It might be lingering bashfully on the icy outer edges of our solar system, hiding in the dark, but subtly pulling strings behind the scenes: stretching out the orbits of distant bodies, perhaps even tilting the entire solar system to one side.
If a planet is there, it's extremely distant and will stay that way (with no chance -- in case you're wondering -- of ever colliding with Earth, or bringing "days of darkness").It is a possible "Planet Nine" -- a world perhaps 10 times the mass of Earth and 20 times farther from the sun than Neptune. The signs so far are indirect, mainly its gravitational footprints, but that adds up to a compelling case nonetheless.
One of its most dedicated trackers, in fact, says it is now harder to imagine our solar system without a Planet Nine than with one.

10th Planet Discovered

Astronomers have found a new planet in the outer reaches of the solar system.

July 29, 2005: "It's definitely bigger than Pluto." So says Dr. Mike Brown of the California Institute of Technology who announced today the discovery of a new planet in the outer solar system.



"The planet, which hasn't been officially named yet, was found by Brown and colleagues using the Samuel Oschin Telescope at Palomar Observatory near San Diego. It is currently about 97 times farther from the sun than Earth, or 97 Astronomical Units (AU). For comparison, Pluto is 40 AU from the sun.


This places the new planet more or less in the Kuiper Belt, a dark realm beyond Neptune where thousands of small icy bodies orbit the sun. The planet appears to be typical of Kuiper Belt objects--only much bigger. Its sheer size in relation to the nine known planets means that it can only be classified as a planet itself, Brown says."

"Backyard astronomers with large telescopes can see the new planet. But don't expect to be impressed: It looks like a dim speck of light, visual magnitude 19, moving very slowly against the starry background. "It is currently almost directly overhead in the early-morning eastern sky in the constellation Cetus," notes Brown.

The planet was discovered by, in addition to Brown, Chad Trujillo, of the Gemini Observatory in Mauna Kea, Hawaii, and David Rabinowitz, of Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut. They first photographed the new planet with the 48-inch Samuel Oschin Telescope on October 31, 2003. The object was so far away, however, that its motion was not detected until they reanalyzed the data in January of this year. In the last seven months, the scientists have been studying the planet to better estimate its size and its motions.

"We are 100 percent confident that this is the first object bigger than Pluto ever found in the outer solar system," Brown adds."

Telescopes have not yet revealed the planet's disk. To estimate how big it is, the astronomers must rely on measurements of the planet's brightness. Like all planets, this new one presumably shines by reflecting sunlight. The bigger the planet, generally speaking, the bigger the reflection. The reflectance, the fraction of light that bounces off the planet, is not yet known. Nevertheless, it is possible to set limits on the planet's diameter:

"Even if it reflected 100 percent of the light reaching it, it would still be as big as Pluto," says Brown. Pluto is 1400 miles (2300 km) wide. "I'd say it's probably [about] one and a half times the size of Pluto, but we're not sure."

The planet's temporary name is 2003 UB313. A permanent name has been proposed by the discoverers to the International Astronomical Union, and they are awaiting the decision of this body before announcing the name. Stay tuned!

7 Top NASA scientists say we actually have over 100 planets in our solar system. If the team’s version of planetary definition is indeed widely adopted it would greatly expand the number of planets in our solar system from the current eight to around 110.

Most of us grew up learning that there are nine planets in our solar system. Back in 2006 that all changed, when Pluto was demoted from being labeled a proper planet to its new classification as a dwarf planet, leaving just eight true planets in our celestial neighborhood. Now, a group of scientists says Pluto should definitely be added back to the planet list — oh, and that there are over 100 other objects in our solar system that should also be called planets.

Kirby Runyon of Johns Hopkins University headed a six-man team of authors from five different scientific bodies in preparing their own version of how planets should be classified. Their argument and supporting information displayed at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Texas.

"There's 100% no chance that thousands of amateur astronomers, controlled by no-one, are going to sit quietly if a large astronomical object becomes visible to the naked eye anytime soon.

There does seem to be a large object (a brown dwarf star) that the Controllers are very interested in, maybe somewhere round the orbit of Jupiter (ref Andy Lloyd and Bill Deagle), not visible to the naked eye and radiating in the infrared.

There are good arguments that this would be coming in from the south (hence the recent investment in the South Pole Telescope). The poster of the photo does not say when or where it was taken, but I assume it was in the US or Canada, very recently.

The thousands of amateur astronomers - many of whom frequently watch the sun (especially in the recent solar eclipse) are unlikely to miss something that was taken with a digital camera while watching a sunset.

This is almost certainly a sundog (an unusual but not infrequent atmospheric effect).

Here's a good image of the recent 11 July 2010 eclipse: there are no other large objects else there apart from the sun. Orbital mechanics would require that any large object like PX would still be there in the field of view... it wouldn't suddenly zip away and disappear."

Yep, I'm sure he is.

Not only would every amateur astronomer in the world be screaming from the rooftops, these phone camera images have been presented as 'evidence' for years now... which suggests that if there really was a 'second sun' there, it's clearly not moving!

Astronomers Discover New Dwarf Planet — and it Challenges the Planet Nine Hypothesis



A new dwarf planet named 2017 OF201 has been discovered far beyond Neptune. It sits in a region previously thought to be empty. Its existence raises questions about the structure of our solar system and the hypothetical Planet Nine — a hidden, massive planet hiding somewhere out there in the outer reaches.

The dwarf planet’s orbit is such an elongated ellipse that it takes around 25,000 years to make one orbit of our sun. At its closest, it sits approximately 6.66 billion kilometers away from the sun. At its furthest, it is a staggering 244 billion kilometers, about 54 times further away than Neptune. This giant orbit suggests that gravity from other massive bodies could be influencing it, possibly even a mysterious Planet Nine.

This theory suggests that a large, unseen planet, about 5 to 10 times the mass of the Earth, lurks in the distant regions of the solar system. Its advocates believe that it is large enough to influence the orbit of objects beyond Neptune. The problem is that the orbit of 2017 OF201 does not align with the gravitational patterns predicted by the Planet Nine hypothesis. It orbits in a different direction from one that would be influenced by Planet Nine. However, some researchers pointed out that the study of 2017 OF201 only considers one specific orbit of Planet Nine in its calculations.

The size of Pluto

Astronomers estimate that 2017 OF201 is about 700 kilometers in diameter, similar to Pluto, the former planet reassigned to dwarf planet status in 2006. Because of its elongated orbit, it is visible from Earth for only brief periods, making further observations challenging.

Planet Nine aside, the existence of this dwarf planet challenges the idea that the outer solar system has few sizeable objects in it. It is now likely that many more distant objects are out there, still detected. This would reshape our understanding of the solar system’s architecture.
