    Disagree with The Shining.
Think you’re right Mark, most of Kings’ work would be more accurately categorized as “horror.” I read a lot of his books including the thousand plus tomes It and The Stand, and even those don’t truly qualify as “evil.” When I posted I wasn’t even thinking about Nicholson’s character as much as the kids in that film. The little girls on the bikes saying, “Come and play with us Danny, forever… and ever… and ever,” and Danny’s obsession with “Redrum,” the mirror image of “Murder.”

Seven seems an appropriate pick because of the seven deadly sins being played out until that awful final scene. Many of the films mentioned to this point might still be better categorized as horror rather than truly evil. Maybe we need a definition of evil thepainterdoug. The one movie that really stands out for me in the horror-bordering-on-evil genre was The Descent, released in 2005. Watched that in a dark room one day and was literally on the edge gripping my seat in terror, looked at the clock, and only 20 minutes had gone by, still had over an hour. That was a long hour…

    Does Hellraiser qualify?

I spent last few minutes trying to remember a low-budget horror/evil movie that stuck with me - it was this one (and I never watch slasher-type movies but somehow ended up watching this one)

    The Devil's Rejects

Musician-turned-filmmaker Rob Zombie has a knack for crafting scary visuals, and his 2003 gore-fest House of 1000 Corpses lived up to its sinister title. It also introduced actor Sid Haig as Captain Spaulding, the brutish, violent patriarch of the murderous Firefly family with a disturbing affinity for clown makeup. The character played only a brief role in 1000 Corpses, but Haig’s portrayal of him was so popular that he reprised the role for 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects, delivering a performance as the psychotic, clown-faced killer that earned him the “Best Actor” award at Fangoria Chainsaw Awards that year.

The Devil's Rejects is a 2005 American black comedy horror film[3] written, produced and directed by Rob Zombie. It is the second film in the Firefly film series, serving as a sequel to Zombie's 2003 film House of 1000 Corpses, and followed by its own sequel in 2019, 3 From Hell. The film is centered on the three fugitive members of the psychopathic[4] antagonist family from the previous film, acting as the film's villainous protagonists, with Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, and Zombie's wife Sheri Moon Zombie reprising their roles, and Leslie Easterbrook replacing Karen Black as the matriarch.

The Devil's Rejects was released on July 22, 2005, to minor commercial success, and mixed reviews, although it was generally considered an improvement over its predecessor.

This thread could get pretty big because there are a lot of movies that different people could classify them as evil vs scary.

I recently saw a movie in the theatre - "Weapon", depending upon who watches it, they could see both evil and scary stuff.

It was good. Well paced story that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

I don't think I ever truly got to peer into the face of evil until I was 8 years old and saw Margaret Hamilton portray Almira Gulch and the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz. Hell had no fury like her ...

For me,right now, it is seeing the things that are happening right now in the world of politics, and the people who cheer lead for it.

The murder of helpless people, caught up in deranged " leaders" of most nations, not having any care at all about humanity.

This is by far the most evil thing, I could , and have ever witnessed.

The scariest thing is not many people can comprehend it, or see it as reality.

There were two, The Hills have Eyes.

I actually met the odd freakish bald guy in the first. Michael Berryman. However, the second film, the remake , The Hills have Eyes 2 was downright evil.

The movie that sticks with me the most, perhaps due to the thinly-veiled secret-society occult reality of the deep evil that underpins it all, is Eyes Wide Shut

Which I suspect got Kubrick murdered before the studio reedited released, presumably watered-down version.

I am a huge fan of Kubrick's body of work, and wish I could see his version of that movie before his untimely passing.

The Exorcist got ranked #1 here

Also at that link the 106 'best' horror movies, all with synopses/descriptions

There I was reminded of The Wicker Man (original version - 1973)

While "Midsommar" is very good (although not nearly as accomplished as Ari Aster's debut film, "Hereditary"), its best parts are collected part and parcel from Robin Hardy's "The Wicker Man." Though its remake was widely denigrated, Hardy's original is the de facto template for all folk horror. It's a luscious, paranoid, dense, and almost mythic slice of earthy occult weirdness.

Police Sergeant Neil Howie (Edward Woodward) travels via seaplane to the remote island of Summerisle after receiving an anonymous letter asking him to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. A devout Christian, Howie is first turned off by the island's pagan symbols and rituals and symbols, which directly contradict his faith. Then, he meets Christopher Lee's Lord Summerisle, and the mystery deepens. Residents claim that the missing girl never existed, and, more than that, the people just seem off. With a terrifying and extremely memorable ending and sensational performances throughout, "The Wicker Man" isn't just folk horror — folk horror is "The Wicker Man."

Starring: Christopher Lee, Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pit

The wicker man "original" is truly a great movie, one of the best of it's kind I've ever seen.
    Certainly not an evil movie.
It does a great job of providing a believable template for the universe communicating through synchronicity an actual valid request for a human sacrifice.
If one knows what is going on in our present world one would have to agree this movie hardly rates as evil.

Since I'm here I will throw out 2004s The Grudge.
I don't watch horror movies but I was talked into going to see this one because a date I was with wanted to see it.
The visuals in this movie haunted me for years.
In the movie theatre it felt like a doorway was opened and something made an attachment to the folks viewing it.
I literally felt like this movie left a handle in my consciousness which negative astral beings could manipulate for literally years after the viewing.
    I don't know if that's evil but it's definitely f*cked up

The people who still cannot comprehend it are the fortunate. Those of us who can, who witness the carnage everyday and feel helpless to change it, who still have heart and see the political puppets for the false idols they are, who haven't been desensitized to the point of ennui and giving up, yet are forced to continue watching this clown show of horrors without the slightest idea of how to root these evil bastards out, that's the scariest thing for me.

There are so many I could name, like Human Centipede or Cannibal Holocaust, but I nominate M. Night Shyamalan's trilogy "Unbreakable" made up of:

    Ubreakable (2000)
    Split (2016) (short below)
    Glass (2019)

While Jame's McAvoy's acting of a multiple personality psychopath is nothing short of brilliant, I wonder what it did to his psyche getting in to those roles, and it's fair to assume that any film which brings the frequency/vibration of the human spirit down watching it is evil

Adrenochrome and Ritual Humiliation: The True Meaning of the Movie “The Substance”

“The Substance” is about an aging Hollywood actress who consumes a black market product that promises her a “younger, more beautiful, more perfect” version. The occult elite has been obsessed with this for centuries. Here’s a look at the symbolism in this bizarre movie.

This promotional poster shows a syringe containing the substance standing between the main protagonist’s old and new self. The starry shape on the tip of the syringe alludes to the process’ supernatural component.

And here the "sanitize" mainstream "analysis version"

With all the "problems" shoved to society... in all the splendor "cliches"...
