A magnitude 7.4 aftershock struck near the east coast of Kamchatka earlier today, following the recent mega-earthquake.

Shaking in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky reached intensity 6 but caused no major surprises, as experts had predicted such an event.

Authorities warn that aftershocks may continue for more than two years, though their strength should gradually decrease, and the chance of another aftershock near magnitude 7.5 is now much lower.

Officials urge the public to rely only on official information and avoid panic.

Yes, it's a bot, an automated service which Avalon subscribes to. But for reasons unknown they keep sending multiple notifications of the same event, some of them days after it's happened. The mods are fully aware, but all we can really do is delete the redundant notifications.`

Yes, BGS currently provides the only (functional) RSS feed available, and believe me, I've tried and tested dozens.

RSS as a data delivery service (for reporting e.g. public safety alerts) is at end of life. It's actually well past end of life. Over the years, mobile apps have replaced it. Unfortunately, there are no modern bolt-ons for our somewhat creakingly dated forum software to support and run these apps, so old-fashioned RSS is our best and only option. Also, unfortunately, tools to configure these feeds are also out of date. When BGS reports a quake the data is preliminary in nature. It will continue to update that data with newly established times, locations, estimated depth, magnitude and so on. But it spits out a new report for these updates rather than updating the first report, hence repeated reports (threads) for the same event. As Bill said, all we can do is delete these new threads as and when they appear. It's a pain, but there's nothing we can do.
