I seem to have shaken the virus off, Johnny. The flu-like symptoms were very mild, barely got a sore throat and my system seemed to shrug it off easily. It was just the memory-loss/being in a daze thing that was concerning. But I seem to have survived it. Thanks for the encouragement!

It used to be that for a Chinese twenty-something to contemplate not getting married and having kids, was just not feasible. They would be harassed to death by their parents, especially once they started approaching their late 20s. Their parents would start setting up dates for them, in conspiracy with other families they knew with the same problem with their own child, of the opposite sex.

In the last two or three years, suddenly not getting married, and not wanting to get married, or getting married and not having kids, has started to become much more acceptable, it seems to me. A lot of the Chinese I speak to now say that they have no intention of getting married. Something has definitely changed in the mindset over the last three years or so.

Default Re: What's happening in China?

Two years ago I was staying in a city in southern China. I don't want to say which city, because I enjoyed that city so much, and the free-spiritedness of the people there, that I don't want to do anything to tempt fate against them (or, more likely, tempt CCP action against them). The city wouldn't let me leave - more on that in a bit.

But what I mainly wanted to narrate is something I witnessed one day, as I sat at my favourite coffee shop watching the world go by. It was on a nice little street in a lane, that had two bookstores, and artsy shops. Artists and writers and musicians congregated around that area. The people there were not like typical Chinese at all. Curious and creative, uninterested in careers and money. And they mostly hated the government, and would occasionally tell me so, which was uncharacteristic of Chinese people.

The two bookstores were great. I spent far too much money in there, given that it takes me weeks and weeks to read a book in Chinese. One day, a small army of police and some self-important looking government people, turned up on the street and closed the two bookstores, without prior warning. They emptied out every single book from both bookstores, and took them away. Why? Because they could. Basically no other reason. The bookstores didn't seem to be selling books that were critical of the regime or anything like that.

The bookstores weren't even being run for profit, it seemed to me. The owners were probably running at a loss. One of the two bookstores operated as a free library. You could buy their books, but they didn't mind at all if you just sat in the store and read them without paying, and they offered free self-service tea. It was more of a community centre than a bookstore. People would congregate there in the evening, and play games and sometimes sing and play musical instruments.

I managed to photograph the scene (though I won't post those photos here now). Needless to say, the main effect that had on the locals was just to increase their hatred of the government.

Anyway, I said above that the city wouldn't let me leave. I noticed while I was there that there were a lot of ghosts around. I was followed by ghosts on quite a number of occasions. At the time, I was struggling with my health, and one reason for going there was for a rest. On the day that I was supposed to leave, I dragged my suitcase in the early morning to get my taxi. It wasn't yet light. The place where I was staying couldn't easily be accessed by taxis, so I had to walk some way to find the taxi. To cut a long story short, I ended up falling 2 metres down into a gully, doing a somersault and landing on concrete. I almost broke my pelvis. It was very painful indeed, and I thought I was going to die in the gully. This was probably the most painful, unpleasant experience I've had this lifetime. I managed to contact my wife, who managed to find me and call an ambulance.

I wasn't in hospital for long - God knows how I managed to get sent home by the doctors after several hours, with a plastered leg and barely able to move around. I was pretty immobile once I got home. I managed to crawl upstairs to my bedroom, with my wife's help. But the weeks of immobility led to a Deep Vein Thrombosis in my leg, which in turn led to a pulmonary embolism. That was when I ended up in hospital for weeks. A god-awful experience. I ended up in intensive care, on a ventilator. What awful things those ventilators are. It would try to breathe for me, but its breathing rate was not the same as my own natural breathing rate, so my natural breathing would jar up against the machine's breathing after every breath. I had to beg them to take me off the ventilator, just so I could get a night's sleep. So they'd put me on a normal oxygen mask, and my blood oxygen level would slowly crash, and they'd put me back on the ventilator.

One day, I suddenly felt I was dying. Couldn't breathe properly. I felt so dreadful, that I was willing my body to die. But it wouldn't. I was stuck in this painful limbo between living and dead, in extreme pain. Awful. It turned out that my body was trying to puke. Presumably that was affecting my ability to breathe.

Since then, I've had Deep Vein Thrombosis several times, and I've ended up in hospital a few times (I've lost count of how many times), and it's led to pulmonary embolism a couple of times. One time I ended up with pneumonia, pleurisy, pulmonary embolism and DVT all at once. The funny thing is, at the time, it was in the cold of winter, and a friend of mine had ordered me a bunch of philosophy books. I was ill, but I dragged myself out in the dead of night to meet my friend, have a smoke and a coffee, and get my books from him. I collapsed in the middle of the street, and said to my friend, "Go and get my books. I'll wait here." Then I dragged my body home. As my wife was calling an ambulance, I was saying to her, "yeah, but I need to have a look at my books before the ambulance arrives, 'cos I won't be able to read them in intensive care." I didn't give a rat's arse about the fact I was probably dying - I just wanted to see my books, despite being in pain. Isn't that bizarre?

Anyway, I probably shouldn't have mixed this post up with the China stuff above, but I couldn't think of a natural way to separate the two. The strange thing is, recently, I have been in the best spiritual condition that I have ever been in during this whole lifetime, whilst being in the worst physical condition. The two are not causally related, I don't think. I used to assume that being in good spiritual condition would tend to put you into good physical condition too, but my recent experience has been that the two are only tenuously related.

Sorry if this post is mumbo-jumbo.

Nobel Prize Economist Predicted China’s Collapse. Xi Proved Him Right

"China’s economy isn’t just slowing—it’s rotting from the top. In this deep-dive, I unpack Nobel Prize–winning economist Daron Acemoglu’s argument (“China’s economy is rotting from the head”) and show how it’s playing out today: property implosion, local-government debt, youth unemployment, collapsing confidence, and a system that rewards loyalty over innovation. I draw on the Why Nations Fail framework—inclusive vs. extractive institutions—to explain why short-term “miracles” built on centralized power eventually stall.
See: Daron Acemoglu, "China’s Economy Is Rotting from the Head",
    https://www.project-syndicate.org/co...emoglu-2022-10

We look at how extractive politics + extractive economics (one-man rule, no accountability, patronage markets) choke risk-taking, freeze entrepreneurship, and turn banks into lifelines for zombie firms. From zero-COVID whiplash to tech and tutoring crackdowns to “common prosperity” squeezes, Beijing has prioritized control over growth—and the bill is due. We also dig into demographics (aging population, falling births), capital flight, ghost cities, and why “concrete ≠ prosperity.”

This is not about lazy workers or weak founders—China’s talent is real. The problem is the operating system: innovation by permission slip, profits by proximity, and propaganda over feedback. I compare China’s path with South Korea/Taiwan’s transition toward inclusion and the Soviet Union’s double-extractive collapse to show the forks ahead: stagnation or crack-up.

If you care about geopolitics, markets, and the future of Asia, this episode connects the dots—why the rot starts at the top, how it drips through the economy, and what it means for Taiwan, supply chains, and global risk."

Three Gorges Dam Nightmare: Cracks Exposed, China on Edge
    China Undercover
    75.7K subscribers
    Aug 27, 2025

(The "disaster clock" is speeding up...)

"In 2025, before China had even entered its official flood season in July, disaster was already sweeping across the nation. From the smoky industrial belts of the north to the farmlands of the south, unrelenting rains merged with swollen rivers, turning what should have been routine monsoon challenges into a nationwide nightmare. The waters didn’t burst in a single wave—they crept forward day after day, tightening their grip until whole provinces were drowning.
By July 4, Chinese officials admitted that 329 rivers had surged past the danger line. But behind this statistic lies a far darker truth: this crisis is not simply nature’s wrath—it’s the result of human arrogance. And at the very heart of it stands the most controversial symbol of modern China—the Three Gorges Dam.
Once glorified as the Communist Party’s ultimate triumph of engineering, the dam is now seen as its Achilles’ heel. When it was inaugurated in 2003, state media boasted that it could withstand a “once-in-a-thousand-year” flood. Later, that promise was quietly downgraded to “once in a century.” Now, as red alerts blare across central China, even that watered-down claim sounds like a cruel joke. The cracks in the illusion—both metaphorical and real—are widening. "

Significant comment, which explains a LOT:
    Quote @MichaelRobertson-i8f
I retired from the LADWP in 2016 with the last 17 years spent in the Owen’s Valley as an Electric Station Operator. Back in those days I read an article about damming up the largest river in China, it displaced 150 million people from the areas that were going to be underwater. The One thing was that landfills included not only garbage but China didn’t separate Biological and Nuclear Waste in their landfills and putting them underwater would eventually cause both the nuclear and biological waste eventually contaminated the entire water supply, that’s why the concrete along with the generators themselves would eventually Fail, along with the water that floods after the dam failed you have to realize all of these waters are contaminated with nuclear and biological waste . Probably the single biggest toxic waste development in the History of the Human Race .

At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in September 2025, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed a new global governance system based on fairness, justice, and multilateralism, which he presented as an alternative to what Beijing describes as the "bullying practices" of the United States and its allies. While not directly naming the U.S., China frequently uses terms like "hegemonism" and "Cold War mentality" to criticize Washington's foreign policy.
Key principles of China's proposed global governance system include:
A "Community of Shared Human Destiny": China's vision promotes a world where nations work together for common goals through "extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits".
Sovereign equality: China argues that all nations, regardless of size or strength, should be equal participants in global governance. It promotes greater representation for developing countries in international decision-making.
True multilateralism: Instead of unilateralism or a "bloc-based confrontation," China advocates for multilateralism, emphasizing the central role of the United Nations.
Fairness and justice: Xi specifically called for a "more just and equitable global governance system," asserting that international law must be applied universally without double standards.
"Win-win" cooperation: A long-standing principle of Chinese foreign policy, this concept promotes mutually beneficial collaboration among countries, often cited in relation to initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Instruments for building the new system
To construct this alternative order, China utilizes various platforms and initiatives:
Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO): At the September 2025 summit, Xi pledged $1.4 billion in loans to SCO members and sought to expand the organization's influence, positioning it as a counterweight to Western alliances.
BRI and Financial Institutions: The Belt and Road Initiative and institutions like the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) are key tools for extending China's geopolitical and economic influence, particularly across the Global South.
Global Initiatives: China has introduced its Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Security Initiative (GSI), and Global Civilization Initiative (GCI) as frameworks for cooperation across various sectors.
Technology and AI Governance: China is also actively shaping norms in emerging areas like artificial intelligence, promoting a vision of "collective security over unilateral monopoly" in AI governance.
    Context of the proposal
This proposal comes amidst complex global dynamics, including tensions with the U.S. and criticism of its "America First" policies. Analysts note that while China frames its vision as a fairer alternative, critics view it as an effort to establish a Sino-centric order that challenges existing Western-led norms and institutions.

" A catastrophic China bridge collapse in Qinghai has left 12 dead, exposing another deadly tofu-dreg project from a state-owned giant. The Jianzha Yellow River Bridge, part of the Sichuan-Qinghai Railway, crumbled during construction on August 22, 2025.

This video investigates the tragedy and the developer's shockingly indifferent response, which stated the accident would "not have a significant impact" on their performance. We uncover the potential causes—from rushed political deadlines to systemic corruption and the harsh realities of construction on the Tibetan Plateau.

This isn't an isolated incident. We also expose the dark record of the developer, China Railway Group, linking this collapse to other deadly failures, including the Novi Sad station disaster in Serbia and the Bangkok tower collapse in Thailand, revealing a disturbing pattern of negligence in their Belt and Road Initiative projects. "White Monkey" is a term used by native Chinese in the Communist State to refer to paid actors and influencers who's job it is, is to enforce the Chinese nationalist ideals of superiority.

The term has become a general one and refers to any foreigner doing these types of jobs. "White Monkeys" do not have to work in China. Many are international actors and influencers, paid to influence public opinion positively in favor or Chinese political stances, particularly in policy that is frowned upon such as internment camps in Xingjian, settlements in Tibet, it's covert seizing of Hong Kong, dispute of Taiwan, or oppression of Religious Freedom of Christians, and other religious minorities."

"In the days leading up to the grand military parade in Beijing, China’s state media has been filled with terms like "new strategic capabilities" and "system integration." When asked for details about the specifications of new equipment, the response has been a refusal to provide any information. As a result, while the government has remained silent, people on discussion platforms like Zhihu and WeChat, are sharing their interpretations of the People’s Liberation Army’s equipment using satellite images,
Today, we will set aside the official narrative and examine the circulating "leaked list" as it appears online. This list can be considered a reflection of the strategic priorities of the Chinese government. The logic behind modern governance suggests that the more a regime emphasizes a particular achievement, the more it may reflect concerns in that area. Why is there so much focus on the "carrier killer" missile? It suggests an emphasis on countering the U.S. Navy. Why the development of drones? It may indicate concerns about advanced aviation engines. Why the secrecy surrounding military equipment until the final moment? This might point to a lack of confidence in the stability of their own technology."

What’s blocked out of the Chinese celebration is the Chinese public."

The biggest news for me, from this episode, is not the headline. Rather, it is the recent report that the Feb 2025 copper mine tailings spill from a Chinese copper mine was 30 times worse/bigger than the mining company had claimed.

The report, from a company (Drizit Zambia Ltd.) hired by the mine, has been disputed by the mine company (Sino-Metals Leach Zambia Ltd.). SML terminated its contract with Drizit shortly before the report was due, apparently with the intention of keeping the report from being published.

Here is solid corroboration of Matt and Winston’s news, and it may have been their source, at least in part.

Zambia will be devastated, as half of the country relies on this river (Mwambashi River) for potable water and for agriculture.

It is quite suspicious, actually: Of anything we hear about China, especially on the news: Not as in there is any positive view of them to be held. Rather: it is the case that: They have been, for far too long, covering up their internet users behind a wall. A large wall, that prevents their citizens from connecting with the rest of the world.
In fact: It could be even worse then what we are being told on the media. After all: I know that "they" want to maintain positive and friendly relations with China. This means: They wouldn't want to provide, well: "Too much" negative media coverage, of what's going on inside of the country.
Not to mention: Both the large population of the country, as well as: Their global reach!
I forgot what I was about to say here: However. I did not feel right when I heard about the way that they approach -Wait: I forgot what I originally had in mind here, although now: I brought in mind: Their obsessive focus on education, hyper-competiveness, as well as: An inability to be laid back in life. They are always so hyper-focused on the grinding lifestyle. And: I know something about the French: Believe me! They just don't have that kind of a style to them in the way that they -are more laid back in their approach.
