NASA's Perseverance Rover Hits the Mars Rock Gold Mine

NASA's Perseverance rover is reveling in a scientific bonanza on Mars after finding a diverse array of rocks that are providing eager scientists a glimpse into the planet's ancient history.

The Perseverance rover is currently exploring Mars hills, boulders and rocky outcrops along the rim of Jezero Crater, a dry, bowl-shaped depression north of the Martian equator that likely held a lake billions of years ago. Since reaching the crater's western rim in December of last year, the rover has focused its attention on the layered terrain of a tall slope called Witch Hazel Hill, which could hold clues to a period when Mars had a vastly different climate.

In the past few months alone, the car-sized Perseverance has collected samples of five rocks, performed detailed analysis on seven others, and zapped an additional 83 with its laser for remote study — the robotic explorer's fastest pace of scientific data collection since it landed on the Red Planet four years ago, NASA says.

"During previous science campaigns in Jezero, it could take several months to find a rock that was significantly different from the last rock we sampled and scientifically unique enough for sampling," Katie Morgan, who is the Perseverance's project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, said.

"But up here on the crater rim, there are new and intriguing rocks everywhere the rover turns. It has been all we had hoped for and more. The last four months have been a whirlwind for the science team, and we still feel that Witch Hazel Hill has more to tell us."

There are some spectacles of US decadence and decline that almost seem too on the nose – the sort of orgies of vulgar provocation or fantastic lack of self-awareness that exceed the limits of parody, so that if they were in a novel, you’d think the writer was laying it on a little thick. Among these is the all-female flight by Blue Origin, the Jeff Bezos-owned rocket tourism company, which on Monday launched a phallically shaped pod full of women – including the pop star Katy Perry and Bezos’s partner, Lauren Sánchez – on a brief trip into space.

The flight, which was promoted for months in advance, was touted as a triumph of feminism, a win for science and an embrace of the kind of expansive, curious human spirit of striving and possibility that once animated both. Instead, the flight served as a kind of perverse funeral for the America that once enabled both scientific advancement and feminist progress – a spectacle that mocked these aspirations by appropriating them for such an indulgent and morally hollow purpose.

Blue Origin itself is a product of state abandonment of space exploration. Founded in 2000 to fill the void left by the federal government’s effort to privatize the work of agencies like Nasa, Blue Origin has long been a pet project of Bezos, who was almost the sole funder of the company in its early years. Focused on tourism, rather than scientific inquiry, the company is best known for its slow technological development in comparison with its main competitor, SpaceX (another company involved in space tourism, launched by the Trump adviser and mega-donor Elon Musk); for the giggle-inducing obscene look of its rockets; and for its periodic publicity stunt flights featuring celebrities (William Shatner has also taken the ride).

Bezos’s Amazon donated $1m to Trump’s most recent inauguration, and he intervened during the 2024 election to stop the Washington Post, the newspaper he owns, from endorsing Kamala Harris; the Trump administration, for its part, just awarded Blue Origin a contract worth more than $2bn.

Once, Nasa was the pride of the American experiment: a testament to how a society dedicated to legal equality and passionate hard work could expand the horizons of human possibility. Now, Blue Origin is a testament to the corruption and circumscribed possibilities of the profit motive run amok. Space used to be a frontier for human exploration, a fount of innovation, and a symbol of a bright, uncertain and expansive future. Now, it is a backdrop for the Instagram selfies of the rich and narcissistic.

The Blue Origin flight does not make me feel like humanity will reach new heights of achievement. It makes me feel like everything that is coming is grimly predictable, tailored to the impulses of the richest, least responsible and least morally intelligent people on Earth.

Can a lava flow extend into the sky? No, but light from the lava flow can. One effect is something quite unusual -- a volcanic light pillar. More typically, light pillars are caused by sunlight and so appear as a bright column that extends upward above a rising or setting Sun. Alternatively, other light pillars -- some quite colorful -- have been recorded above street and house lights.

This light pillar, though, was illuminated by the red light emitted by the glowing magma of an erupting volcano. The volcano is the crossworders' favorite, Italy's Mount Etna, and the featured image was captured with a single shot during an early morning in mid-February.

Freezing temperatures above the volcano's lava flow created ice-crystals either in the air above the volcano or in condensed water vapor expelled by Mount Etna. These ice crystals -- mostly flat toward the ground but fluttering -- then reflected away light from the volcano's caldera.

"We always bring a little spice to our socials, but Wendy's has a ton of respect for Katy Perry and her out-of-this-world talent," Wendy's told People. Absent from the statement were the words "we're sorry" or "we apologize."

The fast-food chain's post even seemed to prompt Perry's fellow pop star and former friend Kesha to support the recommendation by posting a photo of herself smirking while sipping from a Wendy's cup.

There was no mission behind it... only to put his girlfriend and a few other high profile friends up there.... all I can think about it... is how the US is in such a volatile state...
People are losing their jobs... 401k... can’t afford foods... doctors.... and Bezos has all the money in the world and is doing this in his free time....

If they wanted to help make the world a better place... they could do so much... but they don’t… really it was "cringe" inducing... rich famous people playing astronaut while the world burns isn’t inspiring.....

Scientists Claim to Have Discovered New Colour

Scientists claim they have discovered a new colour. A team at the University of California, in Berkeley, had laser pulses fired into their eyes, enabling them to experience a colour no one had seen before.

The five people who have seen the colour described it as “blue-green”, but said that did not capture the full richness of the experience.

Researchers shared an image of a turquoise square they said best matched the new colour, which they named Olo, but added that the colour could only be experienced through laser manipulation.

Ren Ng, an electrical engineer at the university, described the colour as “jaw-dropping” and “incredibly saturated”.

He told The Guardian: “We predicted from the beginning that it would look like an unprecedented colour signal, but we didn’t know what the brain would do with it.”

But some scientists have disputed the find. “It is not a new colour,” John Barbur, a vision scientist at City University told the newspaper, adding that the scientists’ work had “limited value. It’s a more saturated green that can only be produced in a subject with normal red-green chromatic mechanism when the only input comes from M cones.”

The researchers themselves argued that the colour was all about the “experience” and that there was no way to explain it in terms of something we already see.




This colour provided by the team to the press was described as “close, but really, not even close."

Mr Ng described the colour as “basic science”, adding: “We’re not going to see Olo on any smartphone displays or any TVs any time soon. And this is very, very far beyond VR headset technology.”

Natural light is a blend of multiple wavelengths, which stimulate different areas of the retina to varying extents, but there is one part of the retina known as the M cone which is never excited by natural light.

The new colour stimulates the M cone by firing a tiny pulse of light to stimulate the cell, a state which natural light cannot achieve. The result is a patch of colour in the field of vision that is about twice the size of the Moon.

The name Olo comes from the binary 010, in which the M cone represents the 1, and is the only cone switched on.

In digital brush strokes, Jupiter's signature atmospheric bands and vortices were used to form this interplanetary post-impressionist work of art. The creative image from citizen scientist Rick Lundh uses data from the Juno spacecraft's JunoCam.

This image data was captured during perijove 10. That was Juno's December 16, 2017 close encounter with the solar system's ruling gas giant. At the time the spacecraft was cruising about 13,000 kilometers above northern Jovian cloud tops. Now in an extended mission, Juno has explored Jupiter and its moons since entering orbit around Jupiter in July of 2016.

What's the Oldest Known Recipe?





Cooking how-to videos, recipe blogs and mass-produced cookbooks may be relatively recent inventions, but our ancestors liked to cook, too. Archaeologists have found remnants of food resembling our own all over the world, from traces of burnt porridge on Stone Age pots to "beer loaves" of bread in ancient Egypt. Yet, for much of history, cooking was an art passed down orally and not often documented in writing.





So what's the oldest known recipe?

The answer hails back to one of the oldest civilizations, although their recipes look a little different from the ones we see today.

While it may seem obvious with modern-day recipes, figuring out if an ancient document is a recipe actually poses big challenges for archaeologists. According to Farrell Monaco, an honorary visiting fellow and doctoral candidate at the University of Leicester who specializes in ancient Roman breads, "recipes" as we know them are a modern invention.

Ancient instructions for making food often didn't have weights and measures the way today's cookbooks do; precisely measured recipes became common only within the past few hundred years.

In fact, what we now know as the "oldest recipes" weren't identified as such for a long time. When four Babylonian clay tablets arrived at Yale University in the early 1900s, archaeologists struggled to translate the cuneiform script they contained. The tablets, each about the size of an iPad mini, hailed back to about 1730 B.C., and were written in what is now southern Iraq.

In 1945, scholar Mary Hussey suggested that the tablets were recipes, but colleagues in the field scoffed at her, believing they must be medicinal mixtures or alchemical concoctions.

In the 1980s, archaeologist Jean Bottéro confirmed the Babylonian tablets were actually cooking instructions, but it wasn't until recently that any of the recipes were revisited.





They found that the tablets contained instructions for broths, a pie stuffed with songbird, green wheat, 25 types of vegetarian and meat-based stews, and some sort of small, cooked mammal. In many ways, the recipes resembled modern-day food from Iraq, with ingredients such as lamb and cilantro. But they also included some ingredients that might offend some palates, such as blood and cooked rodents.

Although one tablet contained more detailed instructions with measurements, many of the Babylonian recipes bore little resemblance to the detailed ones we're accustomed to today. One read, "Meat is used. You prepare water. You add fine-grained salt, dried barley cakes, onion, Persian shallot, and milk. You crush and add leek and garlic."

These tablets are the oldest known recipes, and there are also no known recipes that come after them for a long time.

"They kind of represent this funny little island of knowledge about culinary traditions from one specific place at one specific time," said Gojko Barjamovic, lecturer and senior research scholar in Assyriology at Yale.

To be honest... I found it to be a joke.... this Blue Origin space flight... a billionaire paid for a bunch of rich women... to go on the flight, that was completely pointless...

There was no mission behind it... only to put his girlfriend and a few other high profile friends up there.... all I can think about it... is how the US is in such a volatile state...
People are losing their jobs... 401k... can’t afford foods... doctors.... and Bezos has all the money in the world and is doing this in his free time....

If they wanted to help make the world a better place... they could do so much... but they don’t… really it was "cringe" inducing... rich famous people playing astronaut while the world burns isn’t inspiring.....

They aren't Astronauts or crew, they were passengers on a ride, the worst part is that these muppets received an enormous amount of media coverage compared to the Real Astronauts that were rescued from being stuck in space by other real astronauts, just beyond me.........................................RRR

This is genuinely interesting, about the successful pioneering space flight mission of Ham the Chimpanzee way back in 1961.

The title is accurate: Ham trained hard for 2 years, performed flawlessly on his flight (testing cognitive function in zero gravity conditions), and on his return endured 15 Gs when his capsule overshot its planned trajectory, also suffering a partial depressurization. Ham was a little stressed and dehydrated, and had a slightly bruised nose, but was happy to accept an apple as soon as the rescue crew reached him, discovering he was 100% alive and well.

Ham lived for another 19 years, and in 1983 was buried at the International Space Hall of Fame in Alamogordo, New Mexico, where visitors traditionally leave bananas at his gravestone.
