Default Has This Man Solved The Roman Dodecahedron Mystery?

A Roman dodecahedron is a small hollow object made of bronze or stone, with a dodecahedral shape: twelve flat pentagonal faces, each having a circular hole in the middle which connects to the hollowed-out center.

About a hundred of these dodecahedra have been found from Wales to Hungary and to the east of Italy, with most found in Germany and France, dating from around 200 AD and ranging from 4 cm to 11 cm in size, they also vary in terms of textures. Most of them are made of bronze but some also seem to be made of stone.

The function or use of the dodecahedra is unknown; no mention of them has been found in contemporary accounts or pictures of the time. Speculated uses include candlestick holders (wax was found inside one example); dice; survey instruments;devices for determining the optimal sowing date for winter grain; that they were used to calibrate water pipes; and army standard bases. It has also been suggested that they may have been religious artifacts of some kind.

TheMartinhallett wanted to see what they might have been used for so he got one made with a 3D printer and, well watch to see what they can do...

Absolutely brilliant, both on the part of the original inventor(s) and the person who figured out their purpose and use. Such a huge leap of insight! How surprising and delightful to see that the devices have such a practical, pragmatic use, rather than one that is esoteric. Without the proper background in the knitting/weaving arts, such a discovery is impossible (candle holders, indeed!). How many other ancient artifacts' purpose will remain a mystery to us unless and until someone comes along who can recognize them based on their own 'hands-on' experience? It kind of reveals the problems faced by archaelologists (and the rest of us) who try to divine the purpose of artifacts based on their own limited experience.

I knit and crochet... and other things like making Cantu' lace.... I would like to know how this person "cast on" the wool and the rest of the process.... not just "casting off". Are the holes the sizes of the fingers? Why were the wool finger glovies on the inside of the ball? How did they get there? Hmmm.....

    This is very very interesting!

Of Course! A single knitting loom for gloves with different finger sizes (+as opposed to different ones for different sizes) ... My mom's mom's generation used to hand makes these little looms in all shapes and styles out of wood -- German / Russian decent Just the single finger versions though ...

The ones I have seen in my family look a little different.

    Here's some modern equivalents:

I have seen somewhat similar crafted items in my family -- I just wasn't able to quite make the connection. There was a familiarity - likely the person who figured that also was familiar with such devices -- samples posted above.

Not being familiar with knitting 8) i did wonder if any similar modern equivalent had given him pointers.Still impressive though.

Really? He came up with that and is claiming 'the mystery is solved'? I'm not saying that isn't the purpose, but just because something can be DONE with an object doesn't mean that is what the object was INTENDED for. One can boil water in an oil lamp, is that what THEY'RE for?

Perhaps, but also consider this shape is far more complex than a basic vessel (which could hold oil or water for heating); the more complex the invention, the more likely it has a specific purpose. I suppose you could use a curling iron for something other than it was designed for - but I can't think of what.

These are found more-so in the North, where people need to make gloves, they were found to be likely utilized at a time where many people had to rely on themselves or a few select others to hand make them gloves, and everyone's fingers are different sizes - which when used as a knitting loom, can cater to all those sizes with a single device as opposed to many. There are modern day inventions that are similar in design and function, and my family (a few gens back) had hand crafted finger looms -- these people lived off the land in Europe before coming to live off the land in Canada - they made everything for themselves.

It seems quite fitting, at least until something better comes along ...

    My 2 cents

So it's a gigantic knitting nancy, and it looks s bit like a daisy wheel, and also like the loom-things my grandchildren are using at the moment in the latest craze of the day! A very ingenious device, and I suspect far more useful than we are ready to give credit for, and the little glovelets may have had more uses than we can imagine.

Isn't it interesting that when, in archeology, we cannot figure out what something is for, we say it is probably used in religious ritual!?

    • Dodecahedrons Been Found All Across Ancient Rome (Nobody Knows Why):

They have 12 sides, filled with different-sized holes, with nubs on the corners. Dozens have been found, and they’re remarkably consistent. But nobody knows what they were for, and there’s no references to them in any art or literature. There’s no shortage of theories, and we’ll examine them today.

So I came up with a new theory whilst out walking the other day. On what exactly the Roman Dodecahedron was for. I thought i would compare this with some of your ideas and share my thoughts. Back outdoors next week with BIGGUN.
