I don't think any of us can have any idea what WWI was really like.
Indeed; many of the soldiers who couldn't cope with it and fled were then executed for cowardice.

1990 International Trans-Antarctica Expedition was a 6,021-kilometre (3,741-mile), 220-day expedition and the first-ever non-mechanized crossing of Antarctica.[1] The six-member, international team was co-led by U.S. team member, Will Steger and French team member, Dr. Jean-Louis Étienne. The other team members were Victor Boyarsky (Soviet Union), Geoff Somers (Great Britain), Qin Dahe (China) and Keizo Funatsu (Japan). The expedition was operated in partnership with the Soviet Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute through a joint venture. Primary expedition sponsors were W. L. Gore and Associates and Union d'Assurances de Paris (UAP).[1]

35 years ago the International Transantarctic Expedition had been completed - the first and probably the last crossing of Antarctica on skis and dog sleds along the longest route. There were 6 people from 6 countries - England, China, USA, USSR, France, Japan, and 42 dogs.

This photo was taken by British Terra Nova Expedition, before their entire Polar team would die on the way back from South Pole to their ship. (Colorized).

Some of their bodies, journals, and photographs were found by a search party eight months later.

2002 British Comedy Awards: Kathy Burke finally won an award that year for her role in ITV Channel broadcast Gimme Gimme Gimme. For those with sensitive ears I'd not listen to this, but, mine are on loan from an armadillo ( - that's a Moderator in-house joke) and the speech gained a lot of fuss for a mini-rush of four-letter expletives. It was though, in my estimation, very funny indeed: there's a kind of catharsis there too.

    -------

There's also the legendary 2020 77th Annual Golden Globe Award introduction from Ricky Gervais which had its very own witheringly hilarious and insightful commentary, and we're all here probably very familiar with it by now:

“If a man does not keep pace with [fall into line with] his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.” - Thoreau

Fabulous footage from Leningrad in the 1930s:

Indeed it is; I must confess that I couldn't remember what Leningrad used to be called, so I looked it up and it has since reverted to its former name of St Petersburg. Friends who have been there told me that it is a wonderful city. Looking at those faces, I wondered how the impending war had treated them.

Two gorgeous photos of Te Ata (her Wiki page here), an actress and citizen of the Chickasaw Nation who became famous in her time for telling Native American stories. She performed as a Native American representative at state dinners before President Roosevelt in the 1930s. She was born in 1895, living till she was very nearly 100 years old.

Would an old advert qualify as a document?

Absolutely, no problem. It's vintage, and a document

A little like this one from, I assume, Technocracy Inc. circa 1932. Now that the technological infrastructure is in place this is where we're headed, obviously, unless we resist

One of the earliest known photos of Rome, from 1880. I imagine it wouldn't have changed all that much over the preceding few centuries. Since then, however...

Poignant, extraordinary footage which has been colourised, from 1919

The footage from French Pilot, Jacques Trolley de Prévaux, who flew an airship/airplane from the Belgian coast to the devastated battlefields of France shows the devastation that four years wrought on the landscape. let alone the human cost:

With thanks to Chay Bowes for sharing this on X

There are many wonderful comments there too. From a historical perspective this is informative:
At 2 min 45 sec we see the ruins of the famous Cloth Hall at Ypres. There are no trenches to be seen because the ground was very muddy in Flanders and they were swallowed up quickly by mud and water. Here are before and after photos of the Cloth Hall. It is now completely rebuilt

Just a little taster from times gone by as this winter's Ashes series is set to begin in about 9 days time - the legendary David Gower striking a century (136) at Perth in 1986: my favourite ever batsman, by far. Commentary by Richie Benaud and Tony Greig

I do remember this, and that whole quite glorious series. It was the first time we got to see the ashes beamed live to the UK via satellite from Australia. I got up super early every morning to watch, again live, on I think BBC2. Loved Gower of course, a free-flowing, beautifully expressive left-hander, matched, in my opinion (though not surpassed) by Marcus Trescothick years later. My favourite, of course, was marvellous maverick Botham, who could damage (obliterate) an opponent (and quite often Australia - hehe) as much with the ball as with the bat. I fondly recall the superb ton he put up at Brisbane earlier in this series.

And it goes without saying: the summer of '81. Everyone remembers him for his giant, match-saving century at Headingley. But don't forget Edgebaston, the following test.

Australia, cruising at 105 for 4 and needing just 46 more to win, were ambushed by Botham’s brilliance. In a spell that defied logic, he claimed five wickets for just one run in 28 balls. His spell? 5 overs, 4 maidens, 1 run, 5 wickets.

From 1962, a 'Cooper' demonstrates how to make an Oak Barrel from scratch. (This could have been my own Grandfather!)

(You could probably watch this at 1.25x or even 1.5x speed - there is no talking.)
