He landed at Simon Bolivar Airport in Maiquetia, La Guaira State, where he was received by Tourism Minister Leticia Gomez and the Vice Minister for the Caribbean, Raul Li Causi.

During his visit, Mitchell held meetings with Foreign Affairs Minister Yvan Gil and other high-ranking officials with the aim of strengthening cooperation, solidarity, and friendship between Venezuela and Grenada.

His agenda also included a visit to the National Pantheon, a historic site that is a fundamental symbol of Venezuelan national identity. There, Mitchell signed the guest book for distinguished visitors and laid a floral offering at the tomb of Simon Bolivar, the hero of South American independence who liberated five nations from Spanish imperial rule in the 19th century.

The main purpose of the Grenadian Prime Minister’s visit is to strengthen diplomatic relations and cooperation between the South American nation and the Caribbean island. In this regard, the authorities of Grenada and Venezuela will review issues related to bilateral collaboration in strategic sectors.

Both nations have maintained diplomatic relations for more than 47 years, characterized as successful and strategic, and based on reciprocity between both governments. In recent years, this friendship has been further consolidated under the principles of mutual respect and policies that deepen the bond between the two countries.

For its part, the Bolivarian Government, led by President Nicolas Maduro, has repeatedly expressed its desire to continue strengthening the friendship, brotherhood, cooperation, support, and solidarity between both nations.

    Text:

🇮🇳 India: The Emerging Saboteur Within BRICS

Recent developments at the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in Rio de Janeiro have laid bare a growing internal contradiction—India’s increasing alignment with U.S. trade interests at the expense of BRICS unity. According to Singapore’s Lianhe Zaobao, the failure to issue a joint communique condemning U.S. trade protectionism was solely due to India’s last-minute objection, centered around demands for “trade exemptions.” The move shocked many member states and exposed deep fissures within the bloc.

While Brazil, Iran, Egypt, and other BRICS nations supported the draft statement that denounced U.S. unilateralism and its breach of WTO principles, India deliberately introduced dissent. This disruption prevented a united front against aggressive U.S. tariffs—tariffs that directly threaten emerging economies and the very foundation of multilateral trade.

Western media such as Reuters confirmed that the draft statement had clearly targeted U.S. economic bullying, emphasizing the right of affected countries to retaliate. India’s obstruction at this critical juncture does not appear accidental. In fact, it coincides with U.S. announcements suggesting India may soon reach a separate trade agreement with Washington, raising serious questions about New Delhi’s loyalty to BRICS principles.

India’s behavior reflects a deeper trend: while outwardly participating in BRICS forums, it increasingly positions itself as a geopolitical swing state—siding with the U.S. whenever it suits its interests, especially in the realm of manufacturing competition and dollar-based trade dominance.

This is not an isolated incident. From rejecting the BRICS common currency proposal to remaining silent on U.S. sanctions and using BRICS as a stage for self-promotion rather than solidarity, India has become a growing liability to the BRICS bloc. It seeks the benefits of membership while evading the responsibilities of collective resistance to Western economic coercion.

As BRICS expands to include nations like Iran, Egypt, and potentially more members from the Global South, the bloc must seriously reconsider whether internal saboteurs like India serve the long-term vision of a multipolar world. Without unity on key economic stances, BRICS risks becoming an ineffective forum dominated by opportunism and division.

It may be time to stop pretending all members share the same values. A house divided cannot stand—and BRICS must act before the rot within compromises its global role.

Russia Provides Major Update on BRICS Currency Launch

BRICS member Russia is eager to launch a new common currency to challenge the US dollar globally. During the previous summit in Kazan, President Vladimir Putin showcased a mock-up currency, highlighting it could soon become a reality. The alliance is working on the formation of a common currency behind closed doors, and the development remains under wraps.

When Will BRICS Launch Common Currency? Diplomat Answers

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov revealed in a latest interview with Brazilian newspaper O Globo that the BRICS group would launch the common currency once all conditions are put in place. He said that when all necessary “financial and economic conditions” are kept in order, they would release the new currency.

“It would be premature to discuss a transition to a single currency for BRICS,” said Lavrov. “We can come back to the question about a common currency or a single payment unit for BRICS once the necessary financial and economic conditions are in place,” he added.

The diplomat also stressed that there is a lack of trust in the US dollar not just by BRICS but other developing countries who are sitting on the sidelines and would accept the common currency when launched. Lavrov explained that the US is solely responsible for the de-dollarization agenda that has gripped the world due to their foreign policies “which is attributable to the lack of trust towards the Western-led international financial institutions.”

Russia, China, and Iran are eager to launch a common currency and dim the lights on the US dollar’s supremacy. The next decade could seal the fate of the US dollar as many countries are looking to cut ties. The USD is now at a pivotal point in history where the chances of stepping down are higher than before.

Russian, Togolese FMs Exchange Congratulations on 65th Diplomatic Relations Anniversary

Sergey Lavrov's message praised the friendly Russian-Togolese relations, grounded in shared views on global issues.

Robert Dussey reaffirmed Togo’s commitment to stronger ties with Russia.

"Russia remains a symbol of sovereignty for Africa." Ambassador Evdokimov takes stock of 65 years of relations between Russia and Togo

In an interview with African Initiative, the Russian ambassador to Benin and Togo, Igor Evdokimov, took stock of the 65 years of Russian-Togolese relations and discussed the prospects for opening a Russian embassy in Lomé. He also spoke of the interest shown by the Togolese in the Russian language and culture as well as the role of Russia in the establishment of a new multipolar world order in Africa.

    – This year marks the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Togo. How do you evaluate these decades? What events have been decisive in the development of relations between our two countries?

    – The Soviet Union was one of the first to recognize the sovereignty of the Republic of Togo, proclaimed on April 27, 1960. On May 1 of the same year, the USSR recognized the independence of Togo and diplomatic relations at the level of the embassies were established. On August 9, the Ambassador of the Soviet Union, Djabar Rassulov, presented his credentials to the first president of independent Togo, Silvanus Olympio. In the following years, the USSR contributed significantly to the formation and development of the young African state, providing it with political, economic and humanitarian support.

Relations between Moscow and Lomé have taken a particular boom in recent years. The personal participation of Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé in the first Russia-Africa summit in Sochi in October 2019 contributed a lot. The first visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Togolese Republic Robert Dussey to Russia in February 2021 was also an important step in the history of bilateral relations. Then he went to St. Petersburg, where he had in-depth talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The head of Togolese diplomacy also led the country's delegation to the second Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg in July 2023 and to the first ministerial conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum in Sochi in November 2024. As part of these two events, a comprehensive exchange of views took place on issues of Russian-Togolese cooperation in the political, commercial and economic, humanitarian and other fields.

    – Is a visit by the President of Togo to Moscow to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Great Patriotic War possible? Is the embassy considering organizing commemorative events of this date in the region?

    – A transition period linked to the adoption of a new Constitution on May 6, 2024 is still ongoing in Togo. Currently, the Republic is passing to a form of parliamentary government. In the current circumstances, President Gnassingbé's participation in the celebrations in Moscow on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War seems unlikely.

Nevertheless, the embassy has prepared well to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory in Benin and Togo. In particular, in Benin, on the occasion of Victory Day, it is planned to organize a parade of the "Immortal Regiment", photo exhibitions and film screenings devoted to the immortal feat of the peoples of our country during the war.

    – Russia systematically advocates the establishment of a multipolar world. In your opinion, how do Togo and Benin perceive Russia's role in this process? To what extent do local elites consider Russia as a sustainable strategic partner?

    – In Cotonou and Lomé, the Russian Federation is perceived as a reliable and responsible partner that has demonstrated for decades its commitment to defending the sovereignty of African states. Russia is rightly considered a country that has firmly and consistently defended the liberation of the continent from colonial oppression. Today, Russia continues to help overcome neocolonial practices and shape a more just and multipolar world, one of the important poles of which will be the African continent.

Unlike Western countries, Russia does not set conditions, does not impose ideological models, does not interfere in electoral processes. On the contrary, we support the aspirations of African peoples for a multi-vector foreign policy and sustainable development of national economies.

I am convinced that such a solid ideological and value base will give an additional impetus to the progressive development and global strengthening of Russian-Togolese and Russian-Beninese links in all priority areas of bilateral interaction.

    – How do you assess the level of interest of the Togolese authorities, business circles and intellectuals in Russia? In which commercial and industrial sectors is Togo most interested in cooperation with the Russian side?

    – Lomé is actively looking for opportunities to diversify its foreign economic counterparts and, in this context, we see a growing interest on the part of the Togolese in establishing direct partnerships with Russian state-own companies and private commercial structures.

Although it is too early to talk about specific details, Russia and Togo want to implement joint projects in several strategically important sectors such as energy, infrastructure, transport and agriculture.

    – Is it planned to introduce a visa exemption regime between Russia and Togo? Is this question the subject of discussions at the diplomatic level?

    – The issue of relaxing the visa regime with a number of African countries is indeed under consideration. With regard to Russia and Togo, no specific agreement has yet been concluded in this area.

Nevertheless, such an initiative could be the subject of bilateral discussion in the context of strengthening political dialogue and humanitarian exchanges, given the growing interest of our fellow citizens in Africa, including in the field of tourism.

    – A Russian embassy should start working in Lomé in the near future. What are the practical tasks that the new embassy will face in the context of bilateral cooperation?

    – The re-establishment of the Russian diplomatic mission in Lomé will be an important step in strengthening traditionally friendly Russian-Togolese relations.

Priority tasks include maintaining regular political dialogue, broadening the legal framework for bilateral cooperation and promoting trade, economic, humanitarian and cultural links.

Particular attention will be paid to education, given that an increasing number of Togolese are looking for higher education in our country.

    – Last March, a concert of Russian musicians was held in Lomé in front of a full hall. Are new cultural events of this magnitude planned? How does Togo welcome Russian cultural initiatives?

    – The concert of the musicians of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow aroused a strong reaction from the public and marked the Togolese cultural life. The Togolese Minister of Communication, Media and Culture, the press officer, the management of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the heads of friendly diplomatic missions, journalists and our compatriots attended this event. It is important to note that the concert was organized on the eve of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory and the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Togo.

The 400-seat room was completely filled. The concert, which included masterpieces of Russian and foreign music, received the warmest responses from the professional community and the general public. This keen interest in Russian culture testifies to the great potential of Russia's humanitarian cooperation with the countries of the African continent. In addition, such initiatives create a positive image of Russia, contribute to strengthening ties between peoples, while demonstrating the uselessness of attempts by Western countries to cancel Russian cultural events abroad.

The embassy intends to continue working on the organization of major cultural events in the Republic of Togo. In particular, we hope that the holding of concerts by musicians from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Lomé will be a good tradition, as was the case in Benin.

    – What is the level of interest in learning Russian in Togo and Benin? To what extent do young people participate in cultural, educational and scientific exchanges with Russia?

-In recent years, the interest of young Beninese and Togolese in the Russian language and education has continued to grow. The Russian government annually grants Benin and Togo budget positions in the country's higher education institutions. For the current academic year, for example, 150 Beninese citizens and 86 Togolese citizens were beneficiaries of the quota, which corresponds to the record figures of the USSR era.

The opening in October 2023 of a Russian language center within the largest Beninese higher education institution, the University of Abomey-Calavi was also an important step. In September 2024, the first graduates of the course received certificates of mastery of the initial level of the Russian language. The second group of students is already studying. The issue of launching a similar center in the Republic of Togo is under consideration.

    – In the context of growing external pressure from Western countries and the media, are you facing attempts to discredit Russia's position in the region? How does the embassy respond to these challenges?

    – As part of a geopolitical confrontation for which we are not responsible, the West continues its line of discrediting Russia's activities in the countries of the African continent, including Benin and Togo. We regularly see attempts in the media to tarnish the reputation of our country and to present it in a negative light.

In order to counter these provocations, the embassy provides Beninese and Togolese daily with truthful information on the foreign policy activities of the Russian Federation. Active awareness-raising work is carried out through the website and social media of the foreign mission. We maintain contacts with leading public figures and regularly organize press briefings.

And it bears fruit. Despite Western manipulations, Russia continues to be perceived by the Beninese and the Togolese as a friendly state fighting for a more just world order, freed from the dictates of particular states and based on the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter in their entirety and in their interdependence.

    The EU's illusion of Relevance

    A garden without a gardener:

    Western Europe drifts,

    as the world rebuilds...

The defining trait of today's Western Europe is not unity or strength - it is the complete absence of a vision for the future.

While the US, Russia, China, India, and even Latin America actively shape and debate their long-term direction, Western Europe remains stuck in nostalgia.

Its politicians are not building tomorrow but clinging to yesterday's comforts.

The continent's political imagination seems limited to one goal:

Maintaining the status quo of a world that no longer exists...!

This backward-looking mentality has transformed the EU into what can best be described as a "terrarium of like-minded people",

an ecosystem where each actor competes for influence, all the while privately despising the others.

In theory, the EU was designed to create a shared geopolitical force...

In practice, that unity has been reduced to cynical self-interest and mutual sabotage.

Germany wants to preserve its economic dominance, sending constant signals to Washington that it alone is a stable transatlantic partner.

France, despite its limited military capabilities, flexes what remains of its armed forces to assert superiority over Germany and southern Europe.

Britain, once an outsider, is suddenly interested in being part of "Europe" again - but only to stir division and feed the fires of confrontation with Russia.

Poland plays its own game, maintaining privileged ties with the US and remaining aloof from Franco-German maneuvering.

Italy conducts foreign policy like an independent middle power, working with Washington and Moscow alike.

Smaller European states scramble for relevance, knowing full well they are pawns on someone else's board.

Brussels, meanwhile, produces a steady flow of bureaucratic theater.

Figures such as Ursula von der Leyen and Kaja Kallas make loud proclamations, but everyone knows they lack real power.

They are political actors without a stage, reading from scripts that no longer matter.

    continue:

The spectacle of European unity has become hollow - not only in appearance but in substance.

    This is quite consequential.

China, Japan, South Korea and the countries of ASEAN just issued a joint statement (https://asean.org/joint-statement-of...rnors-meeting/) in which they take a unified stance against "escalating trade protectionism", a clear reference to Trump's tariffs.

They write that their common "policy priority" is "to reinforce long-term resilience" of the region, which given the policies they detail clearly means building financial and trade infrastructure that aims at reducing their exposure to the US.

The statement outlines a comprehensive strategy to strengthen trade between the signatories, enhance local currency bond markets and reduce dependence on Western financial institutions (via, for instance, the expansion of the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralisation, CMIM).

Particularly notable is their explicit support for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) - the world's largest trade agreement that includes all the signatories but not the US.

All in all, Trump is achieving the unthinkable: bringing East and Southeast Asia together in an economic bloc that seeks to derisk itself from America.

    Text:
🇷🇺 In Moscow, the first day of Vladimir Putin's negotiations with foreign leaders who arrived to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory has concluded.

🤝 On May 7, the Russian President held meetings with the leaders of Cuba, Mongolia, and Congo, as well as discussed key issues of bilateral cooperation with Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

🇻🇪 The outcome of the talks with Venezuela was the signing of a strategic partnership agreement, including the development of military-technical ties.

🌏 These days, Moscow seems to have become the true capital of the world: nearly three dozen foreign leaders will arrive in the city through May 10. For the Russian President, this will be a “non-stop negotiation marathon”: three official visits, over 15 bilateral meetings, and a series of on-the-go discussions—all within four days.

🛬 At Vnukovo-2 Airport, planes carrying heads of state from around the world landed one after another. Initially, 29 leaders were expected in Moscow for the Victory anniversary. However, it was later announced that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev (due to events in his country) and Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith (due to illness) would not attend.

Despite this, the upcoming celebration is set to be the largest event in terms of participation in recent years, surpassing the BRICS summit in Kazan, which hosted 24 heads of state.

📌 During last year’s Q&A session, Vladimir Putin noted that such a large number of global leaders had not gathered in Moscow since the Kazan summit.

🇷🇺💳🇮🇷The second phase of integrating Iran’s Interbank Information Transfer Network (Shetab) with Russia’s Mir system was unveiled in the presence of senior officials from both countries

This integration an important development for providing tourism and small business between Iran and Russia.

Currently, NFC payments are available in the Iranian payment network, including small purchases without entering a PIN code. This functionality has also been implemented for payments through the Mir Pay app as part of the integration between the Shetab and Mir networks.

Russian tourists and businesspeople can make purchases at certain retail outlets using smartphones running the Android operating system. Holders of Russian cards will be able to conduct small transactions via Mir Pay on Shaparak terminals without entering a PIN, while larger transactions will require PIN entry.

Iran's main tourist centers, popular among Russians, were the first to be equipped with this technology.

Russia and China To Build a Power Plant on the Moon May 17, 2025

Bolivia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Egypt, Ethiopia, and South Africa will also participate in this international space project.

On Thursday, the Russian State Corporation for Space Activities (Roscosmos) and the China National Space Administration (CNSA) signed a memorandum for the construction of a power plant on the Moon.

“The Russian power plant will become an important contribution to the International Scientific Station on the Moon project, which is planned to be established by 2036,” the Russian space agency stated.

This memorandum is part of the package of documents signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, following a meeting held during the Chinese leader’s visit to Moscow, where he will participate in the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the Red Army’s victory over Nazi Germany.

At the future lunar station, scientists from Russia, China, and other countries will conduct research and test innovative space technologies. In April, Roscosmos Director Dmitry Bakanov informed that 13 countries have confirmed their interest in participating in this international space project. Among them are Bolivia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Africa.

“The moon experiences two-week-long nights – meaning there’s two weeks of continuous sunlight followed by two weeks of continuous darkness. The nuclear power plant will be essential for providing reliable energy during the Moon’s two-week-long nights,” explained Matt McCall in an article published in Centurion.

“The collaboration between China and Russia signifies a strategic move to establish a foothold in lunar exploration and utilization. By combining their expertise, the two nations plan to construct the ILRS at the Moon’s south pole, a region that’s rich in water-based ice and other valuable resources,” he added.

    🇻🇪 Resilience amidst siege

Venezuela’s supermarkets are 97% stocked. 90% of food is now domestically produced. Trade with China rose 52.5% last year.

U.S. sanctions were siege warfare—engineered to crash the economy, starve the population, and force regime collapse. They failed—but at immense human cost.

After the 2019 sanctions, oil revenues collapsed from $56 billion a year to just $700 million.

Earlier, the 2017 sanctions had already caused what CEPR estimates as over 40,000 deaths. Imports were blocked. The state's key foreign assets—like CITGO—were looted and stolen.

Millions were driven into migration by engineered scarcity—openly fostered by Marco Rubio’s strategy to weaponize exodus as a tool for regime pressure.

A textbook case of economic warfare.

But instead of surrender, Venezuela turned inward and outward: sovereign production at home, South-South cooperation abroad.

    No IMF, no surrender—just defiance.

Today, every full shelf is a verdict.

Venezuela didn’t just survive the siege.

    It outmaneuvered it.

The NED approved $6.6 million in funding for 46 interventionist operations related to Cuba, the highest for any country in Latin America and the Caribbean.

NED targets Cuba with $6.6 million in 2025

Cuban workers of the CTC, mass organizations, and visitors from 75 countries march to the Plaza of the Revolution in Havana to celebrate International Workers’ Day 2025.

Washington is continuing its permanent political interference campaign in Cuba, through the resumption of funding of active projects financed by the NED.

The U.S. government is lifting restrictions and restoring funding to the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and its foreign interference projects globally, following a temporary hold on funds announced in January. According to a statement on its website, the NED regained access to congressionally appropriated funds that had been unavailable since late January, allowing the agency to fully continue its mission to undermine, coerce, and work towards the overthrow of foreign governments around the world.

According to its website, the NED approved funding for 46 projects in Cuba—amounting to $6.6 million approved in 2024—the highest total for any country in Latin America and the Caribbean. Venezuela, Mexico and Nicaragua follow as the countries with the most spending by the NED’s operations, though it should be noted that the spending in Nicaragua and Cuba is significant, especially considering their smaller populations and economies.

Though $6.6 million was approved in 2024, the NED states that it “administers grants through multiple award mechanisms and timelines crossing over fiscal years”, thus other operations related to Cuba which had been approved in previous years, may still be active today.

The NED describes Cuba as “a long-standing NED priority” in a recently-posted overview of its operations in Latin America:

“NED’s strategy focuses on liberalizing Cuba’s closed political system by strengthening the capacity of democracy advocates and expanding civic space as an alternative to totalitarian rule. Key objectives include enhancing access to independent, pluralistic information to foster a more well-informed, critically minded citizenry; supporting freedom advocates to protect victims of repression and demand accountability; and fostering solidarity and engagement with Cuban pro-democracy activists in Latin America to build regional and international momentum for Cuban democracy and human rights.“

A separate NED publication lists 46 projects approved by NED in fiscal year 2024 with active grant agreements as of January 15, 2025. The list, as provided on the organization’s website, follows. Numbers inside the circles denote the length of the grant in months.

Despite that this partial and vague information has been made available on the NED’s website in recent weeks, the NED has a policy of not publicly disclosing the list of organizations, propaganda outlets, and opposition groups it is funding.

The government of Cuba has on many occasions denounced U.S. interference in Cuba through entities such as USAID and NED.

Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez has said that Cuba is well aware of the destabilizing activities by the U.S. National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and its interference in the internal affairs of other countries. Rodríguez noted that since 2017, the NED has financed 54 anti-Cuba organizations, while some quantity of people have enriched themselves by organizing destabilization and terrorism against Cuba.

Cuba has repeatedly denounced the use of USAID and other organizations presented as humanitarian or in defense of democracy, as fronts to penetrate and undermine societies, impose colonial values and customs, as well as manipulate or outright control local elites and the press, with the aim of strengthening U.S. hegemony.

In February, Cuba took to the UN Human Rights Council to denounce U.S. operations:

“Recently, copious evidence has been released about the practice of the United States government of dedicating millionaire funds from the federal budget, through entities such as USAID and the NED, to finance organizations, press media, artificial intelligence laboratories, and communication platforms that use the protection of human rights and the promotion of democracy as a facade, while responding to the political objectives of that government. This is a serious and relevant issue for this Council and its mandate, as it demonstrates the double standards and opportunism with which the issue of human rights has been used to subvert sovereign governments.“

The NED reports funding $40,951,769 in operations in Latin America and the Caribbean, spread across 262 projects. In addition to the $6.6 million targeting Cuba’s Revolution and government, another $9.3 million is listed as ‘Latin America and Caribbean Regional’, that is, destined for not one specific country but rather the region in general.

An incalculable amount of financial resources has also been dedicated to the creation and dissemination of propaganda and disinformation worldwide, about Cuba’s medical cooperation programs. Outrageously false claims by Secretary of State Marco Rubio were met with a major backlash from a long list of Caribbean and Latin American countries in response.

The United States continues to maintain a genocidal economic, commercial and financial blockade on Cuba which has been rejected 32 times by the UN General Assembly, most recently in October 2024 when 187 member states called for its definitive end, with only the United States and Israel voting against. The Trump administration returned Cuba back to the U.S. State Sponsor Of Terrorism list in January and continues to illegally occupy Cuban territory in Guantanamo with the U.S. naval base.
