    MARS

Why does Mars look purple, yellow and orange in ESA's stunning satellite image?

Surprising colors and features are captured in a new image of Mars' surface.

Despite being known as the Red Planet, Mars shows off its swirling yellows, oranges and browns in a new satellite photo from the European Space Agency (ESA). The Earth-toned surface also reveals an impact crater and four sneaky dust devils making their way across the region.

The Rothko-like image was taken by a high-resolution camera on ESA’s Mars Express orbiter and captures Arcadia Planitia, an area of Mars critical to research about the planet’s past and its potential to house humans in the future.

If you noticed that the image is blurry, you're discerning an effect of the wind on Mars. Gusts of air pick up and carry tiny particles of debris from the planet's surface, which creates a minor visual haze.

The wind that causes the haze is also responsible for the reddish area at the top of the photo. The red region is covered in ridges called "yardangs," which are formed when wind erodes vulnerable rock and leaves the most resistant rock still standing.

Below the red section is purplish-brown terrain, which has a high concentration of silicates and a low concentration of iron, the statement notes. The difference in colors also stems from properties of the sand, like density and size, which affect how the grains accumulate and travel across Mars.

ESA spacecraft sees a kaleidoscope of color in Mars' atmosphere | Space photo 26th Sept 2025

Mars' atmosphere has been of interest to scientists for decades, especially as humanity looks to set up outposts on the Red Planet. Recently, the European Space Agency's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter gave us a more detailed look at the thin shell of air that sits above the limb of Mars.

Mars' atmosphere is extremely thin and is composed of mostly carbon dioxide, with small amounts of nitrogen, argon and trace gases thrown in. Yet despite its thinness, it's far from static, as Mars' air can whip up dust storms that help shape short term weather.

Creating a composite photograph of the images taken by the Color and Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSIS) aboard the Trace Gas Orbiter, ESA scientists found that the dust and gas layers of Mars' atmosphere are delicate and sit close together, similar to a "mille-fueille" pastry.

These female divers spend more time underwater than any other humans

The way Korea’s Haenyeo divers push human physiology to extremes is surprising

The Haenyeo women who dive deep into the East China Sea to harvest sea urchins and shellfish spend the most time underwater of any humans ever studied, researchers report August 18 in Current Biology.

“It’s as close as you get to studying a mermaid,” says Chris McKnight, a marine mammal biologist at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

McKnight and colleagues worked with seven Haenyeo divers who live on Jeju Island in South Korea. Over 1,786 dives, the women wore devices that measured how long they stayed underwater and how deep they dove. The devices also tracked oxygen levels in the women’s brains and muscles.

The women dove repeatedly for two to 10 hours each day and spent an average of 56 percent of the time beneath the surface — more underwater time than many aquatic mammals, including beavers, polar bears and sea otters, the researchers say.

Chronicles of female divers in this part of Asia date back 3,000 years. Researchers have studied the divers in the lab, but the team wanted to monitor them in a real-life setting to put their abilities in context with other water-dwelling mammals. Studying the Haenyeo women’s physiological adaptations may shed light on how the ancestors of whales and other marine mammals successfully transitioned from a terrestrial to an aquatic environment, McKnight says.

I Met an Extraterrestrial: Ten Firsthand Face-to-Face Encounters

Mr Dennett combs the world looking for docs, photos, illustrations, etc, and does his American best to pronounce foreign names and places.

    Published 12th September 2025 (1:08:44)

A TRIP TO UNKNOWN PLACES. December 9, 1954, farmer Giovanni Aquilante of Gricignano D’Aversa, Italy went missing. Two days later, he reappeared with an incredible story to tell. He said he had encountered two small humanoids who had lifted him into the sky. He couldn’t remember much of what happened to him and came back confused and traumatized. He was also healed of a serious bone disease.

TWO BEINGS APPROACHED US. On the night of July 10, 1965, a couple was motorbiking in the forests outside of Ganserndorf, Austria when a large disc-shaped craft hovered overhead and landed in a nearby field. They approached on their bike, but the engine failed. Walking on foot, they were shocked to see two tall humanoids in uniforms observing them. Shortly later, the ETs returned to their craft and flew away.

LITTLE MEN OF GREAT LEARNING. On September 10, 1965, Antonio da Silva was in his farm fields in Pau Ferro. Brazil when two small silver discs landed nearby. Two little men about 3 feet tall emerged and approached Antonio, speaking a foreign language. Antonio was terrified but said that the men seemed very friendly. After a short meeting, the little men returned to their craft and departed the area.

THE SING-SONG ALIENS. On July 17, 1967, a group of young children were playing in the fields outside the small town of Arc-Sous-Cicon, France. One of the little girls was shocked to encounter four little men in black suits. She ran off. Soon another witness saw and heard the beings. Afterwards, strange marks were found in the field and over the next two nights, a wave of UFO sightings hit the area.

SOMETHING UNUSUAL AND EXTRAORDINARY. On the night of September 25, 1967, a young, engaged couple was driving through the hills outside of Sant Feliu de Codines, Spain when their headlights illuminated a strange figure in the road. They described it as short, fat, green, with long arms and thick legs. It walked directly in front of their vehicle, so close they almost struck it. The couple drove off in fear.

I THINK THEY TRIED TO TAKE ME. On the night of March 17, 1986, farmer Rito Melgarejo was walking home in Santa Ana, Argentina when a flying saucer hovered and then landed in front of him. He was paralyzed in fear as two small humanoids in jumpsuits emerged. They spoke a strange language and used hand signals to persuade Rito to come onboard the craft. Terrified, Rito turned and ran.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN ALIENS? One night in Fall 2008, Valerie woke up in her home in Breezewood, Pennsylvania to see a strange praying mantis reptilian humanoid standing by her bed. She was unable to move as the being told her telepathically that it wanted to borrow something from her and promised to return it. Valerie protested. Moments later, it departed, leaving Valerie with a strange mystery.

YOU WILL KNOW IN TIME. Late on the night of August 24, 2013, Shawn was alone at Lake Arcadia in Edmond, Oklahoma, when he saw a strange glowing object moving underwater in the lake. Suddenly it shot out of the water. He soon saw a huge craft hovering nearby. Moments later, three tall human-like ETs appeared, and one of them had a message for him. Shawn had missing time and woke up two hours later.

I NEVER ONCE FELT AFRAID. One night in Summer 2020, two young men saw a strange craft over Laramie, Wyoming. A few weeks later, one of the men was in his bedroom when a strange paralysis gripped him. Coming through the ceiling he saw three grays. One of them connected with him telepathically, providing a download of information, leaving the witness with more questions than answers.

THE STRANGEST EXPERIENCE I EVER HAD. On the night of November 24, 2024, Oscar stepped out of a rented home in Monterrey Nuevo Leon, Mexico to get some air. A strange man approached. Oscar was shocked to see that the man had unusually large eyes, no visible ears and extra-long fingers. When the man began to communicate telepathically, he realized that the man was probably not human.

2017 'Megaflash’ Now the Longest Lightning Bolt on Record

It sparked more than 100 ground strikes and spanned more than 500 miles (800 kilometers)

This composite image includes data from 160 high-resolution National Weather Service radars, scanning the skies at multiple elevations

A massive bolt of lightning lit up the sky from Dallas, Texas, to Kansas City, Mo., in October 2017. It’s now officially the longest single flash ever recorded.

Satellite data collected during that storm revealed that this megaflash spanned 829 kilometers (515 miles). It lasted 7.39 seconds, notes Michael Peterson. An applied physicist at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, he’s the lead author of a study describing the event. It appeared online July 31 in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society

Megaflashes are relatively rare. They happen in only about 1 in every 1,000 thunderstorms across the Americas. But any given one can pack a punch, Peterson says.

“When they can’t go up anymore, they go out, and this creates the potential for an epic flash. There are these massive, horizontally large, charged layers that can be vertically as thin as a sheet of paper. These layers are key ingredients for megaflashes.”

The record-breaking lightning megaflash (illustrated) spanned about 829 kilometers (515 miles), roughly the distance from Dallas to Kansas City, Mo.

Understanding how giant bolts of lightning form has become an active area of research, he adds.

“A single strike can potentially impact a lot of people. It’s the most impactful kind of lightning we have on Earth. It’s the kind of lightning we want to get a good handle on to keep people safe.”

Security Researchers: Unitree G1 Humanoid Robots are Secretly Sending Data to China

... and can easily be hacked

Researchers have uncovered serious security flaws with the Unitree G1 humanoid robot, a machine that is already being used in laboratories and some police departments. They discovered that G1 can be used for covert surveillance and could potentially launch a full-scale cyberattack on networks.

It sounds like the stuff of science fiction nightmares, robots that are secretly spying on you and could be controlled by remote hackers. However, the concern is real, as these types of robots are becoming increasingly common in homes, businesses, critical infrastructure and public spaces.

Particularly concerning was the fact that G1 acts as a Trojan horse, secretly and continually sending data to servers in China every five minutes, without users knowing about it. The team also showed the G1's onboard computer could be repurposed for offensive operations.

Additionally, the robot's custom encryption method to protect its internal configuration files is fundamentally flawed because it uses a simple, static key that's the same on every robot. Therefore, if a hacker were able to break the lock on one robot, they could break the locks on all of them.

AI Actress Tilly Norwood Condemned by SAG-AFTRA

Tilly ‘Is Not an Actor… It Has No Life Experience to Draw From, No Emotion’

Actors union SAG-AFTRA has issued a statement condemning Tilly Norwood, the AI “actress” who has become a contentious subject in Hollywood after her creator, Eline Van der Velden, recently claimed that multiple talent agents were interested in signing the AI creation. The acting guild believes “creativity is, and should remain, human-centered” and “is opposed to the replacement of human performers by synthetics.”

    https://www.instagram.com/p/DPOYqaWDnLe

“To be clear, ‘Tilly Norwood’ is not an actor, it’s a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers — without permission or compensation,” SAG-AFTRA wrote in a statement. “It has no life experience to draw from, no emotion and, from what we’ve seen, audiences aren’t interested in watching computer-generated content untethered from the human experience. It doesn’t solve any ‘problem’ — it creates the problem of using stolen performances to put actors out of work, jeopardizing performer livelihoods and devaluing human artistry.”

Amid growing industry backlash against Tilly Norwood, who was created by the AI production studio Particle6, creator Eline Van der Velden issued a defense by saying Tilly “is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work – a piece of art.”

“I see AI not as a replacement for people, but as a new tool, a new paintbrush,” Van der Velden added. “Just as animation, puppetry, or CGI opened fresh possibilities without taking away from live acting, AI offers another way to imagine and build stories. I’m an actor myself, and nothing – certainly not an AI character – can take away the craft or joy of human performance.”

Parallel Dimension Breakthrough Stuns Global Researchers | GRAVITAS

Is our Universe inside another Universe?

    Published 24th September 2025 (2:44)

Quote A gravitational wave event detected in 2019 might have led astronomers to discover the first wormhole in the universe. LIGO and Virgo picked up the wave that lasted less than a tenth of a second. Scientists analysed the event and deduced that it was the result of a collision between two black holes. However, six years later, they think they might have been partly wrong. While the scientists still think that a merger between two black holes triggered the waves, it probably didn't happen in our universe. Instead, what we witnessed was the reverberation from an alternate universe that reached us through a wormhole. The signal named GW190521 is still the "preferred interpretation", as per researchers of a new study, but they are not denying the wormhole theory either. The revelation was made by physicist Qi Lai of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in a preprint uploaded to arXiv.

    Question

All beginnings Horoscopes : Sumeria,Acadia,Egypt, Babylon,Greece ,India,China, etc relate to the North Hemisphere from our planet in relation to their stars position , ergo begin from Spring, winter, etc.

Therefor given the "ritualistic" positive/negative from each season and all the rest...

BUT, what if you were born in the South Hemisphere? the sky there is different, and seasons too ...

The Southern Cross is surrounded by arresting night sky sights.

Meaning: the horoscope from somebody born in the North Hemisphere don't apply to another born in the South Hemisphere (both people born at same day and hour, etc)

I'm missing something here? then please explain it to me...

Hi Vicus, good question. The seers in the Southern Hemisphere may have an answer, but I don't understand their languages. From google AI.

    --

Astrology interpretations can differ between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres due to seasonal variations. In the Northern Hemisphere, signs like Libra are associated with autumn, while in the Southern Hemisphere, they correspond to spring, affecting the characteristics attributed to each sign.

    Differences in Astrology Between Hemispheres

    Zodiac Sign Interpretations

Northern Hemisphere: Zodiac signs are associated with seasonal changes. For example, Aries represents spring, while Capricorn signifies winter.

Southern Hemisphere: The same zodiac signs are interpreted differently due to opposite seasonal experiences. For instance, Libra, typically an autumn sign in the North, represents spring in the South.

    Chart Orientation

Northern Hemisphere: Astrological charts are oriented with the Sun rising in the East and moving across the Southern sky from left to right (clockwise).

Southern Hemisphere: Charts are oriented with the Sun rising in the East and moving across the Northern sky from right to left (counter-clockwise).

    Planetary Distribution

Northern Hemisphere | Houses 1-6 | Focus on personal identity, introspective nature.

Southern Hemisphere | Houses 7-12 | Emphasis on social interactions and public life.

    Personality Traits

Northern Hemisphere Dominance: Individuals may be more private, introspective, and focused on personal development.

Southern Hemisphere Dominance: Individuals tend to be more extroverted, socially engaged, and concerned with public roles.

Understanding these differences can help individuals interpret their horoscopes more accurately based on their geographical location.

Well, I'm not the only one asking ...

When the South hemisphere question first came to my mind, I was puzzled by the fact classical calculations were not reflecting the season's inversion. In the mean time, if we opted for inversing the signs for the Southern hemisphere to make them match with the seasons, we then came with another problem: people born close to each other but in opposite hemispheres (1° North and 1° South of the equator) would end up with opposite Sun signs and this does not make sense at all. The best solution was then to keep the status quo, and not inverse anything. But, when in 1997, I read Max Duval's article (1) suggesting to inverse the signs, not on the equator, but on the ecliptic, I got hooked by the idea as it was starting to make more sense!
