My dumb answer to that question is that — rightly or wrongly! — national borders are a scaled-up equivalent of how come if you lived in a rural area you'd have

1. Fences erected round your land to delineate what you considered to be your property, and to signal to anyone else that your family should be safe there;
2. Maybe security cameras as well; and one could also add
3. If you were wealthy and your property contained significant material assets, you'd have security guards there too.

I said "rightly or wrongly" above. Where I live here, I keep my doors open all the time and always maintain friendly relations with everyone around. It seems to work!

I chatted with my niece, she was very naive and asked obvious questions. In my opinion, this is a beautiful stage when children are not well-versed in the world, and it is natural to have doubts.

I chatted with my childhood friend, he became realistic and only talked to me about reality. He always told me to be more practical about what idealists do. In my opinion, he was deeply hurt by society, but if there were no idealists, we would not have everything we have today. Our reality seemed impossible to people in the past, but we did it.

I chatted with my parents, they are conservative and always told me to be an honest person and do the same things as them. In my opinion, they have fixed thinking and stick to conventions.

I want to say that different eras separate us, and this boundary is more like a cross-era communication, which will inevitably lead to conflicts, and unwillingness to communicate is also a form of self-protection.

Surely the entire world is the indigenous home planet of humanity? Ahh yes Grasshopper but that tribe that lives over the hill is unfriendly and has an appetite for rape and pillaging, we prefer to keep them away from our towns, bad things always happen when they visit, and they do not respect our churches and customs...borders represent the variations between our tribes, our racial and cultural differences.It would be very cool if we all got along and respected one another, but we do not. Also money/wealth has a lot to do with it also. Dumb answer, sorry about that.

The answer is that we should not need borders, and eventually, borders will become a thing of the past. You can already see that the world is moving in that direction. I am not a proponent of global government, but I am a realist and understand that it is inevitable.

Right now, borders work for the same reason Communism does not work.

There really is no such thing as a dumb question. But the process can make a person feel uncomfortable at times, thinking there are dumb questions. But when in a room, training or whatever, and the time for questions comes up; I'd hold my question because 99% of the time, someone else would ask it. It was very bizarre but saved me the discomfort in lieu of someone else raising their hand.

You might think there are definitely more dumb answers. I think the internet proves this correct. Some people don't realize what they do not know.

My initial post where I blabed my opinion, i deleted. I wanted to hear from others first. I for one like borders, I like Nationalism same as I like team in sports. Nothing more exciting than lets say, World Cup Soccer
Country against country in name, even though these teams are a mix of all players world wide. Its fun. Its exciting. The stakes are high Team against team, even city against city.

If you lock your doors, lock your car, you have borders. Small to the large, we need borders, Its our property etc. A lion makes a kill. It protects its kill for itself and its cubs.

Its idealistic to say no borders. You may not need to lock your doors in open spaces, where resources are shared among a small community who know each other etc. But in larger cities we need borders. Cause people suck. They are liars and cheats as well as thieves and rapists .

its a round globe we all live on and weather and climate vary greatly, which has over eons of time contributed to our differences in looks and ways. People from Africa built a life ,a way, a culture different than people from Alaska etc. There needs to be assimilation or someone may become your neighbor and eat your cat.

To be nationalistic and proud of it , does not say you hate others. Its like your family and then other houses and families in your neighborhood. it doesn't have to be the " hitler" thing. Im tired of that crap.

btw I enforce borders on my dinner plate. Meat over here, veggies there and so on. I dont throw my dinner in a blender.

Hi Doug. It seems that this thread is just about borders, and how people who question borders are dumb. Fine by me, and I agree with all that you say about the utility of borders - right down to the dinner plate.

National borders are an example of limits that we all have, the biggest example of “personal space”.


Riffing on your segregated meat & veggies line, I recently invented (pretty sure invented) a drink that only gets mixed in my mouth. Blueberries from the freezer (I have them with yogurt every morning now, portion daily to fridge to thaw), added to a shot of hot tap water, add some Drambuie and stir. So, the berries are still whole, I try not to break them. When sipping this deep purple Isle of Skye liqueur blend, one can get a few* berries each time, they do need (or at least imo deserve) chomping and that is the key to it. An AR triumph, very very actual.

* the berries eventually sink to the bottom, and I use a spoon to add a few of them to sips. Not cool, needing two hands to drink a drink, and also it often gets stuck in your teeth. But if you can get a Congress or Senate person to join you, please post a selfie on X, and drop my (screen) name. Might make me famous, and by extension you too (j/k, I know you are famous). I hereby declare copywrite, “Drambberry” ©️.

Am thinking of Beethoven who wrote great music after he went deaf. …I am technically colourblind, it put a limit on my pilot’s licence (I haven’t flown for decades), yet I see what looks to me like all sorts of colours. I’ve been told that I’m “high maintenance”, but I don’t think that’s so. There are critters that can see UV light off of plants and probably other critters, and they don’t brag about that. Point is, questions might not seem important, and hence seem dumb. But that informs the border question too, like who cares and who does not? One thing I learned about talking to people in bars, try to understand who I’m talking to, and tailor it appropriately.

I once had a housemate who was an artist with color vision deficiency — he couldn't distinguish red from green. Like many colorblind artists, he worked with a limited perception of color and relied on other visual cues such as shades, contrast, value (light and dark), and texture rather than hue alone.

We have Borders from the small and personal, our bathroom door, our bedroom door, on out to Country borders. I may be unaware, but can anyone tell me a country you can go to and just move in and start working, and start asking for that countries services?
What country can I go to, and take a job from those already there for a long time? provided they want that job and want to work. If so Id like to know. From my own experience, I know not Canada and Mexico.

so is the USA the only "unfair country" regarding this issue?

And Im not referring to colonialism . That damage is already done by the rapacious human and I have to deal with the here and now.

Im not sure of the info on the color blind artists. There is either value, the lightness or darkness of a tone, or the hue and color of it. any image, any painting can be turned to black and white on your photo shop or computer app and then see its relative values, without colors.

so I dont understand, without a clue, what would make an artist chose one color over another . Who decided to make the blonde light haired girl blonde? not light purple or light green?

will have to think about it. and def musicians such as Beethoven, once could hear and were able to remember and associate their piano keys and notation to the tones and music they once heard .

We have borders because we are experiencing reality (ie: ourselves ) inside out, - we've encapsulated ourselves (the vast consciousness that we are) within an ephemeral, gossamer membrane in order to locate, or position ourselves somewhere in particular. In such an experience ALL reality takes on this same characteristic. It has a skin, an outside edge that delineates it from other particularized, or discrete presences. We've done this in order to go into relationship with discrete life-formations which now visually appear to be exterior to ourselves. All this is 1) necessary, and 2) part-and-parcel of where our life-experience now resides. Necessary because this is where we learn to choose the manner in which we go into relationship, or otherwise bump up against other boundaries. Which are very much necessary to where we currently find ourselves. So .... I would say it is not so much a matter of whether the boundaries, borders, skins, outside edges should or should be, but rather one of choosing how you/me/we are going to approach them. In fear or in love - positively or negatively.

This is certainly the case in Canada, and I expect any country which allows legal immigration.

First generation Canadians work government jobs, in a noticeably high proportion, and (I think, but don’t know) those jobs are good paying and physically easy. Also medical industry, from my experience.

I worked alongside 1st gen African Canadians in treeplanting (BC interior industry; Rwanda, Niger, Uganda), and know of one and possibly worked with another same on oilfield drilling rigs.

My city Edmonton has lots of folks whose first language is not English. I have chatted with some of the different crews working on a huge (“infill”, monstrous) outside my window, and asked where they were from. Framing crew were all or mostly from Columbia, roofer said he (I think he meant the crew, because their unintelligible-to-me exchanges (“English”) from Bahamas. Couple days ago, 2 guys in a box truck, spray-foam crew, I warned about nails on the back parking spot, asked them too and said El Salvador.

Lots of south Asian semitruck drivers here, but that job may be one that legacy Canadians don’t want to do.

I am not in favour of our huge and growing proportion of immigrants from fundamentally different cultures, first because they invariable stick to their own like how Chinatowns have been a thing forever. Some ethnicities seem over represented in crime reports. And we have our own indigenous population way-over represented in jails, and many of their communities have potable water safety issues and drug and suicide issues. Homelessness is a big issue in every city here too.


Doug, please say what you think about your question. You obviously have thought about it, you don’t need to bait a facsimile out us co-commenters. Cheers.

RE: state of mind, reality borders (reposts)

Summer, 1988

I experienced non-physical reality. After we finished our form work, the Tai Chi teacher asked us to move to the stage, which was three steps above the main floor. As I stepped up, I experienced a moment where physical reality was suspended.

When I stepped onto the first stair, my foot sank through it by about three inches, and I tripped. I tried to catch myself with the other foot, but it also sank slightly a couple of inches and I stumbled again. Finally, logic kicked in and I caught myself with my hands.

The whole event happened quickly, but it also felt like it unfolded in slow motion like time had warped around the experience.

Summer, 2004

I occasionally helped my brother build his home. One particular day, we were laying plywood on the roof. It was hot, and he was tired and irritable. To avoid tension, I suggested doing something else. He agreed and asked me to gather the leftover scraps of 2x4s, 2x6s, and plywood scattered around the site.

At the time, I had been practicing moving “out of time”, a state where I could observe the body working in a natural, rhythmic flow. I held a space where there was no emotional attachment to the task or the outcome. I simply let it unfold.

When I returned after finishing, my brother was stunned. He couldn’t believe how much I had accomplished. It was a large pile of wood. Meanwhile, he had only laid down two sheets of plywood. As I write this, I feel tempted to say maybe three, because it seemed impossible for those two timelines to align within a typical 3D reality.

He asked, “How could you have gotten so much done?”

I told him, “I got out of my own way.”

Looking back now, I’d suggest that we were in the same place but living in different worlds of our own making.

Johnnycomelately/ I have given my opinion several times. look back at my posts. I like borders, and feel we need them for many reasons, personal, on a small level, on up to a large level. we all acquire and then protect our property, what we earned, however you want to describe it.
