How Stalin Created Israel and Why It Later Became “American”

Without the USSR and Stalin's personal initiative, Israel would hardly have come into being. But since the Soviets supported it, how did Israel become pro-American?

Let's start with a brief background. Since 1922, Great Britain had a League of Nations mandate for Palestine. In fact, the country was under British control. Great Britain had to solve the problems of Jewish migration here and creating comfortable conditions for them.

But everything was beautiful only on paper. Jews were not accepted in Palestine. In the spring of 1947, Great Britain appealed to the UN, stating that it could not independently resolve the conflict between Jews and Arabs.

The UN put forward an idea for discussion: to divide Palestine into two states - Jewish and Arab. And leave Jerusalem and Bethlehem under international control.

Opinions were divided. In the USA, President Truman supported the idea, but the State Department rejected it. There was no unity in the UN either. The final word belonged to the USSR. Many were sure that the Soviets would oppose this initiative of Western countries. But the USSR unexpectedly supported this idea!

And already on May 14, 1948, the new state of Israel appeared on the map.

Why Stalin created Israel
The first version. Stalin was guided by purely humanitarian considerations and wanted to help the Jewish people who had suffered grief. - This version was shared by the 5th Prime Minister of Israel Golda Meir. Stalin was well aware of the plans for the total extermination of Jews in all territories occupied by the Reich. It is no coincidence that the future Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Gromyka, speaking at the UN, said that the Jewish people have the right to create their own state, since no Western European state was able to ensure the protection of the basic rights of the Jewish people and protect them from the fascists.

The second version. Stalin wanted to create a Jewish state in order to expand the socialist camp to the Middle East. This idea was warmly supported by the future first Prime Minister of Israel, a native of the Russian Empire, the legendary David Ben-Gurion. He openly called himself a Bolshevik and admired the works of Lenin. Stalin did not just help a convinced Marxist create a Jewish socialist state, but also sought to place his people in the leadership of the newborn country.



The third version. Stalin was preparing for World War III. On Churchill's orders, back in the spring of 1945, the British began developing a plan codenamed "Unthinkable." Churchill planned to throw 12 captured German divisions into battle against the Soviet Union, while the United States was to strike with atomic weapons. Soviet intelligence knew about these plans, and Stalin was preparing a symmetrical response.

A base for strategic bombers with atomic weapons could be created in Israel, as well as a naval base. Then the Soviet Union could easily block the Suez Canal. 80% of oil supplies to Britain, Europe, and the United States went through it. By blocking the supplies, victory in the war would be assured.



Military aid from the USSR
Whatever Stalin was guided by, the decision was made in favor of Israel. The Jewish population in Palestine was delighted, and the Arab population was horrified. Meanwhile, Western politicians were shocked by Moscow's position.

Washington did not know what to do. The White House could not openly oppose the Soviet initiative, because Jewish emigrants in America were extremely influential due to their finances and connections in the government. But supporting them meant becoming enemies of the Arab sheikhs and losing oil from the Middle East.

Meanwhile, while the UN was holding behind-the-scenes talks about the fate of future Jewish and Arab states in Palestine, the Soviet Union began to prepare at a rapid pace for the creation of a new world for the Jews. Immediately after the decision to create Israel, the yet non-existent country began to be surrounded by the armies of 5 Arab states at once. Therefore, they began with the main thing - the creation of an army, intelligence and police.

The Israeli special services, and especially the special forces units, were created with the direct participation of specialists from the NKVD. In addition, Soviet officers identified people with military specialties among the settlers, who, after being checked by counterintelligence agencies, were sent to ships onto which military equipment was loaded. Thus, after arriving at their destination, the tanks already had fully staffed crews and combat vehicles, and immediately after unloading they were sent into battle.

Meanwhile, at the beginning of the first Arab-Israeli war, the United States imposed an embargo on the supply of weapons to participants in the military actions. This embargo was in favor of the Arab countries, since large contracts had already been concluded and implemented before that, and the United States fully supplied the Arabs with weapons.

Also, by order of Stalin, captured German weapons were sent from Czechoslovakia to Palestine - machine guns, grenade launchers, cannons and even 4 Messerschmitt aircraft.

When the Egyptian tank column and Palestinian partisans were a couple dozen kilometers from Tel Aviv, all reserves were thrown into the battle to protect the city, including these 4 planes. The Egyptians and Palestinians did not expect that the Jews would have combat aircraft. They stopped the attack, and then refused to capture the defenseless city at all.

Why Israel Betrayed the Soviet Union
The economy of the Soviet Union was in a deplorable state after the war. Therefore, arms supplies to Israel were the maximum that we could afford at that time.

But you can't feed the people with cannons and machine guns, and Israel vitally needed financial aid. And when Ben-Gurion made a deal with his conscience and presented the United States with an ultimatum - either Israel receives loans, or begins to orient itself toward the USSR. And financial aid, naturally, was provided.

But both Israelis and Americans don’t like to remember that half a century ago the United States persuaded Jewish leaders not to declare Israel’s independence, and during the first Arab-Israeli war, Washington provided weapons and money to someone other than Israel.
