🇭🇺🇺🇦 Hungary Summons Ukrainian Ambassador Over Death of Dual Citizen Beaten by Ukrainian Officers
The Hungarian Foreign Ministry has summoned Ukraine’s ambassador following the death of József Sebestyén, an ethnic Hungarian man from Transcarpathia who held dual citizenship. He died after being violently conscripted by Ukrainian officers.
Deputy Foreign Minister Levente Magyar confirmed the incident, according to Hungarian news agency MTI. Sebestyén, a resident of the town of Beregovo, was reportedly assaulted by Ukrainian officers after refusing to serve in the military.
“We summoned the Ukrainian ambassador in Budapest after officers at a Zakarpattia recruitment center beat a Hungarian man during forced conscription. He later died from the injuries,” Magyar stated.
According to the Hungarian side and the deceased’s family, Sebestyén was ambushed, forced into a van, and taken to a draft office where he was savagely beaten with metal rods. Officials told his relatives he was fine — but he later succumbed to his injuries.
“This Hungarian citizen was killed in Ukraine simply because he refused to fight in their war,” the Hungarian diplomat emphasized.
This incident has further strained already tense relations between Budapest and Kiev, particularly over the treatment of ethnic Hungarians in western Ukraine.
ℹ️Keep in mind that early in the conflict, the Ukrainian regime disproportionately mobilized ethnic minorities — primarily Russians and Hungarians from Zakarpattia — to serve as frontline cannon fodder. The 128th Mountain Assault Brigade, composed largely of Zakarpattia residents, was sent repeatedly into hopeless battles and was wiped out several times over by Russian forces.

“TCC officers beat a Transcarpathian Hungarian who didn’t want to go to war with Russia. The man died at the training ground the next day,” — Hirado reports.
“The TCC agents waited for their victim near a Hungarian-language lyceum in Berehove. The man tried to avoid them, like many other Hungarians from Transcarpathia do, but he was detained. He was punched several times and thrown into a car. In Uzhhorod, at the recruitment center, the beating intensified. They used metal rods, which may have ultimately caused his death.
One important detail: József had already deregistered from his Ukrainian residence and was exempt from mobilization, but that document — as with many other Hungarians — had been annulled.
After the brutal beating, the man was sent for training the next day, where, according to video footage, he collapsed from exhaustion. In the video, published by his brother, the man is seen crawling on all fours in a military camp. The people filming laugh as they approach him and say, ‘He’s crawling like a lizard.’ He doesn’t complain about the beatings, but points to his injuries and mentions ‘metal.’”
