    I have fond memories of Florida when I was living and working there back in the 1990s, and I've strongly considered returning -- to live -- in the not-too-distant future.

    And then today I saw this. Tell me this is a joke please, or is one in a million billion and could never happen again.

    I have a joke/theory that of all the other cultures in the planet the Aussies would thrive in Florida whereas others will struggle.

    Australia has all the things Florida has: They got intense heat, bugs that will kill you, creatures that will eat you, and wild child, loud ass humans. I think they're Florida's brothers/sisters from another mother.

    That gives the plumbing tool term "snake" a new, ominous meaning...

    This is why people hate cyclists

    Sure, cycling is healthy and wholesome and good for the environment, but many of the people who engage in this activity have a serious attitude problem. They've become a blight and a plague on the roads of Britain.

    I was tempted to put this in my thread of what would you tell your younger self but I'd rather not. Sometimes it's nice to put these self reflections out and have them buried. Anyway...

    I really ****ed up in my youth. I was obsessed with being an athlete at a high level and I didn't know that there wasn't a chance in hell of that happening. I just don't have what it takes. I'm better than the average person at football but nowhere near what it takes to go pro. But I was obsessed, I worked so hard and failed. It sucked. I also planned on joining the military but after my health **** the bed at 16 that wasn't an option. I considered fighting (this was generally pre-UFC days) but that didn't really grab my interest too much and after I was diagnosed with neurological disorders I figured I shouldn't be taking more shots to the head. I don't think I'd be allowed either, who's going to sanction that?

    I really should've been a physicist or mechanical engineer. My mother caught this at an early age, she bought me a science book and I really enjoyed it. I really screwed that one up but I guess it's just part of my life's story. Is what it is, no sense in crying about it. It's just that when I watch the rocket launches I feel a little pain of regret. That could've been me working on rockets. I like technology, I like science, I like building things that other people admire. I want to be part of the new frontiers, not building things solely to make a buck and/or bragging rights. I shouldn't think this way and I'll get over it. I count my blessings and I've got a great life now, but sometimes the demons come around and press my buttons. At the end of the day what's done is done, life moves on.

    Strat- Our labs are always looking for new talent and it's never too late to go back to school. Literally. If you have time and a way to do it, and actually want to, do! I have a friend who decided to start school at 47 with a family and full time job. It took forever, but by 56 she had her doctorate. It is possible and the beauty of taking classes later in life is you actually know what you want and can set the schedule the way you need it.

    • I use to change my oil and filter on my Toyota Starlet. There was a grease pit in the car port where I rented. When I unscrewed the drain plug, it dropped into the pit due to the force of the oil flow. And ultimately it was due to me not paying attention. Grrrr! I fished around in the oily gunk and decided I’d pay someone to change it from then on.
    Long long ago, when I was 19, I had a summer job working aa a porter at the local hospital. One of my jobs was to empty the swill bins. One day, my watch strap broke and my watch fell right into all the hospital swill.

    It was in there somewhere, but I just couldn't bring myself to search for it. I bought a new watch.

    Similarly:

    I went jet-skiing once in Mexico. I'd never done it before, but it looked like fun. It was actually more fun than it looked: I had a hell of a time. Except for one small mishap. After making a smooth turn to do another run, I opened the throttle all the way. Max speed! The wind rushing by was tremendous -- so strong, in fact, it blew my shades clean off my face. No ordinary pair of sunglasses either, they'd cost me $100. They flew into water where they promptly sank, never to be seen again.

    Edit: I assume they sank, I never went back to check.

    In keeping with Ulli's, "A need for reporting reality (never mind how mundane) ..."

    The "here and now" was 6:40 a.m. when posting earlier, standing in a puddle of water and shaking off the storm, swept about by wind and cold in between some of the most intense lightning we've had ...all the tiny birds here were just waking. Happy, beautiful week, Avalon

    I just came across this moutaineering report:
    In May 2023 on Denali’s West Buttress route, a 24-year-old climber from Colorado succumbed to severe high altitude cerebral edema (HACE) and high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) after a rapid ascent from 7,200 to 14,200 feet in just 36 hours.
    ~~~
    I do pretty much this every 2 or 3 days with my 12-year old dog Mara, surely the best and most experienced mountain dog in the world. I drive half the altitude gain (quite fast!), and we hike the rest. We do it all in a morning every time, leaving early and returning for lunch. (Maybe we're in better shape than I'd realized... )
    Quite a few times, when I lived in Denver, Colorado, I would drive from that "mile high city" (5280 feet) to the top of one of the nearby peaks over 14,000 feet ... just an hour or two drive in my BMW 530, back in the days when I (and my well paid, most excellent, engine mechanic) had more money and I drove faster, with nary a gasp from my car's engine or my (back then) well trained long distance lungs. Those were the days ...
    Sad. Only 24, and from Colorado, where he likely climbed a lot.
    When I asked google, AI said this:
    Quote Myocarditis and pericarditis can lead to pulmonary edema, a condition where fluid accumulates in the lungs, and less frequently, cerebral edema, swelling in the brain. Myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle, can impair the heart's pumping ability, leading to fluid buildup in the lungs (pulmonary edema) or brain. Pericarditis, inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart, can restrict the heart's movement and also lead to fluid buildup, including in the lungs.
    Wonder if this 24-year-old was actually covid-vax injured, but easily blamed on the high altitude.
    You may have a point Sue (Ayt). HACE and HAPE are not common conditions below 15,000 ft elevation above MSL.
    Strat- Our labs are always looking for new talent and it's never too late to go back to school. Literally. If you have time and a way to do it, and actually want to, do! I have a friend who decided to start school at 47 with a family and full time job. It took forever, but by 56 she had her doctorate. It is possible and the beauty of taking classes later in life is you actually know what you want and can set the schedule the way you need it.
    Thanks. My mom has been somewhat gently trying to push me in this direction. I don't know what I'm going to do but for now I'm going to keep going down the road I'm on because life is great. I have to do some soul searching before I commit to something like that.
    Unrelated to that but I'm going to change the way I post on Avalon. I think deep but I post shallow and that needs to change. My problem now is that I'm too wordy in a sense. I'm typing up a reply for a thread I made and it's 3 pages long. I like that I'm getting my thoughts out but I'm not sure how well it'll be received because it's just so damn long.
    Here and now ..just listened to a really funny female stand up comic. Which is quite rare, let's be honest.
    Her name is Leonarda Jonie, and she spares NOBODY. To say she is vigorously anti-woke would be an understatement. She's out there letting it fly, and not giving one single f#ck. I can't believe I haven't heard of her till now. The video heading is MOST BANNED COMEDIAN, and having dug into her background a little, it's true. Even in the era of Trump she's having some difficulty with the cancel culture brigade.
    She won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I view what she symbolizes as being far more important than her comedy. She couldn't have even existed a couple years ago.
    13 minutes long. The video poster offers his 2 cents in small bits in the beginning, which is annoying, but the rest of the video plays mostly uninterrupted:
    i just came across this moutaineering report:
    in may 2023 on denali’s west buttress route, a 24-year-old climber from colorado succumbed to severe high altitude cerebral edema (hace) and high altitude pulmonary edema (hape) after a rapid ascent from 7,200 to 14,200 feet in just 36 hours.
    ~~~
    sad. Only 24, and from colorado, where he likely climbed a lot.
