One of the key questions for predicting the impact of Artificial Intelligence is whether we will see a “slow takeoff” or a “fast takeoff”. In today’s video I have a look at what various forecasts say and why and what that might mean for the idea of “post scarcity” or “abundance economy”.

I always pause when billionaires say things like "universal abundance". We already have a resource distribution problem. Billionaires today work at accumulating more wealth. What makes people think, just because AI is making even more wealth for them, that all of a sudden billionaires will start distributing it?

This sounds more and more like the discussions back in the late 90s about the new internet economy that would solve everything.

What could be the most exciting isn’t just sharper images, but the efficiency gains. Less data moved, less storage consumed, that’s where real scalability begins.

I'm very excited to see the possibilities with a new image format that has such an improvement of quality vs file size. JPEG artifacts can be so ugly - if this can really improve on quality with equivalent size, that would be great. Of course, a format to store and/or render 3D objects that is significantly more efficient would be incredible for games, too! Thanks for highlighting this, as well as so many other (often overlooked) papers!

This could help make those 150gb+ games a lot lighter

Reecently, Musk claimed that Grok maximizes truthseeking (paraphrase). I found this disturbing. How does Grok define truth? When it gives an opinion, on what is that opinion based? The most popular opinion on X (the users represent a fraction of the entire global population)? Perhaps the greatest threat of AI is that people will stop developing and using critical thinking abilities and base all decisions on what they believe and do on what AI tells them. Whoever has the most powerful and popular AI can control the opinions and actions of the most people.

I do think AI is very useful as a very powerful search and sort tool, which makes the vast store of human knowledge and computational skills accessible to everyone. But we should not ask AI to give us opinions, unless we want to analyse different opions on an issue.
