“Chukotka has the entire periodic table”: Putin’s 24-Hour Alaska-Chukotka Sprint
Fresh from Alaska, Vladimir Putin landed in Anadyr for urgent talks with Chukotka Governor Vladislav Kuznetsov. “We don’t just have rare-earth metals—we’ve got the entire periodic table,” Kuznetsov emphasized, detailing the region’s unique tungsten deposits and Soviet-era zinc and lead mines. “The only missing piece is exploration investment—and major players are already at the table.”
The discussion followed a comprehensive mineral inventory by the Energy Ministry, setting the stage for dual-track development: state-led initiatives and private-sector partnerships. Putin’s lightning visit—spanning international diplomacy and regional oversight in under 24 hours—spotlights Chukotka’s critical role in Russia’s Far East strategy and mirrors the decisive tempo of his quarter-century in power.

Putin’s Visit to Chukotka Draws Attention of Political Analysts
By Telegram channel Sevmorput - news and opinions on the economic and political life of the Russian Arctic.
Chukotka has become the first Russian region visited by the president following his talks with Trump in Alaska. For Governor Vladislav Kuznetsov, this marks his second meeting with the head of state on his home turf in less than two years. The expected rise in Kuznetsov’s political standing is further bolstered by the fact that nowhere else in the Far Eastern Federal District or the Arctic has Putin made two working visits in such a short span of time.
We’ve gathered reactions from federal political analysts on the event.
Marat Bashirov, political analyst and HSE professor, believes this meeting signals Chukotka’s growing importance and predicts more frequent Putin visits to the Far East:
“The president’s latest visit to Chukotka—his second in 19 months—has firmly cemented the region’s role as one of the key strategic territories in Russia’s pivot to the Far East. Paradoxically, this pivot is no longer just about China—it’s also about our relations with the U.S.”
Pavel Danilin, political analyst, notes that the president’s trip to Chukotka immediately after Alaska is a move aimed not only at a domestic audience but also at the American and global political establishment:
“What sticks in memory is the sequence. Putin’s visit to Chukotka after Alaska is far more than just a routine trip. Chukotka is home to the Baimsky Mining and Processing Plant and the Pyrkakai stockworks (tin deposits). Baimka is one of the world’s largest copper-gold deposits. Its development isn’t just a regional project—it’s a matter of Russia’s long-term economic security and technological sovereignty for decades to come.”
Daria Kislitsyna, political analyst and head of the regional affairs department at EISI, argues that Chukotka is in the spotlight at the highest level due to Governor Kuznetsov’s effectiveness in implementing federal priorities:
“The head of state’s latest visit (his second since Kuznetsov took charge of Chukotka) is not just a working trip—it’s a sign of trust in the governor’s team and confirmation that Chukotka’s development is a federal priority. New challenges lie ahead, all in the interests of the region’s residents.”
Readovka — After the meeting in Alaska, Putin visited Chukotka—the governor informed the president about new family support measures and reported on the fulfillment of previous 2024 directives.
Vladimir Putin visited the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug for the second time in 19 months, immediately following negotiations with Trump in Alaska. The head of state met with Governor Vladislav Kuznetsov. The governor reported that the region has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. Additionally, in Chukotka, families can receive 1 million rubles to pay off their mortgage upon the birth of a third or subsequent child. A regional maternity capital of 193.5 thousand rubles is also provided for each third or subsequent child born since January 1 of this year.
In January 2024, Vladimir Putin issued a series of directives to ministries and agencies following his working trip. In the region, a district hospital has been built, and another has been reconstructed. Hydrofoils were purchased for crossing the Anadyr Estuary, offering transportation at subsidized rates. Funds were also allocated for geological exploration, which has contributed to the development of the region's mining industry, Governor Kuznetsov reported.
