‘Voices of the New World’ Forum Launches Global South Journalism Alliance

The announcement was made from Caracas, coinciding with teleSUR’s 20th anniversary.

On Thursday, more than 220 communicators, journalists, researchers, and influencers from 50 countries participated in the “Voices of the New World” Forum.

The event took place in Caracas, Venezuela, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of teleSUR, the news platform founded by the late Commander Hugo Chavez in 2005.

During the forum, participants announced the launch of the “Alliance of Journalists for Communication of the Global South” and issued the following declaration:

The text reads, “From the ‘Voices of the New World’ forum, Foreign Affairs Minister Yvan Gil denounces the kidnapping of Venezuelan migrant children in the United States.”

“People have the right to the truth — to live it, to tell it and to know it. Truth underpins fundamental principles and values for humanity, such as peace and equality. It is with this strength that the Voices of the New World rise to call for an alliance of journalists in service of communication for the Global South.

From Caracas, journalists, communicators, influencers and researchers — committed to the ethical, critical and responsible practice of all efforts to ensure truthful, timely and useful information — reaffirm that one of the great challenges of our time is to achieve the long-awaited goal of building a new global information and communication order.

This new, just and multipolar international order requires journalists and communicators not only to play a key role in the battle of ideas, but also to commit to promoting the narratives of the Global South with a decolonizing perspective — to tell the stories and realities of our peoples. It also demands the creation of spaces for dialogue that help shape a collective worldview of communication.

In advancing the Alliance of Journalists for Communication of the Global South, we declare ourselves in permanent action, committed to opening paths to truth and peace in every corner of the world, and to achieving informational sovereignty and respect for cultural diversity, the right to identity, and the holistic development of people and nations.

Faithful to the vocation that led us to embrace communication and information as a way of life and a public service, we reject lies, manipulation, disinformation and any practice that promotes hatred, discrimination or the stigmatization of our peoples.

Truth is an inalienable right. Nothing justifies lies or manipulation. Respecting and defending the truth, freedom of expression and the sovereign and independent development of our peoples is a duty for all of us engaged in journalism and communication with honesty.

Therefore, as journalists and communicators, we assume the responsibility to report truthfully, dismantle disinformation campaigns, and give voice to historically silenced majorities. We also denounce the hegemony of major media conglomerates and digital platforms that distort the realities of our peoples, erase our struggles and perpetuate colonial narratives.

We advocate for journalistic rigor, creativity, the strength of our cultural identity, trust in the future, the power of collective action, and systematic and continuous training to confront the forces of censorship, manipulation and algorithmic control by global digital platforms.

The Alliance of Journalists for Communication of the Global South is born as an initiative for coordination, content exchange, joint training, the creation of our own narratives, and the defense of journalists who have been attacked or targeted in conventional or next-generation warfare. It is a space to integrate ideas, proposals and actions based on solidarity, mutual respect and strategic cooperation among peoples.

We therefore call on media workers, communicators, researchers, influencers, academics and journalists to join this alliance, to strengthen alternative communication networks and to amplify the collective voice as a tool for truth, unity, diversity and dignity.

In a world increasingly shaped by technological impact on human life, we will promote a sovereign, autonomous and forward-thinking vision for the development of digital tools that foster liberating communication and equitable development for all peoples.

We have the capacity, the judgment and the conviction to build a new communication order. And we embrace the challenge ahead — to communicate a new, possible world, and to tell the stories of the Global South from our hearts, with awareness and with our own voice.”

🇻🇪 Global South media alliance launched in Caracas to counter “Western narratives”

CARACAS – Delegates from some 50 countries have launched a “Journalists’ Alliance for Communication of the Global South” at a forum in Caracas, aimed at countering what they described as Western media dominance and promoting alternative narratives.

The “Voices of the New World” (Voces del Nuevo Mundo) forum, which brought together more than 220 communicators, journalists, researchers and influencers, including a representative from Daily News Egypt, sought to promote a new international information order, defend truth as a right of the people and reaffirm support for the Palestinian cause.

According to its final declaration, the new alliance will be a “permanent space for action” to guarantee informational sovereignty, respect for cultural diversity and the integral development of nations.

“Peoples have the right to the truth. To live it, to tell it and to know it,” the declaration stated, adding that participants stressed the importance of truth in upholding values such as peace and equality, and proposed decolonising narratives that reflect the realities of the Global South.

In his welcome speech, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil said that in the face of the resurgence and domination of “media imperialism, our voices have to be increasingly stronger, more intense”. He called for an alliance between different platforms “so that we can tell the truth, so that our truth can be heard in the world.”

Voices of the New World forum, held in the Venezuelan capital from 29 to 31 July, included delegates from 50 countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Egypt, Iran, China, the United States, Spain, South Africa, Lebanon and Russia. The forum, held in the Venezuelan capital from 29 to 31 July, included delegates from countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Iran, China, the United States, Spain, South Africa, Lebanon and Russia.

Throughout the event, speakers addressed topics including media manipulation, fake news and the concept of truth.

Venezuelan communicator and deputy Gustavo Villapol discussed the influence of algorithms on various communication platforms, which he said could leave lasting effects on users’ minds.

Russian speaker Daria Yuryeva highlighted the diminishing visibility of news websites in the face of the growing popularity of social media. She invited journalists to adapt to “the new reality” by studying algorithms and creating alternative platforms with democratic usage policies to avoid “restrictive measures imposed by a particular government or several governments against a specific media outlet.”

Brazilian political scientist Fernando Horta argued that “the Global South needs to develop its own form of social technology and control over technological means to confront the information and communication attacks that affect democracy.”

Another key speaker, Ayanda Hollow from South Africa, highlighted the importance of digital sovereignty. He argued that without their own digital platforms, Africa and the wider Global South could not achieve fully independent media, as the existing social media and algorithmic landscape is controlled by external entities. Hollow added that for Africa to accelerate this path in achieving sovereignty, it would need to optimise working in Solidarity with the Global South.

Echoing the focus on technology, Nonkululeko Patricia Mantula also from South Africa, focused on the role of media within the BRICS countries. In a discussion titled “Journalism within the BRICS countries”, she and other participants analysed the potential of media in the bloc to break from dominant narratives and promote effective cooperation to strengthen cultural and social ties.

Mantula called for the creation of media networks free from “colonial narratives”. She argued that mainstream media often generates disinformation by building an erroneous perception of a country’s reality. Using South Africa as an example, she said it is often wrongly associated only with poverty and underdevelopment. She advocated for a journalism committed to the people that promotes a more pluralistic worldview and counters such misconceptions.

She also called on the international community to develop an information network that transcends language barriers. “Take advantage of the tools of the digital era to tell the story through languages. Unity is very important; you have to rise above the influences of social media to generate an impact,” Mantula said.

Jiang Yan, director-general of the Latin America Regional Bureau of China’s Xinhua News Agency, said in a video message that the fight against disinformation is one of the “common challenges for the media and think tanks of the Global South,” adding that unity was the fundamental tool to face current challenges.

The final declaration stated that communicators denounced the “hegemony of large media consortiums” and digital platforms that distort popular struggles and perpetuate colonial narratives. “To respect and defend the truth, freedom of expression and the sovereign and independent development of our peoples is a duty for those of us who dedicate ourselves to journalism and communication with honesty,” it said.

The alliance aims to be a network for content exchange, joint training and the defence of journalists who are attacked. Attendees advocated for informational rigour, creativity and continuous training to confront censorship and the algorithmic control of digital platforms, and highlighted the need to develop “sovereign digital tools” that promote liberating communication.

The forum also strongly reaffirmed its commitment to the Palestinian cause, denouncing narratives that it said make the struggles of oppressed peoples invisible.

At the closing ceremony, the president of Venezuela’s National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, addressed the issue. “The worst crime perpetrated on humanity in the 21st century is the extermination and genocide of Gaza,” he said.

Rodríguez added: “The objective of the Nazism in the government of Netanyahu is to strip away the human condition, to eliminate the condition of human beings in order to then subdue them as if they were beasts.”

“What a shame for all of humanity that Benjamin Netanyahu exists, it is a shame for all of us (…) it is a shame for us human beings that there is a being devoid of humanity who is not only a murderer, not only a genocidaire, but also a cynic!” he said.

Rodríguez also reiterated the position of the Venezuelan state, saying that “North American imperialism is a true danger to the human species.”

“Truth is strength”: GFCN experts at the “Voices of the New World” forum in Venezuela

On July 30, Caracas hosted the international forum of journalists from the Global South, “Voices of the New World“.

Its goal is to strengthen cooperation between media outlets, combat fake news, and support a multipolar world.

Global Fact-Checking Network (GFCN) expert Timofey V shared his experience of encountering fake news in the section “A country on the offensive and moving forward: the truth about Venezuela one year after the democratic victory of July 28, 2024,” in particular about how countries of the Global South are often portrayed in a negative and biased manner. He noted that Russia also faces similar issues on a daily basis.

Today, fake news has become a serious weapon that goes beyond information warfare, and opponents use them at the first opportunity. To combat false information, fact-checkers and journalists seeking to uncover the truth should be able to share their experiences within the framework of such associations as the GFCN, Timofey V emphasized:

“We in Russia are confronted every day with false narratives directed against our country. Any state with sovereignty and self-respect must be prepared to fight back against this threat. The world is not fair. But we can fight to make it a bit better. That’s why we’re sharing everything we know with everyone, and we’re stoked that Venezuela’s got our back in this truth battle.”

Mantula Nonkululeko, a GFCN expert from South Africa and CEO of GSQ Media House, also spoke at the forum. In her speech, she emphasized that without unity among journalists, analysts, and bloggers in the Global South, it is impossible to effectively counter false information. She placed particular importance on the invitation to join the GFCN as the leading platform in the Global South for information verification and fact-checking training.

“Access to GFCN’s training programs and digital tools helps journalists quickly verify facts and strengthen trust in their materials,”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also addressed the forum participants via prerecorded video. In her speech, she called on international journalists to unite in the fight against fake news, arguing that independent fact-checkers are needed to ensure objective coverage of world events. In this vein, Maria Zakharova emphasized the important role of the GFCN in developing objective data verification standards and effective tools to counter false information.

The forum itself became a unifying space for the joint work of 120 international journalists committed to spreading truthful information and countering the unreliable points of view imposed by some media outlets. The event was attended by politicians and public figures from around the world.

The GFCN was also represented by other experts: Ricardo Ortuno (Venezuela), OrlenysOrtiz (Venezuela), Roigar López Rivas (Venezuela), Christian Lamesa (Argentina), and Alexandre Guerreiro (Portugal).

For reference: The Global Fact-Checking Network (GFCN) is an international association that brings together experts and fact-checking organizations from around the world. It was established in 2025 by the TASS news agency, the ANPO “Dialog Regions”, and the “New Media School” to combat disinformation. Currently, more than 75 foreign journalists, investigators, and organizations from 42 countries are already collaborating with GFCN.

Look at the names, and the fact that the venue is held in Venezuela of all places. These are not the people who the world will listen to - at least not in the west...ever.

    From Max Blumenthal,

This is so dumb, it’s a bigger reward than they ever offered for Osama Bin Laden. This is all the more pathetic when you know it’s just cope, a bone for the anti-Maduro hardliners in Florida after Chevron got a new license to operate in Venezuela.

Back to core competence…another way to “legally” bomb everyone

Trump is preparing to bomb drug cartels around the world.

The New York Times reports that the president has ordered the Pentagon to use US armed forces to conduct direct military operations at sea and on the territory of foreign states against the cartels.
