they can do so knowing that their big day out was - at least partly - for the benefit of all.

Then it's onto the next town.

In China, a country based in part on "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics," retirement is set at 60 for men and 55 for women.

There are exceptions. Some specialists, such as doctors DO WORK to older ages. Some/most folks choose to either volunteer in their communities. Many keep working with easier work. And many just go fishing, dance in evenings in town squares, do Taichi in the mornings and/or play cards and Mahjong with their friends. Shown in the video are retirees fishing in Beijing, a very common practice for retired men in the city.

But, if one chooses, pension begans at 60 years old for men and 55 for women.

We US citizens should seriously begin learning from other national systems. Our elderly are working 40+ hours just to survive in the states. And frankly, the people are getting restless in the US. The system isn't working for half the population.
