"Above a certain altitude it doesn't matter whether you jump from 5,000 or 25,000 ft. About 12 seconds -- 2,316 feet -- after leaving the aircraft you'll reach terminal velocity, where air resistance equals gravitational pull. If you are in a stable belly-down position terminal velocity is ~120 mph; in a head-down position it's ~200 mph. The biggest difference is how hard it is to see the net from the higher altitude.

The most crucial part of the stunt is when he flips his position from belly-down to back-down. Done wrong or at the wrong time and it will introduce a lateral vector which will send him past the edge of the net"

If anyone wants to spend half an hour having their mind completely boggled, here's a great video about 4D Rubik's Cubes.

A fly landed on a golf ball allowing it to fall into the hole.

Quote Did a fly help this pro golfer sink an epic shot – and walk away with millions on the PGA Tour? The viral theory might seem far-fetched, but there’s a gnat-sized shot that there MIGHT be something to it! The viral putt is certainly making the rounds, in part due to the colorful commentary. The riveting clip posted by Sky Sports Golf has 3.6 million views on Instagram. It was also reshared on Reddit, where it racked up 18,000 upvotes, under the highly misleading title: “A golfer won more than $2 million thanks to a fly” The golfer in question is 34-year-old Tommy Fleetwood from the UK. He did, in fact, make the fortunate birdie during the final round of the BMW Championship, held in Maryland last week. The PGA’s 10-second rule boded well for Fleetwood. A player is allowed up to 10 seconds to see if a ball will fall into the cup, if it has come to a rest on the edge.

Yes, records are there to be broken, but my problem with highest score records in cricket is that the the quality of the opponent is not taken into consideration.

Scoring 400+ runs against Zimbabwe is not the same as Lara's 400 against England.

Limerick Teenager Wins National Title At Dublin Marathon Just Months After Running Debut

Quote There were some magnificent scenes on the streets of the capital this morning, with 22,000 participants taking over the city for the 2025 Dublin Marathon. While there was no shortage of fantastic stories on the day, perhaps the greatest one of all belongs to a teenager from Limerick.

19-year old Ava Crean would claim the Irish women's national title on the day, finishing the race in a time of 2:34:12, with a sixth-placed overall finish.

While that is an incredible achievement in itself, it was it made all the more remarkable by her lack of experience in this event.

Ava Crean would knock a whopping nine minutes off her personal best in this race, although it must be said that her marathon experience had been fairly limited up to this point.

In fact, the Limerick woman would only run her first ever marathon earlier this year. It was her first ever competitive race in any distance, finishing in 2:49.

The Dublin Marathon is only her third ever race, with Crean now already having a national title to her name.

Ava Crean did not have a background in athletics, possessing a background in camogie and karate. She also took up basketball as a teenager and was called up to represent Ireland at U17 level.

Speaking after the race, she summed up just how much she enjoyed the occasion as a whole.

" I'm 19 and I've been training for Dublin for about four months. I did my first marathon this April in Manchester and then I did Limerick a week after that...

[The support in] Templeogue was amazing. I was throwing up my hands and I was like 'I might regret that later', but I didn't.
    "

The teenager also gave a decisive answer when asked how she would celebrate what is an amazing achievement.

    Pizza, burgers, and donuts!

Cathal Dennehy wrote in the Irish Independent earlier this week that Ava Crean is now being coached by Limerick native John Kinsella, with a view towards competing in some of the world's biggest marathons over the coming years.

Considering the start she has made in the sport, the sky is the limit.

American extreme skier Jim Morrison has just skied down the Hornbein Couloir on the North Face of Everest. The only person ever to have attempted this before (Marco Siffredi, on a snowboard) died trying in 2002. His body was never found.

It's hard to overstate how extraordinarily dangerous a feat this was. National Geographic sponsored the whole thing, and will release a documentary about it. Meanwhile, their teaser trailer is below.

The direct line of the Hornbein Couloir/Japanese Couloir on the North Face of Everest. Morrison skied 3,650 vertical meters down the Hornbein Couloir and the Japanese Couloir below it, to the Rongbuk Glacier. He mentioned abominable conditions on the Hornbein, which is up to 60º steep. A rocky section below that forced him to rappel part of the way. The footage shows the true scale of the mountain and the vertiginous slopes.

Fascinating! I found the notion of 'ritual' in fights like MMA to be really interesting. (It's 100% true, of course.) That's also present in geopolitical warfare, too, as in the very concept of 'illegal weapons'. I posted this here on the WW3/Ukraine thread:
It's always seemed highly strange to me that there are such things in war as 'illegal weapons'.

Meaning, it's considered perfectly ethical and moral, and just absolutely perfectly happily fine, to kill someone in one way, but not in another. Someone might die an agonizing, drawn-out, traumatic and terrible lonely death in a trench, with a leg or an arm blown off through "legal" artillery fire. But a much quicker and more merciful death via (e.g.) a nerve toxin, or cyanide, is somehow considered "immoral".
Mashika, who fought in the Donbass military, strongly agreed. I'll not copy her post here, but it's well worth reading.

To bring this back to topic (and lighten the tone!) here's the inspired and very funny opening sequence from Johnny English Reborn, with Rowan Atkinson:

It was an astonishing day of cricket And thanks for finding a highlights package. There was all sort of criticism of the English batting, but, it wasn't that terrible actually. And of course the rule is: never judge a pitch until both sides have batted on it. Fabulous high quality bowling on both sides here. It'll be interesting to see how England fare next time of asking. If they've somehow fathomed out how best to treat the conditions and rein themselves in a little they could make a big score although the gen seems to be that either side making about 250 is par.

Default Re: All Sports All The Time

Some people don’t recognize motorsports as actual valid sports. A past summer job boss of mine was one. I disagree with that.

Two-wheeled motorsports have long been the black sheep of motorsports, probably because most people are scared of it. But everybody rides a bicycle, right? Makes no sense. As we see today, lots of people get on electric rental bicycles and ride unsafely fast. What gives?

Putting 2 vids up here, first is a classic movie from 1971 that inspired a lot of folks to go motorcycling or full out racing. Check out that vid’s comments for testimony to that. First mention of actor Steve McQueen is at about 32:45 or thereabouts. L = 1:28:39.

2nd vid is of a peculiar activity done by some folks in what is euphemistically called “the sandbox”. Back in the LiveLeak days, I used to see vids of them doing this on public highways, sometimes rolling over 😳. Difference here is, organizer of this has written a rule book for it, for how a proper safe ~sanctioned completion should be done. … I took some notes on that, because my minivan feels more tippy than my previous cars, turning as high speeds. Rollovers are brutal, and always wear your seatbelt.

Quote On any Sunday is a great movie and the early years of motorcycle racing.

Edit: in the vid, OP gets corrected on the name by a driver, it’s “shell”, not shall.
